Evaporating

In 2013 there was another reoccurring daydream I often had that will always really stick with me - I still think about it pretty often. In the dream, I would be standing in the middle of a vast expanse with my girlfriend at the time, while she stared into my eyes with this loving, peaceful gaze. The dream always started in such a nice way, but there would always be this heart-dropping moment where she would put her hand on my cheek and I would suddenly squint my eyes and realize that she was very slowly becoming transparent. As I watched in horror, little particles of her would start floating off into the wind, and her skin would seem to ripple. As she faded more and more, her eyes always grew wide and a bright white light would start to shine out of them. The hairs on the back of my neck stand on end just thinking about it now. In the dream, I always started grasping at her, trying to hold her with me, but my hands would just phase right through her body. 

The thing is, all the while, there was always this look of transcendence and peace on her face. It gave me this very peculiar feeling - it wasn't just that she was being taken away from me, it was that she was... conceding to it. She was willingly going along with it; like she had caught a glimpse of something far beyond me and she was transcending - moving on to something much larger. 

Regardless of the horror of the situation, as the last parts of her faded, I always felt a calm start to wash over me... this interesting mix of both sad resignation and peaceful understanding. The tranquility that comes from finally accepting loss. I knew she was going on to something so much better, and I was happy for her. That was the strangest part about it - the juxtaposition of such disparate feelings. The day I wrote this song, I woke up with that feeling thick on my mind, and I knew I had to get it out.

Listen to the perfectly crafted, delicate perfection of Illuminate by WILDES.

"'Illuminate' isi a reflection on our human error” explains WILDES, continuing "It's about recognising (or illuminating) the qualities that make us human, but can also lead to our downfall. The song came from the idea that we will do anything - whether it be good or incredibly dangerous - for the people we love and the causes we believe in. 

It was only three months previous that West London’s WILDES uploaded her debut cut “Bare” which has so far caught the attention of tastemaker radio & blogging media, including Disco Naiveté who labelled her “so special.” The 19 year old, known to her friends and family as Ella Walker,  started gigging when she was 15 after being exposed to her father’s extensive guitar collection. Hydrogen Sea’s debut album ‘In Dreams’ is the next chapter in this young band’s intriguing story. On their first full length, they reconcile the electronic with the acoustic in eleven stunning pop songs.
 
Hydrogen Sea is Birsen Uçar and Pieterjan Seaux’ musical lovechild. The band formed in 2011, four years after these night owls united. When night falls and the city settles down, they start composing. Multi-instrumentalist Seaux is the creator of Hydrogen Sea’s ‘slow motion techno’ and its intoxicating melodies. He particularly has a knack for blending layered electronic elements with acoustic instruments. Uçar is the vocalist and writes the lyrics. She longs to translate stories into music while creating a cinematic atmosphere. Birsen aims to captivate her beholders and to absorb them completely.
 
The band’s debut EP ‘Court the Dark’ came out on Unday Records in 2014. The vinyl release sold out in no time and its tracks were instantly featured on several impactful Spotify playlists. The two of them also joined Selah Sue, Gabriel Rios, Oscar and the Wolf en Joan as a Policewoman on tour. They played over 100 shows in New York, Japan, UK, France, Germany, Belgium and The Netherlands. Hydrogen Sea worked hard, hired a drummer and grew into an impressive three piece live band. They wrote, explored, and developed their distinctive sound. In the shadow of their work for Hydrogen Sea, the band members collaborate with other artists, such as Selah Sue. Birsen even co-wrote the Belgian Eurovision entry.
 
In 2016, it’s time for the next chapter. ‘In Dreams’ is Hydrogen Sea’s first full length album. They recorded it at Joris Caluwaerts’ (STUFF.) studios in Antwerp and finished it in Glasgow with Tony Doogan as additional producer and mixer. The Scottish maestro is best known for his work for the likes of Mogwai, Belle & Sebastian, David Byrne and, recently, Minor Victories.
Birsen’s vocals evoke Little Dragon, Azure Ray or L’altra. The compositions are entrancing and gloomy, the bass lines are reminiscent of Massive Attack and Portishead. 
If ‘In Dreams’ were a photo, it would be taken at slow shutter speed. Hydrogen Sea’s debut is a glimpse into their nocturnal dream world, mysterious and lushly arranged. Welcome into their universe.
