I'm really excited to be able to host this 3 hour live mix, from Hard Wax and Macro's Finn Johannsen, recorded at Cosies in Bristol.

Under the Disco Ball Exclusively Hosts 'Finn Johannsen' - Live At Cosies

I first heard Carl play at his residency for Collective Minds and thought he was fantastic, and after having him play a 6 hour, record for record, b2b set for us at Dialogue with Jane Fitz, (which was easily one of the best moments musically I have ever experienced), I couldn't wait to have him put together a mix for me.

A special hour of music here as Carl treats us to some fresh sounds after receiving a nice little record delivery the day before recording this! A little bit different to what you may have heard Carl play up until now, as this mix includes a few more wonky electro infused numbers than usual. Carl throws in some nice acid and the odd mellower track in-between. I found it really refreshing. (Carl specifically asked me to say sorry to you all about the naughty little skip in the middle). I think you will love it, enjoy!

Richard Gregory is a DJ who I have really enjoyed when I have been lucky enough to hear him play, hopefully, this will be more often, now that he has a residency for a new Stoke Newington based party, called ‘holding hands’. He is one of the lesser known names on the underground scene and I wanted to be able to share what I have experienced with you. 

Richard will be playing alongside some of the cream of London’s house and techno musical talent with the likes of BLM, Ethyl, Flori, Leif, Ben Boe, Greg Grantham, Carl_H, Ashton Holland, Danny Newman and Nick P Warren. I was lucky enough to have had the pleasure of meeting Mark Rhein on a trip to Hamburg, for Jane Fitz and Jade Seatle’s ‘Pudel Moves’ with Benjamin Brunn at the Golden Pudel. Mark very kindly said that he would record some of his records for Under the Disco Ball. 

Mark Rhein, originally from Lüneburg moved to the South of Hamburg to study and this is where a few years ago, Wake up! Records was created. Mark is now based in Berlin where he works for booking agency, Option Music.

Mark recorded this podcast in his living room with 2 turntables and 1 mixer on the floor, as you can see by the photo that he took for us. Expect leftfield, ambient and down tempo vibes.

Under the Disco Ball is pleased to welcome Matt Pond! 

"DJ. Presenter of the DeepSystems radio show. 1 third of BitterSuite production team. Owner of DeepSystems Music record label

Matt Pond is a man who understands that the gulf in hierarchy between DJs at the top and bottom of the food chain is as vast as it’s ever been. Despite or maybe because of this, he is one of those guys who has picked substance over style: modest and demure in his demeanour, you only have to scratch the surface to realise he’s a seasoned professional who’s been in the business for decades. He’s a humble individual who sees past the glittery awards and their accompanying hubris and has stayed loyal to his loyal stalwarts of underground culture.

In the late 90s Matt moved south to Brighton and became resident at Fluid Groove. It was here that he had the opportunity to DJ with such artists as Joshua, Charles Webster, DJ Rasoul, DIY, Jef-K and Atjazz to name a few. It was also around this time that he set up Audio Lounge, a small specialist record store. Moving into the 2000s, Matt turned to production, teaming up with Dom Thompson and Jon Gray to become part of BitterSuite, during which DJing took a back seat. After a few years of learning the ropes, BitterSuite then started collaborating with fellow West Country house heads BRS and The Rurals, and a string of remixes then followed on the Peng label (as well as one off remixes for Friends & Families and Flat and Round)

Later on Matt would record for such labels as Batti Batti, Swedish Brandy and Finale. It was also around this time that Matt became manager of the infamous Hedonizm Records, one of Brighton's longest running dance music specialists.

In 2006 Matt set up DeepSystems, a two weekly radio show on the now defunct FearOfMusicRadio.com. In conjunction with the radio show, a string of underground parties followed where Matt worked with legends such as Boo Williams, Glenn Underground, Anthony Nicholson, Trinidadian Deep, Alton Miller and DJ Deep; booking out small private venues as opposed to clubs, with superior sound and music quality. Many more parties have followed over the years, as well as many DJ performances at nights such as Kit, Peg, Day Moves, NYC Downlow & Genosys (Glastonbury), Freerotation (Wales), Field Maneuvers (Oxford), Arthouse (Manchester), Bonilla (Manchester) and Spotlight (Birmingham). He’s also been broadening his horizons by crossing borders and playing in Malta, Russia, Sweden, Ireland, USA, as well as all over the UK."

This is Matt's last podcast of 2016 before he starts his new regular radio show. Expect summery vibes and warm vocals. The mix features tracks from Ron Trent, Blaze, and Allstar Motomusic and it will definitely bring smiles to your faces on this dreary Monday.

Under the Disco Ball Podcast 020 - Miles Atmospheric

September's edition brings you a top mix from 'Timma' ahead of his slot at Field Maneuvers Festival in Oxfordshire tomorrow.

This collection of oldies (all UK and US labels) that Tim has put together really conveys the diversity of the era in which the music was released. He brings a mixture of acid, Chicago and deep house and there's even some hip house thrown in there too. This is a great example of some the fantastic transatlantic collaborations of the time and a special celebratory mix dedicated to 1988-1990.

Under the Disco Ball Podcast 021 - Timma

The next podcast in the series is from Nasty Boy, an Italian DJ who was particularly well known on the house scene in the late 90's.

In September of 2008 he decided to take a leap into production and over the years has released tracks on labels such as On The Prowl, Anma Records, Klapmaster, Underground Ltd, Fventi 12Records, Shift Ltd, Batti Batti and most recently two EP's with Finnish Label Sahko, and two remixes for the British Band No - Man. 

Here he gives us an hour warm housey vibes, perfect tunes to take us into the first days of autumn.

It's coming up to nearly four years since we had Ben Boe, along with Nick Lawson in the saddle at one of our Dialogue parties, they took us on a 8 hour ride with some fantastic music that we won't forget in a long time, it was a special night!

Ben is back sharing music with us again, (thank you Ben!!) but this time with a special podcast to take us into November. Deep, dark and dirty, this mix is really fitting as a little TREAT for the ears on All Hallows Eve. Here's what Ben had to say about this mix...

"I wanted to record a mix that reflects where my head is at right now. It's similar to some of the music I played at Field Maneuvres this year, although I only played one of the records there that made it into this mix. It's ended coming out a bit dark which suits the time of year I guess! It's definitely on a moody tip, maybe one for a hazy afters. "Ben has spent the last two decades immersed within the UK electronic music scene and has managed to forge a musical identify of his own from the early days of seeking out breakbeat tapes as a teenager to garnishing influence from the US house sounds of Hard Times and Back to Basics at the turn of the millennium. Following a move to London, Ben established boe recordings in 2007 and wasted no time in attracting fresh, top-drawer signings. Records from the likes of KiNK, Leif, Anaxander and John Shima have gained support from top-tier jocks including Fred P, Raresh, Mike Huckaby, and François K, with the label garnering a reputation as a stronghold of underground talent; an uncompromising and carefully curated imprint with its own discernible aesthetic. With deep, dancefloor-primed cuts that acknowledge the past while embracing the present, it boasts a coherent and impressive back catalogue.

Ben’s second label For Those That Knoe was minted in 2013, and serves as an outlet for the fruits of his digging-based labour: giving a new lease of life for rare, unreleased and almost forgotten tracks from the unsung heroes of vintage house and techno, including Derek Carr and Casey Tucker. It’s a reissue label that gets the job done properly no rip-off controversies here. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the label’s been a hit with some of the scene’s most respected DJs: Panorama Bar residents Steffi and Virginia are big fans."

Happy weekend people! 

A bit of a delay with this one due to tech issues, but here it is! 

After an amazing weekend and feeling motivated by all the great music he heard at Field Maneuvers back in sunny September (exactly two months ago this weekend), Bloom's Aaron Blyth recorded this little gem for us! 

A few words from Aaron...

"When I pull mixes together I tend to pick out a few records and then wing it on the first mix however, I really thought about how I wanted this one to go together. Feeling massively inspired from a weekend at Field Manuevers this year this was really good timing to lay something down.

This has really caught my current mood for what I am into listening to at the moment, starting deep at a nice tempo but then quickly delving a bit darker spanning across to touch on Electro and throw fully into Techno.

I had a kind of euphoric feeling when mixing it and at the very end I even decided to mix in what must have been one of Ferry Corstens first ever productions, 'Moonman - Galaxia" 

As most people will know, I am a records only man and so my trusty 1200 on the right and my not so trusty 1210 on the left, which is due a service were powering this mix, along with the Mastersounds Radius 4, an absolute dream to mix on! Also, I added the complete original record with Galaxia on the end. A bit of a wobble mix but keeps it real :)I can't escape the fact I used to like trance haha!  I hope you enjoy! x"

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! 

Taking you into the first weekend of 2019 is a new mix from Gazebo's Chris Scott.

A few words from Chris about his track selection for this podcast... 

"The idea for this mix came a few months back after I rediscovered Underworld's 'Riverrun' series, which was a free digital-only release they did back in 2006. The first track on my mix comes from the final part of that release which has the excellent title 'I'm A Big Sister, And I'm A Girl, And I'm a Princess And This Is My Horse. This track seemed like a good starting point for a trippy and propulsive mix, so that is what I have tried to do.

I sometimes like to do mixes off the cuff, but this time round I spent a fair bit of time selecting the tracks and considering how to fit it together, then I recorded in my flat using a pair of 1210s and a CDJ."
