ABC 774 mornings host Jon Faine asks United Voice Victorian Secretary Jess Walsh what is driving the trend towards insecure work, such as casual and labour hire employment?

Do employers prefer casual workers because they won't complain, wonders Faine. 

Walsh agrees, saying the ability of employers like 7-Eleven to get away having people on exploitative working conditions is absolutely dependent on having that workforce living in fear.  

Faine says casual work used to be the entry point for people into the workforce - now it seems to be a mainstay.

Walsh says there are now two classes of workers: those with secure jobs and stable incomes, and those in low paid service industries like cleaning and hospitality, where they struggle for shifts, they struggle for hours, they struggle for every dollar and these are the industries that are growing and we've got to think about whether this is the Australia we want to build?

Jess says the key to rebuilding the union movement is yes, being open to new ideas, but also going back to basics and showing people that the union movement is the only vehicle through which people can turn around their lives, end the exploitation, and over time win secure jobs.
