LAY - BRRR DAY BARN BURNER SET

The fourth installment of Digital Rootz showcases a homegrown DJ/producer with one of the longest active running careers in the Kansas City ranks, Tony Markham! Although “Analog Rootz” would better describe this OG turntablist, it’s hard to pass up an opportunity to hear someone with two decades of experience play some tunes.

As any old school vet would want it, he recorded this mix live without any edits. We were lucky enough to pick Tony’s brain on a few questions when he came to record the mix. We kept it short so the music would do the talking.

UF: How and when did you get started DJing?

Tony: “I started DJing in 1995 after i bought a set of turntables from Ray Velasqez. After i got decks i went and bought couple of crates at an old school record store next to where the Point stands now. The store my friend Dizzy ran called B-Bop Records in mid-town.”

UF: What DJs have and still do influence your DJ career?

Tony: “My influences when i began were Ray Valasqez, Tim Johnston, Halo Varga, Justin Long, Angel Alanis, Paul Anthony and Traxx. They all still influence my career along with long-time friends Trigga Happy Cyko ( Aka THC ), Sid Wilson #0 from Slipknot, and the SPC crew.”

UF: Considering you’re a veteran and have seen the ups and downs of the dance scene; how have you seen electronic music evolve over the years, and which direction do you think it's heading?

Tony: “The EDM scene has a 10 year cycle that peaks once every 10 years. I see it peaking now and is about to Pop. After this happens, it will go back to a more underground culture, and something new will be born.”

UF: Last question, give the listeners a brief description of your mix…

Tony: “This mix is a callab of all my influences including a Club/Underground edge to keep anyone that loves to dance movin.”
