Towards The Black Sun

A meditation on two songs by Paul Clayton, the troubled American folksinger and folklorist, who was prominent in the folk music revival of the 1950s and 1960s, before dying by his own hand. 'Mush Toodin' gets sung & 'Spottie & Dudie' gets hinted at. Between & beyond them are riverside improvisations & mushroom tea infused synth explorations. Recorded by David Colohan & Felix Sonnyboy in Newcastle Forest & The Doghouse, Rath, Co. Longford, Ireland. Originally released as part of a split tape with Lost Trail on Flaming Biscuit Records.

Meditations On Clayton

Martin Carthy recorded Farewell Nancy in 1966 for his 'Second Album' & this is the version we take our inspiration from. In his sleeve notes he says 'An uncomplicated song of farewell in which the fairly standard offer by the maiden to dress up as “some little sea-boy” and go along with her lover is refused gently but firmly. I suspect that she is more relieved than sorry, as her pleas do not seem to carry the ring of conviction. Printed several times in the Journal of the Folk Song Society.'
