having taken a taxi on a random workday, [kimetsu.] had found himself shazaming a song playing, one that he would later discover that it was unofficial Charles Webster remix & within these distinct sonics, there was a guitar, almost staring into his soul…

an 8 second soundbite, turned into a frame for a collage of sonic exhibition — a painting that Johnny Wxlf would later on, equally paint with his brush of wit, wordplay & signature cadence.

This song was one of those case where I had no idea what direction this song would go but I knew as soon as i heard the snippet on [kimetsu.]'s WhatsApp status I had to do something on it. This was actually the first song I ever did with [kimetsu.] I think, I might be wrong but i know this was either the first or second. The manner in which [kimetsu.] produces his work is so ancestral sonically and it doesn't take much to get invoked by his music. After the second listen I found myself singing along without even realising and ended up recording the following day. I always find myself trying my best to compliment [kimetsu.]’s music with a meaningful message and bonfire type chants because i understand that what he’s doing musically is an anomaly and its also extremely important. The intention behind this song from my side was honestly just invocation and I'm grateful [kimetsu.] allowed me to express myself freely on this.

BONGWA, WE MISS YOU !

i was at a friends house, whose roofing is mostly zinc & when it started raining — i pulled my phone out to record the sound of water, caressing the surface of “amazenke”.

this then became the sample which undergoes a lot of timing & sound design to become the first sound you hear within this composition.

once that had served as the foundational sound together with a bongo arrangement that’s in the thirds, i played a harp progression which i went on to layer with a double bass, a sub bass & a hit foley, before introducing an arpeggiated guitar to tie the production altogether.

upon arrangement & having exported the composition, i sent it to LUNGĒLWA as a congratulatory for their Narowbi debut & they sent the song that you’re to immerse yourself in, in a matter of hours — almost a flex of their immeasurable genius.

When I wrote this song it was me being my most vulnerable and about not recognizing someone l used to be with. It almost felt like betrayal and the only way I could process it was just letting the song cry for me. As reference to Jay Z and how he has a classic joint called a song cry I had to let the song embody that type of pain.

Abandonment is something I often deal with but still haven't yet fully mastered the aftermath that come with it. Although this is not a love song it's love singing through yearning for a deeper understanding into one's experience of heartbreak. It can be from family a friend, a lover but you interpret it how you must [kimetsu.] sent it to me as a celebratory gift after my NarowBi debut and I sent it in within 2-3 hours back because it spoke to me and exactly what I was feeling during that time, an ode to vulnerability.
