The SAMOSA FUNK boys are back in town and boy oh boy - have they got a packed trunk of funk to unload at the loading bays here at BLT Towers. 

March 2021 brings us the latest instalment of the Samosa Funk Juggernaut, featuring the deadly duo of De Gama and Les Inferno. 
These guys just wow you into submission every time. Our advice? Don’t resist it. Embrace it. Let the Samosa Funk flow through your veins and arteries. 

Starting things off is De Gama, who had a set packed with new and upcoming releases on these gloriously crafted labels. Amazing music from an amazingly talented guy, all packaged in the De Gama silk kimono. De Gama has naturally funky bones, bones that would make the sound of a Xylophone if you tapped them. 

For the second hour we welcome Les Inferno, who delivered what we thought was arguably his best performance of this residency - that's a tough bar to meet, never mind to raise. The Les Inferno Encyclopaedia of Musical Knowledge should be on display in a glass case - you can look at it but never touch it. Les Inferno has to preach from it, and you just have to listen.

Derek Kaye married his schoolboy passions of music and electronics in 1973 when he constructed his first disco sound system, aged just 13. Prior to this, with DJ equipment something of a rarity in those days, he created a custom setup that bypassed the need for a mixer by rewiring his turntables in such a way that he could flip the sound from one deck to another, and installed a switch that would dip the music so a microphone from a portable cassette player could be used to announce the song on rotation. His work soon grew in sophistication and a new console was built, with his schoolmate, Greg Wilson, buying Derek’s old rig, thus beginning his own well-documented DJ career.

Over the past 40 years, Derek has continued to DJ in and around the North West, both in residencies and guest spots, and his passion for music and electronics are still just as strong. His enviable studio has gone through the transitions of working with notator (the forerunner to logic) on the studio essential Atari 1040 ste with a collection of keyboards and Akai samplers, to just about “working out of the box” as is the case with a lot of studios now.

Today, a lifetime of experience is being teased out of the connoisseur by lifelong friend and A&R curator Greg Wilson, beginning with the double header of 'Nobody' and 'Music Up': both reworks have caused dance floor rapture for Greg over recent months and, as festival season fast approaches, they are now being shared amongst the wider DJ community for the very first time (Derek and Greg have also recently joined forces to remix Bryan Ferry’s ‘Don’t Stop The Dance’).

'Music Up' is an overhaul of the 1979 Vanguard 12” by the Players Association, Kaye's version injecting further verve into the original with a new bassline, percussion, strings and arrangement. Personally requested by NYC stalwart Danny Krivit when Greg Wilson dropped it during his recent gig at The Date in London, 'Music Up' is a surefire festival favourite, for house and disco heads alike, that’s set to fly this summer.

Players Association - Turn The Music Up  -  Derek Kaye Rework

Few artists strike the balance between the classic and contemporary quite as effortlessly as The Vision. Striving to produce honest and meaningful records, their acclaimed single ‘Mountains’ came as the follow up to incredible breakout hit ‘Heaven’, and the duo once again demonstrated their flawless production abilities. Now, The Vision return with three new remixes of this dancefloor gem. Up first, disco royalty Joey Negro delivers his Live And Direct Mix, weaving in melodies and grooves with exquisite percussion and keys that give the record an authentic disco sound. Up next, veteran producer Paul Woolford delivers his remix of the track. An artist whose output ranges from mind-bending techno to high-energy house hits, his sophisticated take on ‘Mountains’ features his signature bold piano riffs and atmospheric builds, destined for meaningful dancefloor moments. Finally, Toronto duo The Patchouli Brothers step up to remix. Known for their exquisite vinyl edits and a favourite of in-the-know selectors, the funk-laden, high energy mix makes a perfect closing to another blissful release from The Vision camp. As anticipation builds for their forthcoming LP, this charming package provides another exciting preview of things to come.
