Still reeling from the success of 'Wicked Land' and 'Revolution', 'Play With Fire' sees the band truly become the roots outfit that they claim to be. On remix duty are the mighty Dubkasm, with a rare dub mix that veers away from their usual steppas style, marking this as a unique remix. DJ Madd also comes on board with his trademark dancefloor killer. As if this wasn't enough Unit 137 have called upon their most respected producers to come with the fourth and final version, Sleepy Time Ghost & Hylu inna combination style.

On 7th May 2021 we released the debut solo EP by Unit 137 sound system founder and label boss Hylu: Latent Variables Vol. 1. We’re now excited to be releasing this remix to accompany the release by London based producer Anja Ngozi.

Anja Ngozi is a DJ, producer and curator based in London. As a producer, Anja has been noted in Resident Advisor for her “intoxicating reinterpretations” of American R&B artist India Arie. She has played shows at London’s Southbank Centre, The Vinyl Factory, and for Stormzy’s Merky Books. Anja also DJs as part of Creole Cuts and Scene + Heard. She is the co-founder of collective Síbín, alongside fellow DJ and musician Maxwell Owin. Initially beginning as a club night, Síbín has since evolved to be a collective and label, with regular radio shows on Reprezent and Run Dem Radio.

It is with immense excitement we’re able to announce our fourth free release. The highly anticipated debut from the incredible Ghost Writerz is a rework of the classic Gregory Isaacs tune ‘Rumours.’ 

After a very long time locked in the lab at 137, Ghost Writerz are ready to start giving the world a taste of what they're capable of. Having already done the rounds on dubplate for a little while this one is a tried and tested dancefloor killer. 

Ghost Writerz are duo Harry 'Sleepy Time Ghost' Metcalfe and Jason 'Jimmy Screech' Bradshaw. Pioneers of the UK's very-own Sound System Music, their work fuses Reggae, Hip Hop and Jungle with conscious and sometimes raucous lyricism, melodic hooks and virtuoso playing of instruments to damage dancehalls.

Since releasing ‘Youthman Riddim’ Sleepy Time Ghost has been receiving the credit he deserves as one of the most exciting and versatile producers currently working in the UK bass music scene. 

As we prepare to drop his second full length 12” on Unit 137 we thought it was only appropriate to take a look back at Youthman and share some of the heaviest dubplates we’ve been running. 

Selecta J-Man and Ed West, both on remix duty of the original vocal tracks, take them on an exploration through the spectrum of Jungle music. Anyone who’s joined us in session over the past few months will know these tracks mash up any dancehall.

The seventh full-length release on Unit 137 is the second from resident producer Sleepy Time Ghost, who created a major wave with his debut ‘Youthman Riddim’ last year; an assured roots reggae track which brought together long-respected and brand new UK sound-system MCs, Ras Demo (a.k.a Demolition Man) and Lionpulse Sound's Live n Direk, as well as instrumentalists from the 137 camp.

Forward to his latest opus, the Ghost Train Riddim. Joining Jamaican & UK vocal talents with Unit 137 residents, Sleepy drops a 12” which doesn’t easily fit into the brackets of roots, reggae or dub: Throughout, the production fuses live instrumentation with crisp digital production, in Sleepy's inimitable style, which he is becoming notorious for. It's a great example of the Sound System Music driving the current 'New Wave' of UK Sound System Culture. While paying tribute to the foundations, this cut is a surefire dancehall killer and a bridge between the old and the new.

On vocals, legendary reggae sing-jay Macka B is joined by rising star Zico, who has been steadily turning heads over the past five years through his works with the London/Bristol based reggae outfit onlyjoe. Their combination ‘Meditation’ defines the release as a merging of styles, which takes the listener on a journey from the roots of reggae and dancehall through to the modern sounds of UK Steppas. Meanwhile, the second track features veteran Jamaican singer Mikey General on the riddim with his contribution, ‘Jah Can Read Your Thoughts.’ His track fuses a powerful vocal message of Rastafari with the riddim track which, on this version, breaks into a tough dancehall section; again bridging styles and pushing the vocalist in new directions.

The remix in the package comes from Hylu & Jago. This duo have created quite a stir through their previous releases on Unit 137, and they're now regularly sought after by other labels for remixes and, increasingly, originals. Their interpretation is a dark take on modern electronic dancehall, which moves Sleepy’s original riddim track in new directions. Snippets from each vocal track are fused together to bring about something entirely different from the original, focused towards the dancehall, and designed to be played on a big stack, with plenty of super scoops for bass. Sleepy's instrumental rounds off the release, and leaves room for the Ghost Train Riddim to be ridden by other vocalists or instrumentalists, on sound systems all over the globe...

Hylu & Jago are an innovative DJ/MC production team, who work with various musicians & vocalists. Hylu & Jago’s live shows are always creative & versatile, flowing through genres seamlessly, spanning across Dub, Reggae, Jungle and much more.

This is Kosher’s debut release and sees her blend tough Ragga chats with soulful roots revival singing throughout. Kosher was born and raised in Hackney, East London, where she grew up surrounded by the rise of British dance music and Jamaican roots Reggae. Although this is her first release she is by no means a stranger to music. Kosher is a vocalist set to make waves in 2016 and beyond.

The original is complimented with a high-energy one-drop Reggae remix from the duo Ghost Writerz. This version features vocals from Jason ‘Jimmy Screech’ Bradshaw, which accompanies and compliments Kosher’s original vocal performance beautifully.

Unit 137 enter 2018 with this weighty little free download from Ed West. The track explores the relationship between Dancehall & Jungle, sampling a vocal Ed discovered on a white label record with four dub cuts of the ‘Billie Jean’ riddim. The singer is called Squidley Steve and is still relatively unknown to us, despite some research.

Ed West is a producer, DJ & drummer who works with a fusion of styles. Ed has collaborated with some of the top MC’s in the game such as Parly B, RTKal, INJA, Gardna, & of course all of the UNIT 137 family. Ed has released music on Reggae Roast, Tru Thoughts, Born On Road & Boom Sound gaining support from BBC Radio DJ’s such as Rodigan, Toddla T & Don Letts on many of his previous releases.

‘Badman In The Dance’ sets the rhythm for Unit 137 in 2018, a heavy teaser leading up to the labels first album, which drops in April 2018.
