Un gioco di parole, uno scherzo musicale. Il racconto di questa canzone è intriso di un'ironia tragicomica. Il protagonista della storia si trova in una situazione idilliaca, pronto a passare una fantastica giornata di mare e di surf, con tutti i comfort del caso. Ma che succede? La sua tavola da surf non si trova, il suo compare è scomparso. Per ingannare l'attesa si fanno nuovi incontri ed esperimenti psichedelici. Il risultato è una sbornia colossale e, inevitabilmente, niente surf.
Una mancanza che è anche musicale poiché, come dice il titolo, manca un quarto alla strofa della canzone; da qui il suo incedere “azzoppato”, su una base ritmica che trae ispirazione dalla “Summertime” dei leggendari Mungo Jerry, mentre le atmosfere giocose e corali vogliono omaggiare i calypso del grande Harry Belafonte, con un'eco di Giamaica e Caraibi. I temi di chitarra e sassofono ci fanno sognare il mare e le onde, ma così come la ritmica, anche i cori di molte voci all'unisono non fanno che ricordarci che manca sempre qualcosa.
Tutto ciò perché gli Unkle Kook amano il surf, ma non sanno surfare. Vengono dal mare ma vivono in città. Come moltissime persone oggigiorno, sognano di ritrovare un contatto con la natura e di costruirsi una vita che gli assomigli di più, ma finiscono per perdersi nella tossicità di questo mondo moderno e frenetico, di cui siamo vittime e artefici. Riflessioni forse un po' ambiziose, ma la morale in fondo è quella di imparare ad accettare le contraddizioni, cavalcarle come onde e soprattutto non dimenticarsi che ridere fa buon sangue.

UNKLE KOOK established its roots in 2018, when five musicians coming from different genres came together with a common passion for surf music. The project was born in Bologna (Italy) and is founded by Andrea Faidutti (guitar), Alex Ascione (tenor sax), Manuel Franco (Drums), Fabio Arcifa (Bass) and Giuseppe Calcagno (Guitar).
In June 2021 their first single “Surf in Maremma” was released by the Brutture Moderne label, and in the same year they will release an EP entitled “Surf Beat”.
The single will get excellent reviews in numerous magazines and blogs and will be described by the magazine Now We Rise as “a trip around the world in three minutes”. UNKLE KOOK, since the birth of their project, have performed in several live shows across the Italian peninsula, making live concerts the core of their energetic and elegant style.
If surf music was a starting point, it certainly did not become a limit, leaving room for a composing style that is often surprising compared to the canons of this genre. The sound remains very electric, reverberated guitars and a sax that gets busy at breakneck speed, floating over a storming rhythm section.
UNKLE KOOK presents itself as an instrumental band, but in live gigs there is no shortage of songs sung with the typical harmonies of the 60s.
In December 2021, while their EP is out, they are already working on a new album in the Duna studio (RA).
