Skanking is a form of dancing practiced in the ska, ska punk, hardcore punk, reggae, jump-up (a drum and bass subgenre) and other music scenes.

The dance style originated in the 1950s or 1960s at Jamaican dance halls, where ska music was played.[1] Ska music has a prominent backbeat played by the electric guitar on beats two and four of a 4/4 bar of music. When ska became popular amongst British mods and skinheads of the 1960s, these UK youth adopted these types of dances and altered them. The dancing style was revived during the 1970s and 1980s 2 Tone era, and has been adopted by some individuals in the hardcore punk subculture.

*Pogo (dance)
Pogo is a dance performed on hard rock, metal, hardcore, ska and punk. This also occurs in the hardcore house, terrorcore and speedcore scene.

The dance consists of jumping around, in the air and against each other. The verb is pogo. Depending on the roughness of the music, people are regularly beaten and kicked. In general, pogo on ska is the least violent, this is closest to the original pogo; on very fast, rough hardcore, metal and punk, it is much more aggressive and painful, this is pips. It regularly causes injuries to the feet, toes, heels, achilles tendons and bruises due to falls and the impact of the people around the dancer. It also sometimes happens that someone mistakenly gives someone a hefty elbow punch in the face.

Pits are often confused with pogoën. Although there are similarities, it is certainly something else. There is only a pit when it is also pushed or hit (usually below the shoulders).

In the metal scene it is mainly about jumping against each other and pushing each other instead of hitting and kicking. Mowing with the arms and legs, as often happens with hardcore punk performances, is rare in metal concerts. An uninformed bystander would think that the pogo people are out to hurt each other, but this is certainly not the case. A fallen pointer is then immediately raised again.

Some see pogoing as moody, because it takes up quite a lot of space, but the purpose of pogoing is the fun.
