The winter solstice marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year. In the northern hemisphere it happens in December. Ancient Europe german and scandinavian pagans celebrated “Yule” in this period and many of its traditions were adopted in the Christmas celebrations such as the Christmas tree. Many pagan gods such as “Sol Invictus” (Syrian, later Roman god) are associated to the winter solstice.

The melody in this musical piece is inspired by the Christmas Carol “Carol of the bells” based on a traditional Ukrainian folk chant “Shchedryk”.

Solstice

The holly and the ivy are two symbols that were always interwined with the solstice rituals and later with the Christmas celebrations. The holly was sacred to druids and associated with the god Saturn by the Romans. The ivy is a symbol of eternity.

It is also assumed that the symbolysm in this Carol relates to ancient fertility mythology: the male is therefore associated to the holly and the good, whilst the female is associated to the ivy and the evil.

This piece is a rearrangement for classical guitar, harp and electronic sounds of the song "In the bleak Midwinter" written by Gustav Holst. The melody is melancholic and evokes a cold northern landscape – it expresses the calm and quiescence of wintertime.

This electronic piece of music shall evoke a cold, but beautiful landscape. A landscape that shows us the wonders of nature – lets us be in awe before them. The Aurora Borealis and Australis paint the sky in the long winter nights in the extreme north and south of the earth. They are formed by a collision between atmosphere and solar particles.

This song is also known as the “Huron Carol” and is probably the oldest Canadian Christmas song. It was written around 1642 by Jean de Brèbeuf, who lend the melody from a traditional french song “Une Yeune Pucelle”. The lyrics were written in the native language of the Huron people and the song was called “Jesous Ahatonhia”. Its first line says “twas in the moon of wintertime”.

We wrote this music as an alternative soundtrack to a scene of the movie “2001: A Space Odissey” (Stanley Kubrick). In this scene the main character leaves his spaceship to do some repairation works on it. He flies slowly through the void, held by nothing.
