In my teens I read all of Carlos Castaneda's books. Carlos penned his philosophies in what is likely a fictitious story of fictitious characters where he teaches shamanism. Whether or not Don Juan was a real person and nagual to Carlos doesn't matter to me, he still shared some amazing truths on existence through his experience and imagination.

When reading the books I listened to one album. Good Gods Urge by Porno for Pyros. It's a very interesting nugget on association and musical memory for me as that album still to this day brings me back to the world of Don Juan whenever I listen to it.

It might not bring you to the land of Don Juan and his buddies but it's an epic album anyways!

The Wheel of Time

Inspired by Jean-Luc Godard’s film Alphaville, this sonic and textual work unfolds sixty years later. Amaz 30, a normative intelligence now embedded in our daily lives, engages in dialogue with X13, a secret agent from an unnamed, cold country. A man without origin, without flag, carrying a memory that insists.

Through their exchange, a tension emerges between calculation and tenderness, between optimization and forgetting, between constant light and lost shimmer. The text explores the invisible architectures of the present, the disabled thresholds of tenderness, and the murmurs that resist erasure.

Deprogramming The Jewel

Dan sez: This is one I've been playing for 25 years, originally adapted from Tom Rush's version but since augmented by several other versions. It is, according to certain ethnomusicologists, by far the most widely collected folksong in the English language. It is #84 among the esteemed ballads collected by Mr. Child, and was mentioned in an early 1666 entry of the famous Pepys diary; as it spread to the US it was apparently popular throughout the east, not just in the South with where the most famous versions are associated. It's easy to see why the song has endured and remained popular in its many versions; it's a timeless tale of love and tragedy and remorse, incredibly romantic. I've always gotten a kick out of the idea that Sweet William was probably dying of plague, rather than unrequited love, and that Barb'ry caught it when she visited him and died the next day... but that's not nearly as romantic.

I previously put up a rougher fingerpicked version I recorded in 2004, which you can hear at https://soundcloud.com/lonesomedstringband/barbry-allen; in re-tackling the song we wanted to do something different with it, different from both my earlier version and from a lot of the intensely detailed  sounds G&B have been cranking out. So we ended up with a pretty basic, hopefully timeless, folk-rock sound, with a couple different acoustic guitar voicings over mandolin and ukulele, some electric guitar breaks,  and a fantastic rhythm section provided by Dr. Burns that grounds it solidly with just a hint of swampiness to it.  Jeff also mixed it beautifully, transitioning the backing elements gently to provide a subtle variety of settings within a consistent whole, and also cleaning up my many errors throughout along the way.
