Banofee Pies Records - Unknown Mobile & Mulholland - War Piece

Daucile Moon, which follows @unknown-mobile releases on No Bad Days, Normals Welcome and Young Adults, started four years ago in Vancouver when Levi Bruce was recovering from a broken toe and collecting MIDI files he found in an old geocities archive. It was finished earlier this year in Montreal with help from Mike Silver, AKA CFCF, who added plaintive guitar to complete the album's placid and stargazing style of ambient and downtempo music.

The album takes its name from an old, obscure Canadian jazz song that Bruce describes as "pretty but also with a serious amount of melancholy," which could also describe his new record. In the vein of Pacific Rhythm label-mate Khotin's standout New Tab album, Daucile Moon comprises drowsy beats and spaced-out loops, referencing the pinnacle of early '90s chillout and ambient while infusing it with the dazed sound of Canadian electronic music in the 2010s.

Bruce's process in making Daucile Moon was long but leisurely. He took the melodies from those MIDI files and moved them over to his analogue outboard setup and then back to his computer, creating a digital-analog hybrid that sounds as pleasantly worn as a dog-eared novel. Live instrumentation, like Silver's classical acoustic guitar stylings on "A Windless March Ouest," mingles with occasional dance music references like the subtle acid squelch of "Ravers Sojourn" or the hazy breakbeat of "Oenology."

The album was inspired by various happy memories, from sharing wine with friends ("Oenology") to a dog that Bruce met ("Simone Can't Swim"). The result is a patient and personal record that highlights the best qualities of Bruce's previous work as Unknown Mobile, with his distinct style of melody and soundscaping set free from kick drums and the dance floor. It's telling that Bruce originally sent the record, at first called Melancholic Songs For Dogs, to his parents and two grandmas—this is beautiful, relaxing music whose appeal is universal.

Daucile Moon will be released digitally across all platforms and on limited edition cassette tape available through our online store, Bandcamp, and Seance Centre on July 14, 2019.

Coming through with a slice of much needed summer is long awaited guest, Levi aka. Unknown Mobile. You'll know him well from his well received releases across some of the dance sphere and Canada's finest; Planet Euphorique, Pacific Rhythm, SOBO & ASL Singles Club to name a few. His production style is something tricky to nail down within the confines of a soundcloud bio, but It's safe to say though that his work always manages to hit a certain spot, whilst transcending fads and phases along the way. 

Levi planned this mix for us in his mind as his "first summertime bar patio/terrace/rooftop daytime gig - post covid dreams of prepping the floor for a danceable sunset". This should give you an idea of how much he dives head first into the summery hinterland with his 1-hour-30. Expect flawlessly selected disco and house.. mercilessly and masterfully stitched together for your enjoyment. One of those tapestries of selections where you should treat yourself to switching off; let the messages go unread, the world will keep on turning.

Daucile Moon is the name of Unknown Mobile’s debut album which has been four years in the making. The Canadian producer, real name Levi Bruce, has released a number of records on some well established labels such as Normals Welcome and SOBO. 

The album follows his most recent release on the latter and is an explorative 8 track affair on Pacific Rhythm.Shedding the usual kick drums, Daucile Moon is pure listening material and crosses several genre boundaries while trending toward ambient and downtempo. It features Mike Silver aka CFCF, a fellow Canadian, on the plaintive guitar melodies you hear on A Windless March Ouest, Oenology and Copper Bird Bath.

Today we’re giving you a sneak peak at the A2, Ravers Sojourn. A voice tells you to go with the experience as some moderately tense chords build pressure with a looming acid-like bass. The echoing lead does nothing to release the tension but in fact aids in continuing to build it. An uncomplicated yet bewitching piece, the beauty is in its simplicity.

Although the majority of the album trends towards warmer atmospheres, there are a couple of songs that contrast those moods such as our premiere today and another favourite of ours, Simone Can’t Swim, named after a dog Bruce met. Get your pre-orders in as the album is due out July 15.

Levi Bruce, aka Unknown Mobile, has been a prominent figure of the Canadian Underground for quite some time. He resides in Montreal and has contributed to a number of North American labels. It seems only natural that he is the next release on Planet Euphorique. 

“Mobile Sorcery” could be his most rhythmically diverse 12” yet, recorded in just a couple of weekends it breaks free from 4 to the floor, experimenting confidently with syncopation, voices dipping in and out of focus. The opener Broke Melt presents a driving baseline filled with attitude, flickers of glistening synth arpeggios to soften the clanging drum patterns, working in harmony with delicate top lines. The hypnotic haze of textures carries through the record, A2 lifting in energy; shooting stabs, ricocheted sub base filling the space between commanding snares. The Beat Dub of Sorcery strips the track back to the essentials, resulting in a perfect tool for DJ’s building tension. Surprisingly keeping the essence of the tune whilst offering hints of more dubbed, percussive club pushing UK bass.

The B Side explores more of these unconventional rhythmic themes whilst highlighting the power of melody. Heavenly Depression accurately depicting it’s title, pulling on the struggle of your emotions through an ever-progressing lead woven tightly over sweeping pads. The closing track Wilders Lake ties the record together cohesively, lifted stabs to calm the tripped out percussion swooping in and out, growling bass alluding to darkness. The EP blends genres to create new feelings from familiar foundations, channelling Detroit inspired grit and emotion; well rounded to suit hazed and hedonistic dance-floors.

D.Tiffany's Planet Euphorique has become somewhat a gravitational pull for the sonispheres hotbed of talent for the last few years, drumming up a tangible level of anticipation around each release. This time round it's Unknown Mobile, who has come fresh off the back of his well received yet uncharacteristically downtempo and left-field album on Pacific Rhythm. Perhaps unexpectedly, he dives back into darker and more club focused territories with appropriately named 'Mobile Sorcery', a murky, spellbinding five tracker and perhaps his most face-melting release to date. After announcing on Twitter that this would be his last release for a little while due to educational commitments, this is one to hold close.

Introducing the flip is "Heavenly Depression" which flaunts unconventional rhythmic themes whilst highlighting the power of melody. This cut is one which accurately depicts it’s title, pulling on the struggle of your emotions through an ever-progressing lead woven tightly over sweeping pads.
