The Space Between Us is honoured to announce its next offering - Corner Taken Quickly - the debut EP from Naarm-based artist Al Dente / @al-den-te. The intriguing producer, who comprises ⅓ of the acclaimed Neurocrank / @neurocrankk family and ½ of Nebula / @neb-u-la, shares what is quite possibly the most positive thing to come out of Melbourne’s extended lockdowns - the Corner Taken Quickly EP. Propelled first and foremost by a love of soccer, Al Dente’s EP title pays homage to one of the most iconic moments in Liverpool’s history – fans will know. Spurred on by other influential factors, from film to TV shows – and of course, much musical digging during months spent at home, the EP is sonically metamorphosed into this warpy, wonky 5-tracker which doesn’t take itself too seriously. With a collaboration with fellow Naarm-based producer @explicitjoy and a harmoniously energetic remix from none other than Montreal’s queen of turbo, Maara / @maara, the EP is primed for the most quirky and adventurous of dance floors –  and is as bendy as Trent Alexander Arnold takes his corners.

Setting the overarching atmosphere, Little Jerry is a dark cauldron of bubbling, fizzing electronics. Foreboding pads swell and deflate amongst skittish percussion to cook up the most off-kilter opener – almost as off-kilter as the Seinfeld episode for which is this track’s namesake – if you know, you know. The Translator turns up the temperature – an assembly of oddball percussive elements which skip alongside the warpy bassline and eerie echoes of Scarlett Johansson’s iconic vocal. Tension builds amidst sinister pads before making space for high hats and the kick – a wobbly intro which steadies itself all the way to the dance floor. 

Stepping wholeheartedly into emphatic club territory, Seven maintains the air of spookiness embodied throughout the release with its snarling bassline which rolls against familiar warps and vocal splinters. Next, Al Dente collaborates with Explicit Joy on Sonic Dialogue; a bouncy, stripped back, continuation of quirky, club-oriented moods.   

Last but not least, Maara takes the power output dial on The Translator and turns it up to the maximum; generating her Transductor Mix – an electrifying reimagination of the original. An explosive end to Al Dente’s EP – in true Maara style.

The EP opens with two tracks from scene mainstay Cyan85. “If I could” haunts the listener with its vocoder and eerie pads and bassline whereas “Leave” is a classic groovy workout.

On the flipside, Leite Dos Santos presents two machine-funk infused jams, with the jazzy melodies in “Before The Train” and oriental mood in “Night Warriors” closing the EP.

The fourth EP in the Duality Trax series comes from Steffan Todorović and Joonas Arro under their Abdul Raeva alias. It’s a sonic match-made-in-heaven, with both contributing artists and label head sharing an admiration for bouncy, fun and deep club music that dangles its legs on the border of emotionality without taking itself too seriously. 

Ear-wriggling acid lines and psychedelic atmospherics balance a gritty and driving drum rhythm across a kaleidoscopic six minutes for lead track 'Atlas Coporation', before ‘Death Race’ blends techy dub with Abdul Raeva’s signature proggy sauce, best played as the sun begins to rise again. 

Staying true to the concepts of gender and sonic duality, the remix comes from Australian DJ and Pure Space-founder Andy Garvey who turns in a breakbeat-laden, broken acid-techno rendition of the A2, before we come to a meditative close with the tropical, downtempo sounds of ‘Guardian of the Vault’.

Exit Planet Earth started as a series of records, selected and compiled by ralph lawson, featuring exclusive tracks from the emerging wave of exciting electronic music that emanated across the planet as we approached 2020. Inspired by sounds that captured the imagination the records seemed to hit a nerve as the world turned upside down and faced increasingly unstable times. 

It was always the intention that the individual tracks would form a body of work that acted as a snap shot of how people were feeling worldwide as a steady stream of super villains seized power at the very worst time possible. During hard times people turn to music to express emotions as well as escape reality but we don’t know where that creativity process will lead until we turn on the machines - the results can be unexpected. 

Over a collection of 25 tracks Exit Planet Earth delves into the reaction of electronic music artists across the planet during the craziest times of the 21st century. We find rules being broken, boundaries being crossed and genres being defied resulting in some moments of magic. Only by losing what we took for granted did we realise what we had in the first place. Only by leaving the planet can we gaze back on our pale blue dot and appreciate our fragile existence…
