getting back into disquiet junto a bit this year, me hopes, after year or fews absence. this track is made with the UDO Super Gemini. i wanted to do some fancy sequencing, and had all kinds of fancy compositional ideas to do with unringing a bell, but i ran into problems, so ended up just playing over myself a few times with the bell-like (plenty ring mod) patches I had created. the playing is really bad/i can't - but weirdly i feel this gives it, along with its simple nature, some kind of wonky heroism that does after all remind that there ain't no goin' back (unless we is torquin waaaaay back). peace peeps, all the best for 202555zzz.

the idea this junto is to render a piece in which half the recording is spaciously reverberating, while the other half spaceless. i have a big bassy egotist bragging about spaceships in a reverberating centre, with a humbling little whisper bitsquashed into the edges alongside a kind of reverbless rubberband geetar. super gemini and bitwig on debian linux.

"Record not so much an alarm as a guided awakening."

A few little bops on my chimes over three tracks from the Super Gemini (a fair whack of paddy bass, a swelling arp, some synthetic binaural piano - all the raw untreated synth) while the song of a robin slowly fades in. I'd recorded the robin the day before receiving the prompt, which feels nicely in sync with the first signs of spring around here. This is the second version I have uploaded, it now ends with a short spoken word "affirmation". 

Wishing everybody the best! I find the disquiet junto is such a nice thing to take part in, I might not always comment but I listen to every piece and end up feeling like I've been to a pleasant party full of nourishing (often wordless) conversations of many varieties. Cheers!

An offering for the first part of three, for the annual collaborative disquiet trio project. A melodic sequence derived from the word "collaboration" programmed on my super gemini, panned hard left then just a little let back into the centre again. Kind of weird awkward timing due to 14 steps - the thirteen letters and a rest - but I quite like that kind of thing. Mellow acid vibes. Three minutes of subtle tweaking. Hope someone finds it useful!

I got up early this morning and put a sequence together on the Alpha Base, to add a third piece to the disquiet duet I'd selected to work with. At one point I went through the track manually triggering the clap, forgetting my wife was still in bed asleep a few metres away. "Just a minute" I said, when she reminded me of her presence, almost too quiet to hear through my headphones. Two minutes later she was up and about, looking a little pissed off with me. I apologised, told her I was done with clicky buttons for a bit if she wanted to rest more. That was when she gave me the title:

Year's ago, soon after I first discovered puredata, I started a project to build a sequencer for my volca sample. I got quite far, but too far in some ways and not far enough in others. I could make a crazy pattern, but I never got around to sorting out a simple save/load system. It had a somewhat elaborate gui before it even had proper functionality. It was an unwieldy mess and I ended up giving up on it. Then recently I started a similar project for some new hardware I'd bought, but an error with uploading some corrupted firmware saw it away for repairs, so I dug this old project out. I started again from scratch and can see that I've made a lot of progress in terms of my understanding of the program and also the principles of design/making things, but the sequencer remains in a rudimentary state. It already has a simple save/load system built in, however, and I'm quite excited still by the prospects of it. This time around I'm producing some more generic components/abstractions, so the work will also help towards building other things. There's no crazy sequencing in this example, just a simple pattern put through a few changes. I had bigger ideas but this is all that worked in the end. It's made from a little song I sang after a day of messing around with frog samples. I think it drove me somewhat crazy, but mostly in a happy way and at least it didn't kill me.

I haven't been reading much this year, but my mum bought me a book for my birthday back in spring: Raising Hare. It's an account, by Chloe Dalton, of her time as custodian of a young hare (known as a leveret). I still haven't read it yet, but the morning I received the prompt for last week's junto I found myself sat in a doctor's waiting room with the book in my bag. I just about had time to read the first couple of paragraphs. The first line is simply, "January was arctic." But the author paints a fine picture and I was very soon immersed into the scene, feeling the cold hard ground, and watching pregnant mother hare making her heavy-bellied way across it. The funny thing is that I was having my own experience of raising a hare around the same time, just before covid hit. That's a photo of him crouched on one the vegetable beds one cold january morning in 2020. We called him Little Odin as an accident with a lawnmower had damaged one of his eyes.

So all this was on my mind when I sat down to try to improvise something. I took an arp patch I programmed a while ago on the Super Gemini, which has a kind of bouncy sweetness that reminds of hare folk, and I made a slow steady beat on the Alpha Base which was meant to evoke Mother Hare making her way across the cold hard landscape. I played around for nearly half and hour and would've liked to have spent more time editing together "the best bits", but it got late, and so I have done a live mix of the last 9 minutes and left it at that. I had a good old thunk about how to describe my artistic practise in a single sentence. "Even better than better is good," is what I went with in the end. It's not that I don't want to improve this or that, surely I do, but it isn't my aim, it isn't really what or why I practise. "Not just anything is better than nothing." That was another one. And you're not "just anything", and something about you, and what you do, is already plenty good enough. I dunno. Our good friend Lascaux the bunny rabbit got taken by a fox yesterday, that's really what I want to say. He was a really good little creature, a good friend. I made this on the volca sampler. It's funny because there were much more immediate options available, but somehow I wanted all the awkwardness of preparing the samples and waiting 10 minutes while they uploaded... Right there, somehow, an example of good being better than better. Satisfaction without complacency. Hope everybunny is well, peace peeps!

In the end with this track I chose, well I just loved the vibe, like Mr Banabila said "just pretending nothing is wrong in the world" - that really came across, and I found it to have a sweet funny buoyant vibe - and so early this morning I just played it out loud a couple of times and improvised, just recording straight into my phone, and those recordings open & close the remix. The central section is words I wrote quickly after, with the general idea of a kind of weird dad and his daughter talking, performed while listening to the tracks. Actually something weird happened and one of the tracks said the tempo was 83bpm, so I changed it to that, from 120, not realising that would slow the whole thing down, thus recorded my performance at 2/3rd speed - for a while I quite liked this ultra-slow wonky version, but in the end I felt it was better for everyone if I just put it back to its original tempo :) Anyway I really enjoyed doing this, I hope it gives some peeps pleasure to hear. It's a bit weird maybe, but weird is good. Weird is good.
