THE UNIVERSAL SIGN FOR CHOKING, the solo project of multidisciplinary artist Jeff Pupa, takes a Gloompop approach to themes of loss, love, and memory in ways that are moving and emotionally draining. The music incorporates elements of synth and electronics, industrial, ambient black metal, pop noir, and the fuzzy reverberation of shoegaze. 

The lyrics, music, and thoughts portrayed in the work are a direct self-dialogue inspired by the loss of two extremely close individuals to suicide, and the sudden passing of his two animal companions, Evander and Ica. Certainly heavier topics, but the album serves as a cathartic exorcism in coping with adjusting to such radical changes in a short period of two years. The hope is for a connection to listeners to embrace / accept pain, and to remember love through memory. 

This is The Universal Sign For Choking's first full-length self-titled release, written and recorded in Jeff's home studio in Somerville, New Jersey. The album was mixed by Riley Geare at Jazz Dad Records in Los Angeles, CA. Mastered by Ryan Cohen at Robot Dog Studios in Burlington, VT.
