Holidays on secluded beaches; long hikes up a mountain to catch the sunset; an unforgettable meal at a restaurant on the square: her preferred means of escaping reality had become impossible over the last year. Now she relied on her imagination to whisk her away. She closed her eyes and pictured herself somewhere free from the pressures of daily life; the waves gently lapping at her feet, the wind rustling her hair and the sun streaming down on her face.

For his debut release on Loose Fit Records, Leipzig-based producer Planetary Secrets explores themes of escapism, translating his personal take on what escaping reality means to him. Conjuring up fantastical feelings of nostalgia and imagined worlds throughout, the opener, 90s rave-inspired 'Guatemala Dreams', transports listeners into dense jungle, while B-side, 'Burning Fist', is a love letter to vintage video games, specifically Tekken. These two original cuts are backed up by remixes from Lobster Theremin affiliate Pépe and Breaka Recordings boss, Breaka.

It’s an interesting time for Haŵs, having successfully rolled out their parties to popular venues across Cardiff and London with takeovers hosting everyone from Special Request to DMX Krew in the last year alone. Their previous releases on the label side have been more languorous and serene, with their overarching vision primarily holding a strong emphasis on building upon a bedrock of house music, and bolstered with accents of acid, breaks and other subgenres. But since their more recent event bookings have been so notably comprehensive, the sixth EP has taken that full step into developing upon the variety they champion at their parties. This next chapter of their growth actualises itself in the form of Dawl’s ‘Break It Down’ EP, a warehouse-ready, bouncy and charismatic record channelling insatiable vigour from beginning to end. 

‘Break It Down’ on the A-side is a relentless jackhammer of a track, pumped full of rich breaks and clipped acid lines. ‘Subject 91’ flattens the gas pedal even further, with a gated, spectral synth levitating hazily above the militant drums that heave the whole track forward. 

On the B-side, the brawny ‘Proton’ returns to the acidic burn of the opening track, except this one is occupied by chirping synths and oscillations of noise that seem to rise and fall with a trippy authority. Finally, highflyer and man of the moment Kosh employs his natural gift of the gab on the closing remix of ‘Break It Down’ with a raucous rhythm and a regurgitated bassline that never dwindles on its own gusto. 

Despite the substantial weight and pugnacity of this 4-tracker, the staple Haŵs euphoria twinkles through. There’s no shortage in complex drum sequencing, breaks samples and all the other frills, yet the final output is compact and neat. As Haŵs increases its vision more extensively to dance music from across the board, it seems that the best things might at times come as contradictions, and this record’s tone certainly fits the bill.

Fresh off the back of winning the AVA’s ‘emerging producer’ award, Ron sets the bar high with his debut vinyl outing ‘Haarlem’ EP, which pays homage to his new city of residence after moving from Dublin earlier this year.

‘Haarlem’ EP takes the listener on a journey, through the use of euphoric synth patterns, club fueled jungle breaks and epic breakdowns.

@jenkemmag and Steel City Dance Discs unite for a high-energy compilation – each team bringing forth two artists of their choosing for a heavyweight bout across 4 tracks.

All four artists are up and coming international-based electronic musicians and DJ’s, regularly releasing records and appearing on the international club circuit (that once was). The combo represents a global take on Electro, Techno, Drum and Bass, and main room rave-style rhythms.

Jenkem Recordings is the music imprint of Jenkem Magazine, a skateboarding and culture platform, based in New York. Jenkem Recordings’ main goal is to continue to push the strong connections between music and skateboarding by finding new artists to support who have a strong connection to both communities.

Steel City Dance Discs is a record label exported from Newcastle, Australia AKA the Steel City. From House to Gabber, there’s no bracket for S.C.D.D.’s racket – the group has maintained a steady flow of genre-spanning records and tapes since 2016. With the members having originally connected through skateboarding, this collaboration between the two groups came as a natural one.

The Human Movement project has undergone significant sonic development in the past 12 months.  From a well established house project within his underground community of Sydney Australia, Edward Macdonald’s most recent singles have elevated him to more than just connoisseur of taste, but to a producer reaching grandiose heights, one established in a delicate care for the creation of sonic universes. This ethos and new chapter of music has  now combined to create Human Movement’s first solo body of work, KINETIC.

With the release of the body of work  comes the first listen of new Human Movement original, Reframed. Reframed’s grandiose vocal chops, raging string lines and two step drum pattern make for a dark and grungy take on the traditionally glitzy garage genre. While vast in its territories, sonics and inspiration there is something brilliant about its continuity. Each build up is a narrative, each drumline a distant rhythm and each vocal chop a distinct feeling.
