Dr Claire Whitehead and Carol Adlam interview bestselling and award-winning crime writer, Val McDermid, about her various experiences of adaptation. Their conversation covers Val’s very first novel which, although never published, was adapted into a stage play; the radio adaptations of her Kate Brannigan novel Clean Break; the ITV series Wire in the Blood and the mini-series A Place of Execution by Coastal Productions. They also chat about the TV series Traces, set in a sunny Dundee and her collaboration with the artist Kathryn Briggs on the forthcoming graphic novel, Resistance, due for publication in May 2021 and which is based on Val’s original BBC radio play from 2017. Val is also kind enough to share her insights into crime fiction’s potential for adaptation, the filming of the first of her Karen Pirie novels, A Distant Echo, in Fife and her favourite foreign crime writers and TV series.

Our guest is Prof. Stephen Gilbert (https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephen-gilbert-31ba2587/) who is a Professor of Medical Device Regulatory Science at the Else Kröner Fresenius Center for Digital Health, Technische Universität Dresden where he teaches and conducts research on regulatory science with a team of colleagues. He is also News and Views Editor, Nature Portfolio - Digital Health. He worked in senior MedTech and Digital Heath roles in industry for 5 years, before returning to academia in 2022.

His research goals are to advance the regulatory science of software as a medical device and AI-enabled medical devices. Innovative digital approaches to healthcare must be accompanied by innovative approaches in regulation to ensure speed to market, to maximum access of patients to life saving treatments whilst ensuring safety on market. His main research interests are in: (i) data sharing and the European Health Data Space; (ii) approaches to market approval of adaptive AI enabled medical devices; (iii) drug<->digital/AI-enabled medical device product realisation; (iv) digital/virtual twins: as an organising concept of the future of healthcare."

Large Language Model-based Chatbots and Medical Regulation

To mark World Haemophilia Day, we sit down with Professor Amit Nathwani of the UCL Cancer Institute to explore his journey to commercialising the groundbreaking haemophilia A treatment, Roctavian. Host Nigel Campbell is joined by Prof Nathwani and Dr. Rick Fagan, UCLB Director of Biopharm, to explore how Amit’s work looking after patients with haemophilia in the NHS instilled a mission to develop a 'one and done' vaccine type approach to the condition. Amit’s lab to market story, working with UCLB, led to the creation of Roctavian, a one-time gene therapy used for the treatment of adults with severe haemophilia A. The therapy, which was licensed to BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc, received marketing approval in Europe in 2022 and US FDA approval in 2023, and is now available to patients commercially.
