The rewind button brings the tape back several times and, with it, The Buttshakers. From the tape to the studio, the décor changes to an America lost in its own reverie, the America that Ciara Thompson left in 2008 to settle in Lyon, France. Untethered from the idealistic veil of her childhood, this America, her America, now appears in its crudest reality: disfigured by violence and racism, the streets transformed into a make-shift shelter for those without a home.
Black Lives Matter, Not In My Name, #metoo and other red flags light up the soundboard without stopping this desperate and breakneck race to darkness.
Yet, when everything darkens, there is always an afterglow that cannot be extinguished, that final ember capable of rekindling on its own a brazier of hope. This is soul music.
Arcadia, “the land of delights,” a perfect world as described by the poet Virgil. This land where all is beauty and perfection becomes, for The Buttshakers, the place to rally, to unite, a moment of resilience. Not a place of retreat, an escape from reality, but a goal towards which to reach.
On their previous album, Sweet Rewards, The Buttshakers offered a soft light on the romantic side of soul. With Arcadia, they explore its conscious face. The one which, in the heyday of the 70's, shone thanks to the albums of Gil Scott-Heron, Marvin Gaye or Curtis Mayfield.
Creation influenced by the political and social events of our times. The form that meets the content in a music that is visceral and raw yet full of finesse and delicacy.
If over-worked productions tend to kill first intentions, The Buttshakers knew, with a skillful movement of the hips, to avoid diluting their intentions in layers of production, always preferring to be as close as possible to the natural source of their music to keep the fire burning. Here we find the sound of a group who has found a solid balance between soul music, its roots and its offspring : blues, rhythm and blues, funk.
A group led by the rugged feline presence of Ciara Thompson who’s vocal prowess, here put on perfect display, finds itself flawlessly balanced between a generous horn section and a devilish groove. A feat, yet once Ms. Thompson takes a step back, the void is quickly picked up, leaving room for the guitar and organ to reverberate, the trombone appropriating the last bars for a funk to the bone solo. With Arcadia, the listener is ushered through the kalediscope, letting the groove drift into an instrumental trans where the robotic beat takes control and sinks into a voudou-psychedelic mystique from which we can only be drawn out by the intervention of the brass section. The dust of a six-string western incantation embedded in the groove like a muffled groan, an explosion that is always on the edge, and which the vocals masterfully contain and amplify. 
Leaving behind the compositional automatisms that could have hampered a band that has been playing together for over a decade, Arcadia is their most successful album so far by the sheer audacity of their compositions. With each member of the group participating in the writing process, the richness of each idea put forward illuminates and guides the listener.
Dark and yet still luminous, Arcadia remains true to the spirit of soul : hope out of struggle, light out of fear; even when the cracks expose the darkest side of humanity, soul music has always given us the assurance that out of this chaos, a better day will come. A philosophy on which they built their discography and their stage presence; founding principles that the group has always been faithful to: to awaken the listener, to ignite the fire, to bring the dance.

LA ÑAPA is an introduction to the world of Colombian slang and daily life. La ñapa is the little extra you get from the street vendor when buying juice. It’s also the little extra rice or sugar people get when, short of money, they want the tendero (grocer) to give them a little more than what they can pay for, or a good on credit. It’s a reference to the recent events in Colombian and particularly Cali when the post covid crisis and subsequent uprising had the city plunge into poverty and hustle. Nidia is the narrator who observes how the tendero is going crazy over people asking him for La ñapa, with humor and derision.

LA ÑAPA est une introduction à l’argot colombien. C’est le petit extra que l’on peut obtenir lorsqu’on achète un jus de fruit dans la rue. C’est aussi le petit supplement de riz ou de sucre que les gens demandent à leur tendero (épicier) lorsqu’ils n’ont pas assez pour payer, quand la ñapa n’est pas un credit qu’on sollicite. On pense aux événements que la Colombie, et Cali en particulier, ont connu en 2021, lorsque le covid et les emeutes ont fait replonger la ville dans la précarité et la débrouille. Nidia est la narratrice qui observe, avec une pointe d’humour, le tendero assailli par ces solicitations

Complètement de l’Ouest, les oreilles braquées sur l’Atlantique Noire, Julien Ger- vaix et Damien Tesson sont tous deux des enfants du collectif et de l’improvisation, terrains de jeux pour ces multi-instrumentistes complets.
Le premier met d’abord ses talents d’arrangeur-saxophoniste au service du collec- tif nantais Soulshine et de nombreuses formations – tour à tour funk ou rhythm’n blues – où chalouper fait la loi. C’est le cas notamment du groupe afrobeat Walko, au sein duquel Julien Gervaix a l’honneur de partager la scène et le studio pendant plusieurs années avec Kiala Nzavotunga, guitariste émérite de Fela Kuti et d’Egypt 80. Pendant ce temps-là, le second fait ses classes de dubmaster-guitariste-arrangeur à l’école reggae roots option digital du collectif vendéen Shi Fu Mi Temple. Une initiation qui amène Damien Tesson à intégrer, entre autres, le groupe nantais BIBA (Bingy Band) puis à collaborer avec Jideh High Elements, incontournable sur la scène dub internationale, Roberto Sanchez et l’équipe de son Lone Ark Studio, mais aussi Sana Bob, célèbre chanteur de reggae burkinabè. Et puis, la vie étant bien faite, les chemins de Julien Gervaix et Damien Tesson finissent par se croiser au sein du com- bo jazz-funk Playtime, avant de se retrouver en Vendée quelques années plus tard. Avec un tropisme évident pour les grooves afro-latins, les couleurs tropicales, les bidouilles électroniques et les furieux déhanchés, les deux musiciens créent alors Ireke comme on lève un verre de rhum bien arrangé. À la nôtre, à la vôtre ! Comme guidé par l’esprit de la plante, Ireke trinque pour célébrer l’immense richesse de ces rythmes à danser, véritables générateurs de vie, de lien et d’énergie.

À la manière de Legba, orisha yoruba des carrefours et de la croisée des chemins, Ireke s’épanouit à l’entre-monde. Conscient de la lignée d’orfèvres qui les ont précédés, Ireke connaît ses classiques et s’inspire humblement, pour Tropikadelic, du génie musical de Pat Thomas, Orchestre Poly-rythmo, King Tubby,Tony Allen, Fela

Kuti, Maître Gazonga, Ernesto Djédjé ou encore des Vikings de la Guadeloupe. Cuiv- res extatiques, claviers 70’s, guitares élastiques, basses rondes et percussions-monde : de cet héritage sonique, Ireke fait une fusion unique, augmentée par l’apport auda- cieux de sa science dub, et quelques touches électroniques patiemment débusquées dosées en studio – que le duo considère comme un instrument à part entière.

Enfin, pour donner de la voix à ses compositions, sur Tropikadelic, Ireke fait appel à une armée de sérieux enjailleurs dont chacun.e des membres est venu.e avec ses textes. Ainsi retrouve-t-on aux côtés d’Ireke le griot du groove Pat Kalla (“Femme qui Danse”, “Love Is Jokin”), le reggaeman franco-laotien Amatah Keo (“Man Bo Diak”), les vendéen. ne.s Agnès Hélène (“Petit à Petit”,“Oh Ma Chérie”) et Charly Sanga (“Bas Les Masques”, “Oh Ma Chérie”), le lion zion burkinabè Sana Bob (“Métissage”) ainsi que le soulman nantais Jy Cooly (“Kinkeliba”).

Pour le duo, la musique s’envisage avant tout comme une pratique collective, une libération active, une approche cadencée du lâcher-prise, une source de joie com- municative… En bref, groove is the weapon ! Et Ireke sait s’en servir.

“HELLO VERA” is a story of a girl called Vera and her journey to find true love. 

Vera’s story is told through a record player, a stack of vinyl, a sampler and a bunch of different keyboard instruments, and is created by the danish producer and beatmaker, SUM’ONE.

Since the beginning of his musical career and from his first push on the MPC2000, he has been inspired by artists like MOBY, RJD2, DJ SHADOW, PORTISHEAD and DAFT PUNK. SUM’ONE was especially attracted to the electronic and sample-based instrumental genre, where the instruments are the main ingredient when creating the musical mood. Until now he has never had the chance to put everything else aside and focus one hundred percent on this.

So far, his musical career has been as one of the founders and band member of DAFUNIKS and OTIS STACKS where the music was a perfect mix of hip hop, funk and soul. These past adventures have given SUM’ONE the opportunity to travel around the world and achieving goals, that he never imagined was possible. These past adventures have also led to unimaginable collaborations with childhood idols like AFRIKA BABY BAM of THE JUNGLE BROTHERS, AKIL THE MC & MARC 7 of JURASSIC 5 and the late GIFT OF GAB of BLACKALICIOUS. 

“Despite of the joy of working with a lot of talented people, I have chosen to go on this adventure by myself. Musically and personally, it has been a developing journey where I have learned to work in new and inspiring ways. That’s why I chose to make “HELLO VERA” as an instrumental EP.” – SUM’ONE

SUM’ONES long-lasting love for sampling and vintage synths has always played a major role in his music and this will probably never change. So, while the sound is inspired from the same vintage universe, the tempo has been raised and the dusty breakbeats have met the signature kick of the early disco era. 
Where the music’s capability to explain a feeling or tell a story is the primary. The type of genre and style has become secondary and more fluid. 
It’s all about that certain feeling at the time the music was created instead of the result of an already planned goal.

We talked a lot about love in our previous album, "Lanmou Lanmou", but before we're capable of sincere love for others or for nature, we have to find love for ourselves, and try to heal the wounds of the past. The first track, "Something's Going On", tackles the themes of letting go, healing and self love. The musical contrast between the rocky, synthetic chorus in English and the rest of the track, which is more Afrobeat, organic and sung in Creole, illustrates the separation between the harshness of the contemporary world and the inner gentleness that can bring a certain peace

Otis Stacks is a collaboration between Michael Munch aka JustMike, a producer from Denmark, and Elias Wallace a singer songwriter from Pasadena, California.    The music is analog synth based soul with undertones of the hiphop culture that both grew up in.
Otis Stacks sound was conceived out of JustMike’s growing collection of vintage analog synths. As he collected old analog synthesizers, he experimented with new sounds and created a sparse soulful sound. During a tour through the French Alps with Elias and the Danish band Dafuniks, Elias and JustMike recorded a song that later would became “Fashion Drunk”, the first single off of their EP “The Break up.” After hearing the sound that they both came up with they formed Otis Stacks and wrote and recorded songs in Nice, Montpellier, and Paris, France while on tour.
Otis Stacks use of analog synth sounds and Rhodes piano give it a distinct sparse sound. It is soulful and hearkening back to an older more pure time in music before over processing and auto tune dominated the approach. Elias adds thoughtful, emotional lyrics and strong melodies to the mix. It all works together to create meaningful songs that explore loss, pain, and longing in the sometimes vacuous and hedonistic nature of the music world.

Otis Stacks est né d’une collaboration entre le producteur Danois Michael Munch aka Just Mike, et Elias Wallace, auteur compositeur chanteur de Pasadena, en Californie.
C’est lors d’une tournée dans les Alpes françaises avec leur autre projet commun : Dafuniks, que les deux compères écrivent leur première chanson, «Fashion Drunk» premier extrait et single de cet EP à paraître. Ce premier essai, les conforte dans leur aventure commune et leur collaboration unique prend forme. Le projet OTIS STACKS a désormais pris vie et les amène à écrire et composer lorsqu’ils se retrouvent en France pour la tournée des Dafuniks. Entre Nice, Montpellier, et Paris l’Ep se construit et se peaufine à distance entre les Etats Unis et le Danemark.
Leur musique analogique se nourrit d’une base synthétique avec de larges nuances empruntées à la culture hip-hop dans laquelle tous deux ont grandi. Le tissu musical construit par Just Mike est brodé d’une collection de sons de synthétiseurs analo- giques vintage qu’il collectionne depuis plus d’une décennie.
Avec eux il expérimente de nouveaux sons, construit, déconstruit, jusqu’à produire un son soul clairsemé, épuré, et novateur. Une dentelle musicale qui permet ensuite à la voix puissante et sensuelle d’Elias de se poser au fil de mélodies accrocheuses et aux textes profonds abordant les notions de perte, de douleur, de nostalgie, mais aussi un regard abrupt sur la nature humaine parfois vide de sens.
C’est en 2016 qu’ils rejoignent le label hexagonal Underdog Records (Dafuniks, Flox, Fanga, Tribeqa, John Milk, D-Bangerz, Sweatshop...) ainsi que le producteur de spectacles CARTEL ( Chinese Man, Deluxe) séduit par la qualité de leur live session enregistrée chez Findspire.
Otis Stacks un projet soul, aux sonorités vintage, et aux arrangements contemporains, porté par une écriture émotionnelle et réfléchie qui ne vous laissera pas indifférent.

Driven by a vicious and visceral soul, The Buttshakers are known for their fierce and fiery music: turntables steam from the heat of their records, dance floors buckle under the blistering pressure of their infectious grooves, a group with a burning Midas’ touch. 
Yet after nearly a decade of touring and recording, it was with a different musical vision that they approached Sweet Rewards, their first collaboration with Underdog Records. 
Accustomed to the raw, primitive sounds of 60s garage rock and the crude sexuality of pre-Motown soul music, The Buttshakers have created a reputation as a “must see” live band, perfectly aligning loud rock riffs and lustful desires. A sound they could have continued to dig into again and again. Instead, they decided to take another route. A creative shift, a return to a style of soul music that no longer has to rely on pure energy alone; a sound that concentrates on the quality of writing, composition and interpretation rather than pure virility. 
Exceeding the limitations imposed by their tight yet powerful six person lineup (vocals-guitar-drums-bass-trombone-saxophone baritone), they opened up this studio session to fully accommodate their ideas and concretize their musical ambitions, emphasizing the subtle structures of the overall production: a larger horn section creates a richer, scintillating sonority; a touch of slide-guitar opens their creative universe to the open spaces of the far West; the organ vacillates between psychedelic drapery and heartfelt gospel tones; all of this supported by the wicked groove of a percussionist driving the beat on. 
Their sultry and soulful frontwoman, Ciara Thompson, is here for the first time supported by backing vocalist. An occasion for her to indulge in a few call-and-response chorales, a reverence to a gospel background instilled in her from her native St Louis (Missouri), a still vibrant heritage from the city that cradled jazz, blues, country and folk music. This new liberty gives her room to explore various emotional venues, exposing a voice capable of fitting perfecting within the intimacy of a stripped down acoustic ballad as well as a nervous funky break. 
Ideal for a sound that never lets down yet remains intuitive to the gradual rise of emotion each song demands. With each new listening, Sweet Rewards reveals something new to the listener: another dimension, a hidden layer. An album and a group that proves that they have more than one trick up their sleeves.

La chanson, écrite en lingala (une des langues du Congo/Brazzaville), est initialement un hommage aux femmes congolaises victimes des dernières guerres civiles qui ont ravagé le pays. C'est l'appel de détresse d'une femme, qui porte la vie, sème ses fruits, et qui pourtant, reçoit en retour de l'Amour quelle donne, une place aux premiers rangs de l'horreur dans les conflits armés. Leurs bourreaux ont oublié qu'elles pourraient être leurs soeurs, leurs filles, leurs amies... Après la guerre, les survivantes jouent un rôle crucial dans la reconstruction de la société. Certaines élèvent avec un amour inconditionnel leurs enfants nés du viol. Ce sont aussi les premières à faire preuve d'une grande tolérance, à être les gardiennes de la paix, dans un esprit de pardon, indispensable pour que l'Histoire ne se répète pas. C'est cette puissance de transformation, cette source intarissable d'Amour que ces femmes ont pu trouver en elles qui a inspiré cette chanson.
