Es ist eben so mit den Dingen, die anders sind alles andere, dass niemand mit ihnen rechnet, bevor sie da sind. So verhält es sich wohl auch mit dem Album ‚Momoko‘ des Elektropop-Trios DAS MAER, einem Sammelsurium aus allerlei unterhaltsamen und doch tiefgründigen Kuriositäten, erträumt in einer schlaflosen, isolierten Woche in der Mineaturmetropolis Heidenheim, das nun nach mehr als einjähriger Feinarbeit erscheint. Die Mär vom MAER beginnt mit einem Tanzbären, so unscheinbar zunächst wie drollig, der sich aus Berlin auf eine Reise durch den musikalischen Untergrund begab, auf viel Wohlwollen stieß und so aus einem Einweg-Projekt ein etabliertes Trio zauberte. Auf der anderen Seite der Geschichte steht nun das Debütalbum desgleichen in den Startlöchern: Momoko, der namensgebende Spielzeugroboter, inspirierte DAS MAER – bestehend aus Elektroszeneveteranen Yannek Maunz, Brascon und Johanson – zu einer Langspielplatte, die ihrer ersten Silbe würdig ist. Mehr als eine Stunde klangliches Kontrastprogramm – von Violine und Kinderchor bis TB-03 und Autotune – erwartet Hörerin und Hörer hier. Darin gebettet Geschichten, Fantasien und Klamaukgedichte übers Erwachsenwerden, Verliebtsein, Feiern, das Fahren im 40-Tonner oder im Nachtbus, manchmal herzzerreißend melancholisch, manchmal weltfremd optimistisch und immer mal wieder tief zwischen den Zeilen versteckt. Dem Credo ihres bisherigen Schaffens bleiben die drei Kollaborateure treu: immer der Intuition nach, Genre-Grenzen beherzt überschreiten und sich vor allem nie zu ernst nehmen. Da ist es nun also: Etwas, das so noch nie war und das sich doch so anfühlt, als hätte man es sich schon immer gewünscht.

Sailor & I are back with their latest productions for Life and Death. The two original tracks, while very different in moods, both share lush productions and a dramatic musical storytelling not often found in a typical dance release. While Boys & Girls offers a slowed-down mournful and yet beautiful nostalgic tale of childhood days gone by, Turn Around comes straight out of the gate like a racehorse on fire, flanked by strong strings and a vocal that pleads a case for love that comes straight from the heart. 

And of course rounding out the release is arguably one of the most anticipated tracks of the summer. Ever since it first started falling on people’s ears earlier this year, the Âme remix of “Turn Around” has been the high point of sets by Tale of Us, Dixon, Mano Le Tough as well as the few select others that have had their hands on it up until this point. It’s been giving goosebumps to club goers everywhere and with good reason — this is Âme at their finest, taking the song and extending it into an epic masterpiece that works wonders on a dancefloor while never losing the bewitching essence of the original.

After the unbridled success that was "Volkwein", Super Flu's collaboration with The Dortmund Philharmonic, the always on point Monberry label now revisits the package with the help of some fine contemporary remixers, namely Kollektiv Turmstrasse, Monkey Safari and Bebetta.

Super Flu, aka Herzblut Recordings regulars and German pair Felix Thielemann & Mathias Schwarz, really conjured up some magic with the original so these remixes, which reinterpret in fine style, are more than welcome.

First up are Kollektiv Turmstrasse, a rare act that infuse their sound with something more - extra soul, depth and meaning. On their remix of the title track, they go for a trademark deep, brooding and slowly unfolding vibe with subtle synth modulations, buried drums and a rising sense of tension.

The curious and off kilter German duo Monkey Safari are up next. First they rework 'Bratzke' with a sensitive sense of touch. Underlapping, rubbery drums roll below churchy and hymnal chords. Softly spoken vocals add intimacy and you can see this one really making for quite a moment on the right dance floor. Secondly, they serve up a digital bonus remix of the same track that makes less use of the vocal and places plenty of emphasis on their lush arrangement and true sense of musicality.

Lastly we have Bebetta, a playful producer who infuses her music with charming melody and a real sense of personality. She has also recently won the Tresor Newcomer Award for her impressive DJ sets around Berlin. Her version of 'Volkwein' is patient and spacious. Glowing harmonically it soothes mind body and soul with playful patterns and clever use of filters.

This EP is an elegant and magical release that proves house music can be so much more than a physical and functional thing, and can instead stir real emotion when in the right hands.
