I am grateful every day for the color that music brings to my life. It provides an escape but also a soundtrack to the ever-changing moments in our lives. No matter your background, values or beliefs, music brings us together under one roof. Who knows where this journey will take us, but here is a passage from this passing moment in my life, made up almost entirely of unreleased music made over the past 30 days. I think my inspiration is clear to see, but hopefully my own voice still carries through the sound I make.

I like how each culture influences the way people express themselves but how, actually, we are all just trying to experience the same type of emotions. I guess I wanted to reflect that; the process of making friends from faraway places and going from being surprised and a bit out of your depth, to finding the things we all have in common. “I wanted adventures. I wanted to go up the Nung river to the heart of darkness in Cambodia. I wanted to ride out into a desert on camelback, sand and dunes in every direction, eat whole roasted lamb with my fingers. I wanted to kick snow off my boots in a Mafiya nightclub in Russia. I wanted to play with automatic weapons in Phnom Penh, recapture the past in a small oyster village in France, step into a seedy neon-lit pulqueria in rural Mexico. I wanted to run roadblocks in the middle of the night, blowing past angry militia with a handful of hurled Marlboro packs, experience fear, excitement, wonder. "This mix is a highly personal one for me - not least of all because I submitted it the night before my wedding and captured the artwork shortly afterwards on my honeymoon. Giegling has been a tremendously important influence in my music exploration over the past several years, informing my tastes on ambient, breaks, dub and techno alike. In this mix I tried to hone in on that ‘giegling vibe’ without playing any tunes off the label’s catalogue specifically. I had a lot of fun compiling this from some of my favorite records sitting around my studio, tracks that friends have shared with me, as well as an intro that I put together just for this session. Thank you Mohi and our community for inviting me to share my music with you, and I hope you enjoy listening to it, as much as I enjoyed recording it."

This Is Not...A Mix - 006 [Contemplo by RAHL]

This is an excerpt from an essay by the brilliant Modernist poet, Mallarme.

“Certainly, whenever I sit at concerts, amid the obscurity and ecstasy of sound, I always perceive the nascent form of some one of those poems which have their origin and dwelling in human life -- a poem more understandable because unheard, because the composer, in his desire to portray its majestic lines, was not even tempted to explain everything. [...] 

When I say, ‘a flower!’ then from that forgetfulness to which my voice consigns all floral form, something different from the usual calyces arises, something all music, essence, and softness: the flower which is absent from all bouquets.”

I have been reflecting on the idea that music, like poetry, traces the outlines, the nestled branches, shadows, and light which contour what we seek to express: the pure idea, which is not the bouquet, but the flower which is missing from it. The relationship between reality and the imagined world is one in which we as artists, create a passage -- in Mallarme’s words, to “divorce the object from the direct and palpable, and so conjure up its essence in all purity [...]”

The limitation of spoken language springs us to use it differently, similarly how the imperfection of a color palette or having access to only a fraction of possible sounds  pushes us to alternate modes, to exist outside of these bounds. I feel there is something healing about this process of imagining, attempting to concertize the unsayable.

"Happiness doesn’t exist without sadness. Darkness is followed by light. Would parties still be parties if we partied every day and never worked anymore? No life without death. Ups solely exist because there are downs as well. I’m a positive person by nature and always try to take the positive out of a negative situation. For this mix, I tried to capture the tides of life in the waves of sound. The opening track -familiar to most of you- resembles birth, after which the musical journey of life starts. It flows through various levels of the emotional spectrum; from high to low and going back and forth multiple times. 

While navigating through the waves, the mix ultimately leads to a grand finale with two final tracks where a sense of euphoria, acceptance, ecstasy, reflection and appreciation all come together. The picture that comes with this mix is from my first ever solo trip; four weeks through both the Southern and Northern islands of New Zealand. This picture was taken right at the very start if what would be one of the most beautiful days of my life; a nine hour hike through breathtaking landscapes. Alternating ascends with descends, and experiencing four seasons in one day, this closing track captures that day perfectly."
