Super Mario 64 'Dire Dire Docks' String Quartet

After the new release of Super Mario 3D World, I felt inspired to do an arrangement of the main theme. I thought it'd fit pretty nicely with samples from Yoshi's Island, since both game OSTs are heavily jazz-influenced, and overall I'm happy with the result.

Super Mario Bros. 2 (Jack G Quick Remix) [GO DOWNLOAD THE EXTENDED VERSION!]

It's the favorite track of many.. compressed into 8 channels with mainly FF6 samples. More than 36 hours was spent on this, trying to find the most important things of the original song and squeezing it all in there, keeping track of every little thing, pushing the limits of the SNES as far as it can go. Made in Super Mario World using AddMusicK.

Many thanks to @potato-tan for helping me out a lot with this one, constantly giving me feedback and pushing me so far to make this perfect.

I always felt that many of the SMG arrangements out there felt lacking, so that's why I did this. I wanted to prove that the SPC700 can sound just as amazing as modern technology with the right execution, and I feel like it worked out just fine.

Sample sources: Final Fantasy VI, Megaman 7,  General MIDI, Gradius III, Parodius, Hourai Gakuen no Bouken.

In total there's 14 quite big samples in the song, with 112ms of delay. For the SNES, this is pretty much pushing the limits, because the ARAM is about as full as it can be for the song.

I was practicing a bit with writing under themes, so I asked a friend to propose a theme to me. This one was for a "lighthearted coffee shop". Enjoy!

Me and a few others were asked to compose some songs for a collaboration hack over at the Super Mario World ROM hacking community, and this is what I came up with. I also recommend checking out the rest of the soundtrack, as everyone else has done an excellent job with the soundtrack! Like most people our age, we grew up playing videogames. The countless hours glued to the TV playing our favorite games inspired us to put together a short tribute to these fantastic devices. Which ever side you were on, nobody can deny the amazing games offered on both platforms. There is incredible value in what these composers did with the limited hardware and this is our way of showing appreciation.

We updated their sounds a little bit and in a way, prove that good songs transcend genres.
