The Merkins is a rock band from Milwaukee, WI.  Active in the early 1980s, the band featured members of power pop band The Wigs and rock band Arroyo.  When The Wigs played a reunion show in WI in 2009, they also performed some songs as The Merkins.

ABOUT Cake (RMX) - originating in 2014 when #Raplords were first building the "Uni-Fi Mixtape Vol.1" the production for this song was provided by one of our inhouse producers Da Ricanstrukta and had a much more trap-lord feel.  With no set direction, both Dana Coppa and SPEAK wrote 24 bar verses.  At that time Uni-Fi was working with GREAT, recently meeting and talking about possible future ventures, this song was on the table and we reached out to Great to write and lay a hook as we learned he was a singer as well as rapper and producer.... the song got to be too long, we slashed the verses to make it a decent length, but the emcees were not feeling how the lyrics mashed with the beat.  There it sat until a month or two ago when we were compiling ideas for "VII Days".  Dana had suggested we make a remix and have Vincent VanGREAT be part of the re-construction.  We stripped the beat and started from scratch building the new instruments and drums to existing vocals..... The somewhat somber verses get time to breathe during Vincent's "Kanye College Dropout" sounding hook switch up.  Enjoy the Remix and stay tuned for more music!!!

Hailing from Milwaukee, WI, the multi-faceted Vincent VanGREAT is one of the lead producers of rap super-crew SAFSCrew. With music being deeply rooted through Vincent VanGREAT’s bloodline he was already getting groomed through church by participating in choir, and playing the drums for the church band at age 14.  Artists and self made producers such as Timbaland and Pharrell Williams inspired GREAT because they would make music that could cross over several genres, and reached a very braud audience. ABOUT "Conscious Genocide" -  The original production comes from the song "The Baddest Man Alive" created by Black Keys and RZA.  Back in 14' when "Uni-Fi Mixtape Vol. 1" was being built, this production piece caught the ear of Dima aka White Russian at which point he was excited to find out that the instrumental to the song was available as he thought it would be a nice addition to the mixtape.  After presenting it to the team, SPEAK was immediately struck with inspiration and wrote what you hear today.  The song was complete but it was not fitting into the context of the other songs, so it got bumped off the Mixtape.  SPEAK Easy has always been a story teller and conscious rapper, here he wanted to tell a story and step into the shoes of a big time hustler reminiscing someone with Jay-Zs status and talk about how their business is taking peoples lives. In this song, SPEAK delves into the consciousness of a hustler whose escape from poverty comes at an extreme price. Listen, as he navigates to the thoughts of being free financially, but could cost him freedom and trauma of wreaking havoc on the village that raised him.  Enjoy and stay tuned for more music!!!

Rusty Ps: Established in Milwaukee, WI in 1995, the Rusty Ps (formerly “Rusty Pelicans”) have played an instrumental role in the Midwest underground music scene. For nearly 2 decades, the Ps have been touring nationally and internationally bringing their unique style of hip hop to the world. The Rusty Ps have had many releases, local, national and international, over their almost 20 year career. In previous releases they have featured Imani of the Pharcyde and Slug of Atmosphere. They have released independently and released under Grand Central Records (UK). At home they have been recognized numerous times by the Wisconsin Area Music Industry as the state’s premier hip hop group. Revered by fans and critics alike, the Rusty Ps continue to create and produce their own brand of original hip hop music

Mike Regal: Born and raised in Milwaukee WI, 25 yr old Mike Regal gears up with an arsenal of releases for 2015.  Aside from 2 prior beat tapes, and production credits on songs that have already been on some of the major blogs, Regal has never released anything to the public but is already having huge draws when playing out his unreleased material at venues all over the city.  This may be due to his stellar 2014 "Miltown Beatdown" performance as he dominated the championship slaying 31 other producers in Milwaukee's 10th annual premiere producer battle.
Mike's passion for production began in high school and quickly accelerated when two of his teachers, who ran a studio, heard something that he was working on at the time.  Immediately they took interest to the young producer and took him under their wing, helping him get and learn software and develop what would become his signature sample based and hype, drum heavy style.  Regal would at first make production for friends and write for himself on the side, but as the streets consumed  many of the artists he would produce for he decide to branch out and started to record himself at the age of 19.

Battle-scarred, Midwestern rapper Dana Coppafeel has been an outspoken voice in the regions underground hip-hop scene since the mid-90s. Few Milwaukee hip-hop artists have a resume as long or impressive as Coppas, whose most recent notables include collaborating with Action Bronson on the successful single Hot Shots Part Deux and opening for Cypress Hill at Summerfest - the Worlds Largest Music Festival - with KingHellBastard (KHB).
As a former member of award-winning indie groups like the Rusty Ps, Intel Agents and KHB, hes opened for or performed with artists including Common, Wu-Tang, Q-Tip, Souls of Mischief, Akrobatik, RA The Rugged Man, Eyedea and Abilities, Raashan Ahmad, Count Bass D and All Natural, and made memorable albums that boast sales as far away as Germany and Japan.

ABOUT "Cali Soul" -  Produced in collaboration with pay dirt production Da Ricanstrukta took the Tupac California sample and laced it with his own flavor, #Raplords wanted to  get a West Coast feature on the mixtape at the time and the only solid connect we had out there was Blake Banks @blakebanksxx .  Originally Black Lung from Rockford, he has moved to the LA to pursue his rap career.  As Blake was writing and recording the song his friend and popular rapper Bishop Lamont @bishoplamont (at one point signed to Dr. Dre's Aftermath Records) heard the track and wanted to get on it, that's how this collaboration came about.  The features were not received in time to make the Mixtape and we definitely did not want to let this track collect dust, so here it is!

Uni-Fi Records as a label has always steered it's artists towards building collaborative tracks, and since the release of their "Mixtape Vol.1" in 2014 this has not changed. After the release of their last project there were several songs that did not make the cut but were still favored by the team (#raplords consisting of Dana Coppafeel & SPEAK Easy the emcees, and Mammyth DJ/Engineer/Producer). The MINI project "VII Days", is here to provide 7 free songs, one a day for a whole week. Presenting singles that didn't make prior projects, and other collaborative tracks that were created to recognize the individuals and groups we (#raplords) work with, and intend to release music with for 2015 and beyond. 

Each song has it's own story and it's own artists, so catch each one as they drop, listen and read about how the songs came about. Learn something about the artists, and we hope that you like what you hear enough to add each to your own collection, and share with your peers.
The future shows big promise for the label as it teams up with a handful of hometown, Milwaukee based artists to release their works in collaboration with Uni-Fi Records through 2015. The team recognized and hand selected these groups or individuals based on similar paths of operating and creating good hip hop music, or in some cases these relationships formed naturally from being in the same city for so damn long.

Milwaukee, WI - Rusty Pelicans has been a name synonymous with Hip-Hop in the Midwest for a long, long time. As pioneers of the DIY independent rap scene, “The P’s” as they’ve become affectionately known, have been around to witness all the ups and downs that hip-hop has undergone and survived it all to tell the tale.

After many personnel changes over the years, the original line-up of emcees (Phantom Channel, Count Classic, Dana Coppafeel and MC Oneself) have reunited to celebrate their 20 year Anniversary with a brand new album. To kick things off, the quartet will be releasing the first single, “One Moment” on Tuesday, November 24, 2015.

Produced by Mammyth, “One Moment” is the perfect marriage of true-school lyricism and contemporary sound. Listeners will be encapsulated in the lush production and stream of consciousness flow when the group lays out the long and short of their journey through hip-hop.

One Moment

Die-hard Milwaukee hip-hop group KingHellBastard continues to deliver raucous boom bap and potent lyricism on their latest release from Uni.Fi Records. The album comes off a stellar 2009 which saw KHB receive constant airplay on 88.9 WYMS and 91.7 WMSE and led to the group winning Artist Of The Year and Video Of The Year in the Radio Milwaukee Awards, a trend which continues in 2010 with 88.9 already adding the first single "I Believe" to their rotation. Building upon years of riotous performances and international collaborations, KHB brings out the heavy artillery on the 8-song record with appearances from Sadat X of the legendary Brand Nubian, Def Jux affiliate Akroabatik, Raashan Ahmad from Crown City Rockers, Stricklin from hip-hop supergroup EMC, and blazing cuts from The White Shadow of Norway. Starting off with a veritable explosion of sonic energy and a thunderous verse from Akrobatik on the song "Clubber Lang", MCs Dana Coppafeel, Shemp, and DNA waste no time heralding their return with steely-eyed conviction over a heart-stopping beat from producer Reason, accented by the nimble bass playing of LMNTlyst and deft scratching of resident DJ OneL. Keeping the intensity high, the record hits a celebratory note with the second track "I Believe" featuring an exuberant verse from crowd rocker Raashan Ahmad over joyous horn blasts and breakneck drums from Reason and a blistering scratch coda from White Shadow. Side A closes with two slices of serious funk, the booming bass of the White Shadow produced "It's The Crew Again" featuring the unmistakable voice of Sadat X, and the certified G-Funk banger "North Coast" featuring a hilarious verse from fellow Milwaukee native Stricklin. With Side A dedicated to showcasing some of the collaborative efforts KHB have generated from constant touring, Side B allows the group to stand on it's own considerable talents with three songs from in-house Uni-Fi producer, The White Russian. First is the kaleidoscopic "PhD" where the MCs weave in and out of the verses as the beat builds up in layers of shifting soundscapes. Next comes the fist-pumping ode to hip-hop's golden age "A Tribe Called Bastard", where each MC references quotables from the past over a beat that could have been at home on a tape deck in 1988 and recalls classics like "Scenario" and "The Choice Is Yours". Lastly comes the heartfelt hometown anthem "Ma'waukee", an introspective look at the blue-collar roots and hardscrabble character of the Midwest set to a soulful and exultant beat that has already proven to be a show-stopper during live performances.

Hailing from Milwaukee, WI, the multi-faceted Vincent VanGREAT is one of the lead producers of rap super-crew SAFSCrew. With music being deeply rooted through Vincent VanGREAT’s bloodline he was already getting groomed through church by participating in choir, and playing the drums for the church band at age 14.  Artists and self made producers such as Timbaland and Pharrell Williams inspired GREAT because they would make music that could cross over several genres, and reached a very baud audience.  

His freshman LP titled "UnGREATful" is here and is fully self produced, will feature several of the rising crop of artists out of Brew City.

Dana Coppafeel and company star in the “That’s Me” single.  The track is about young kings grinding, dream chasing, and living up the day to day.  This type of song is outside the box for Dana’s style, but he slayed, laying a canvas of lyrics over a base heavy banger produced by Mike Regal who also features on the track.  Coppa pays homage to the grind “When people think about overnight success stories they don’t consider the years of dedication to get to that success” said Dana in an interview about the song. Kene Holliday and Andy Griffith are back at it again. Or should I say Vincent Van Great and Dana Coppa. Releasing ‘Matlock’ featuring Yo-Dot, Friday 7/20, the second single off their new project “A Tape Called Fresh” is sure to make some stank faces. This duo from Milwaukee, WI are no gumshoes when it comes to the scene and they are banging out a sick instrumental with this one. Vincent Van Great checks this beat off the production checklist of one that he’s wanted to do since he was a kid.  Matlock has got more lines than a courtroom stenographer.  It’ll take some detective skills to decipher all these bars but that bar is raised high.  All three rappers are flexin’ their bars showing that they ain’t losing shit when it comes to spittin’, much like Matlock, undefeated and bragadocious. But maybe they should be the ones on trial cause they killed it. The project — which is generating buzz locally since first mention, the first single “One of These Kids”, featuring Prophetic of UMG is dropping 11/20/12 with a video to drop shortly after — brings two of Uni-Fi’s hardest-working, yet dissimilar, emcees together for a head-nodding seven-track ride that is as much about musicality and instrumentation as it is about lyricism and style.

(Milwaukee, WI — Nov. 2012) “Trust me, I’m way out of my lane with this project,” rapper SPEAK Easy said in a recent interview about the EP he and Uni-Fi Records labelmate, Dana Coppafeel, scheduled for release early 2013. “It’s pretty cool, I’m loving it.”

The unusual partnership has been a boundary-pusher for both rappers; and the especially-collaborative process, that engaged national and local artists, musicians and producers, has added a new dimension to their sound as well.

The EP, entitled “Uni-Fi Records Presents...Dana Coppafeel and SPEAK Easy,” will be available early 2013, and for now look forward to the first, and second single which will drop in December.

“In reality it’s not just Uni-Fi project anymore, and I think that symbolizes what Uni-Fi embodies,” SPEAK said.
