Next up on the mighty Heist Recordings is a classy collaboration EP from NYC heads @JKriv, of Razor-N-Tape fame, and @petermatson, front man of the excellent Underground System who have drafted in some of NYC's most talented players to bring it to life. As you would expect from this fully loaded team of artists and producers the 'Bigtime' EP is outrageously hot. 

To celebrate the EP landing Peter Matson jumped behind the decks to record a real barnstormer of a mix for us combining his own tracks with tracks from the new EP and some of his favourite tracks from his recent DJ sets. Raucous Brooklyn dance legends Underground System made a triumphant return with their debut on Razor-N-Tape - Into The Fire. Showcasing the group’s dynamic global sound, they swing from the Afrobeat-meets-indie-disco vibe of the title track, to the raucous and instant earworm bounce of He Said, She Said, and the smolderingly sultry Desnuda.

Longtime fans of the band will know they are true club heads. Similar to their boisterous live shows, Underground System DJ sets have ignited floors from Brooklyn to Mexico City, pushing their global groove into 4x4 territories.

'This mix represents a slice of Underground System's musical life and recent releases/influences. Part compilation, part club mix, we bob and weave through barn burning italo disco, slinky acid bass driven grooves, and include our signature afro/latin meets post-punk influences along the way. Label co-founder JKriv delivers a trio of all-original cuts on his Something Else EP, bringing together a cast of featured hometown Brooklyn talent to center dynamic songwriting with club-ready vibes. On the A1 title track, a playful funk-laden bassline lays the foundation for an explosive hook and soaring vocal performance from Brandon Markell Holmes. Dynamic live instrumentation takes center stage in the soulful Try Again, which builds to an anthemic peak as guests Nic Hanson and Phenomenal Handclap Band intone the song’s hopeful message.

On the flip, the laid-back boogie groover Shoulda Been Me slow-burns with heavy bass, percussive rhythms, and serene synth-work to support the layered vocal textures by Toribio (of Conclave). Detroit legend Alton Miller takes the tune in a classic soulful deep house direction, with a bouncing rhodes pattern revolving over solid drums, and showcasing Toribio’s vocal prowess in a new light.

Norway's Prins Thomas is a giant of an artist whose influence looms large over the whole of the Scandi-scene.  The space-disco king has a sound that draws on electro, krautrock, psychedelia and prog in melodically majestic ways and has given rise to a wealth of fully realised studio albums and classy dance floor singles, mostly on Smalltown Supersound. His latest record, 2019's Ambitions, is one of his best: it found him strip things back and reinvent himself once more over the course of plenty of gently absorbing grooves and mindful moods.

As a DJ he is just as well equipped to take you on real dance floor odysseys built on ever present grooves, but coloured with melodies from the celestial realms. And that is the case on his 90 minute podcast for us, which journeys through frosty northern tundras as well as twinkling night skies with equal elan. The ups and downs along the way are subtle ones, but together they create something perfectly escapist and somehow very suited to this time of year.

So on the first weekend that the lockdown and social distancing measures were announced here in Scotland, I went downstairs to my basement studio as I often do for a wee music session. 

That night however I was charged with a weird energy and my thoughts were packed with what was going on. My emotions were also running high still from an amazing first few months of 2020 starting with Mareh festival in Brasil followed by a visit to Rio and Sao Paulo for more high tempo and full power emotional gigs. On coming back to Scotland I played my first night at the new venue in my city, Kings. It was very special. Then it was straight back to Rio for my first ever Carnaval  followed by a weekender in the USA -  NYC, Miami and finishing up at the excellent Okeechobee festival playing b2b with my disco brother JKriv and the Gouranga clan. Phew!
 
Then next thing I knew…I was in my basement studio. Everything was about the virus and what was to come, all future plans on ice. My income had gone from healthy to zilch. And there was whisky to be drunk and a mix to be made. So that’s the backstory. I poured my heart and soul into it that night. It felt right. It felt good. It featured moments still fresh in my mind from all those parties that kicked off 2020. I hope those people can feel and remember the moments the same way I can. I put them in for you and for us to share and remember being together as one. As such I wanted it to be a global mix. That is, one that featured music from all around the world: Asia, South America, USA, Canada, Africa, Europe, Australia, China, India, New Zealand, Turkey, Israel and more! Many of it is from friends. People I am fortunate enough to meet on my travels, spend time with and call friends in this wonderful world of ours.
 
I wanted it to be a mix that did something to help others. I know so many musicians, DJs and other people who are going to be in such deep trouble because their livelihoods just stopped. And because so many of us didn’t realize how much we music people have become dependent on live gigs and performing in a digitally driven music world. And this is before we even start to think about people who are way worse off than us music people…. Vulnerable people, refugees, homeless people in every city who need our help urgently. I also knew from the start who I did this mix for. I did it for Gouranga because they have supported what I do and my vibe for some time now. It’s nice to have someone who gets it and supports you. They are good people and I knew they would share my values and direction with the mix.
 
So here it is. And here we are now. Stuck in this crazy situation and in this fast changing world. I hope you enjoy the vibes and my music. I hope you are safe and being kind to others. And most of all if you dig it I hope you will give something if you can afford it to help others in worse situations. People really do need your help. And we must be bigger than this, or the bastards will win. Below are the links to our chosen list of charities. Or just choose some charity you prefer. But please be kind to them. This recording was the last 3 hours of music on Sunday night -- Underground System's Peter Matson & Domenica Fossati (on Live Flute)for the first hour then @razor-n-tape's head-honcho Jkriv (with Domenica still shredding on flute) taking us home with a little b2b at the end. 

Rumor has it this three-some has some upcoming collaborations and releases between, so we figured we'd keep this set all as one and relive the vibes in all its glory.
