Climate change is already an existential threat in South Sudan. Devastating floods in recent months have left thousands of herders without their most precious possessions: goats, cows and cattle. The animals are central to livelihoods, diet and income, but also to age-old customs, including marriage and cultural traditions.

All risk being swept away or scorched by climate change.

In October, massive flooding affected 300,000 people in South Sudan – a hefty figure for a nation of 13 million, scarred by years of civil strife, where infrastructure is poor.

According to the UN World Meteorological Organization’s State of the Climate in Africa report published Monday, average surface temperature across Africa in 2024 were approximately 0.86°C above the 1991–2020 average.

North Africa recorded the highest temperature - 1.28°C above the 1991-2020 average; it is the fastest-warming sub-region of Africa.

"Flooding has continued to be more intense and appears more times within the year than it used to," said Meshack Malo, South Sudan Country Representative for the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). "And that means that any short range then can easily trigger the flooding impact, because water and the soil remain quite saturated."

Women’s organizations across the globe are “stretched to the brink” by funding cuts, UN Women warned on Tuesday. Nine out of 10 surveyed organizations have been financially impacted, and every second is expected to shut down within the next six months.

“They are asked to do more with less – and in some cases with almost nothing at all,” UN Women’s Sofia Calltorp said.

More than 70 per cent of women’s organizations had to lay off staff and more than half has suspended programs already. “The impacts for women and girls in crisis are catastrophic,” Ms. Calltorp emphasized.

“The closure of health facilities forces women and girls – many of them pregnant – to walk for hours, just to access basic health services,” Ms. Calltorp said, stressing that the continued closure of women’s centres often left “survivors with nowhere to turn.”

Women’s organizations receive less than one per cent of electoral aid to conflict affected settings, despite continuously rising humanitarian needs around the world. 

“They want a seat at the table, where funding decisions are made,” Ms. Calltorp stressed, emphasizing that these demands were essential for a more “inclusive, effective and accountable humanitarian system.”


Funding cuts leave pregnant women walking hours for care: UN Women

The UN human rights office on Tuesday expressed deep concern about the deportation of non-US nationals on unclear grounds and without due process.

Approximately 142,000 individuals were deported from the US between 20 January and 29 April, according to official US data. The fate and whereabouts of at least 245 Venezuelans and around 30 Salvadorans removed to El Salvador remain unclear.

"Lawyers don’t know where they are. In fact, no one knows where they are for certain, and we don’t know the legal basis," said Liz Throssell, spokesperson for the UN rights office, OHCHR. "So that is raising huge human rights concerns."

Many were deported under the Alien Enemies Act as alleged members of specific criminal groups.

"The individuals concerned were in many cases told only hours before they were flown out that they were being deported," said Ms. Throssell, speaking in Geneva.

'Powerless' families despair after relatives deported from the United States to South America

Amid reports that 57 children have died in Gaza from malnutrition since the Israeli aid blockade began on 2 March, the UN health agency warned on Tuesday that it only has enough supplies to treat 500 children. 

The World Health Organization (WHO) said that if the situation persists, nearly 71,000 children under the age of five are expected to be acutely malnourished over the next 11 months.

WHO spokesperson Dr Margaret Harris told UN News that treatment for the condition must be considered on a case-by-case basis but that all malnourished children need help immediately as they are at risk of dying.
