I never really knew Leone but I met her around 40 years ago.  This is her song.

Leone was a friend of my first wife
After we split up I didn’t see her any more

Nel mondo futuro,
gli esseri umani avevano stabilito una cultura in cui completavano insieme i loro ultimi momenti—
〈Il Test di Coppia〉.

Lì, morire da soli non era visto come un “fallimento”,
ma come nient’altro che tristezza.

Così come non si può vivere completamente da soli,
non si può portare la morte da soli.
Il mondo futuro custodiva questa semplice verità.

Eppure—

Quando Satana Claus volse lo sguardo verso l’epoca presente,
un’inquietudine agitata si destò nel suo petto.

Le persone fissavano i loro smartphone,
le conversazioni svanivano,
il dolore era portato nel silenzio,
e innumerevoli invecchiavano senza nessuno su cui contare.

Alla vista di ciò, provò qualcosa tra lo stupore e la collera,
e poi comprese:

«Gli uomini sono così vicini gli uni agli altri,
eppure perché sono così lontani…?»

Accanto alla sua rabbia,
una tenue ombra di tristezza si diffuse in lui.

Per ristabilire la “giusta fine”

Per Satana Claus, la “giusta morte” era un momento condiviso con un altro,
un momento in cui si poteva sentire:
«Perché tu eri qui, sono rimasto umano fino alla fine.»

Il Test di Coppia era il rituale per far nascere una tale morte.

Ma egli capì anche—
non era un semplice insegnamento, né un comando.

«Forse gli uomini sono destinati ad aver bisogno gli uni degli altri.»

Un desiderio per l’umanità cominciò a crescere in lui.

Per colmare la solitudine del mietitore

Satana Claus era un osservatore di anime.
Eppure, attraverso il tempo infinito,
egli stesso aveva raramente toccato un altro cuore.

Così, le emozioni nate dal Test di Coppia—
paura, vicinanza, coraggio, perdono, gratitudine—
splendevano così intensamente da trafiggere il suo stesso cuore.

«Gli uomini… come possono possedere cuori così belli?»

Scelse il Natale,
perché era l’unico giorno in cui le persone potevano diventare un po’ più gentili.

La sua decisione

«Nessuno desidera davvero una morte solitaria.
Semplicemente non sanno come tendere la mano.
Allora… glielo ricorderò.»

Egli resuscitò i saggi del passato e impose Test di Coppia impossibili.
Non per condurli alla morte, ma—

per creare un’occasione di tendere la mano a un altro.

«Aver bisogno di qualcuno non è debolezza.
È la prova di essere vivi.»

Dopo il Test di Coppia

Quando le prove finivano,
Satana Claus camminava sempre da solo per la città.

Illuminazioni scintillanti.
Persone che fissavano i loro telefoni.
Alcuni ridevano, altri piangevano—
i loro cuori interiori invisibili a chiunque.

Si fermò e sussurrò:

«Forse… è proprio il dolore che spinge gli uomini a cercarsi.»

Le sue parole non portavano né rabbia né disprezzo.
Solo una dolce comprensione dell’umanità,
anche da parte di un mietitore.

E sorrise silenziosamente.

«La giusta morte si trova alla fine della giusta vita.
Se possono ricordarlo, è abbastanza.»

L’orlo della sua veste nera ondeggiava al vento,
ed egli svanì nell’oscurità.

Come se egli stesso fosse un’ombra nata per salvare la solitudine.
