This is a preview of the upcoming episode of CoHearence (http://niche-canada.org/category/media/cohearence/) produced in collaboration with UnderCurrents: Journal of Critical Environmental Studies (http://www.yorku.ca/currents). The episode brings queer ecologies scholars and artists Peter Hobbs, Gordon Brent Ingram, and Cate Sandilands into conversation around the recently released Volume 19 of UnderCurrents, "From Queer/Nature to Queer Ecologies: Celebrating 20 Years of Scholarship and Creativity." That Volume is a celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the publication of UnderCurrents Volume 6, "Queer/Nature." Both UnderCurrents and CoHearence are based in the Faculty of Environmental Studies at York University in Toronto, Ontario. CoHearence is sponsored by NiCHE, the Network in Canadian History and Environment, and Nature's Past.

CoHearence Episode 7 Teaser

In 1994, the York University-based, student-run journal UnderCurrents released what might have been the first publication wholly devoted to the intersections of sexuality and nature. It was titled, simply, “Queer/Nature.” Twenty years later, the Faculty of Environmental Studies at York is still home to a range of scholars, artists, and activists whose work continues to explore these themes. 

This episode of CoHearence was produced in collaboration with the Editorial Collective of UnderCurrents to celebrate the release of Vol. 19 of the journal. Titled, “From Queer/Nature to Queer Ecologies: Celebrating 20 Years of Scholarship and Creativity,” the volume includes both exciting new work and traces the evolution of scholarship at the intersections of gender, sexuality, and nature. 

The podcast documents a roundtable discussion among some of the original contributors to “Queer/Nature” and others working in the broad terrain of queer ecologies: Cate Sandilands, Gordon Brent Ingram, and Peter Hobbs. In the podcast, these prominent scholars/artists/activists reflect on their own commitment to and understanding of queer ecologies in conversation with the episode’s guest co-producer, Darren J. Patrick.
