Sometimes you have an idea that doesn't quite have a place until a later point. Things crystallise when you find something inspiring and it brings a fresh perspective to that idea, and makes it better. The bones of this piece had been knocking around my head for a little while and that moment came when I watched a rough cut of One Million Dubliners. I thought that if I fleshed it out, it would sit nicely across the scene of Shane MacThomáis regaling American tourists with witty stories of characters from Irish history buried in Glasnevin, as he hopped from one grave to the next on a damp winter morning. The piece is wistful, moves with a delicate bounce and carries a sense of time passing, which I thought reflected the scene somehow. Thankfully, Ray, Aoife and editor Emer Reynolds all agreed and that's exactly where it went.

A Lack Of Income

The brief for this cue was to have something that underpins the hard work, dedication and warmth of the people who work in and run Glasnevin Cemetery-A balance of nostalgia, pride, love and grief. It started as a simple piano piece and then Ken Rice brought it entirely to life with his beautiful playing. The effect in the second half of the cue is my attempt to create the sound of the solo violin on Neil Young's "Expecting to Fly".

This was the very first piece I sat down and wrote for One Million Dubliners. It was directly inspired by the film without knowing exactly where it would go. Emer and Aoife placed it under the scene of Luke Kelly's birthday celebration, as John Sheahan talks about life and death, and recites his beautiful poem "Signatures" about the mark that people leave behind after they die.
