For the 10th episode of the Unknown Movements podcast, we have an exclusive live set from Roam — a duo made up of French producers @dc11music and @kerst-techno. The two met through their respective girlfriends, who’d known each other since they were children, and once they realised they shared the same taste in music, they began working together as a live act. Their approach is improvisational, using a modular synth (operated by dc11) and Ableton (operated by Kerst), enriched with multiple effects. Whenever the duo meet in Brittany, they aim to play dark, brooding, and rolling techno without interruption, and yet with enough space to surprise the listeners and dancers, as well as the performers themselves.

For the 11th episode of the Unknown Movements podcast, we welcome Glasgow’s @kairogen — the artist who’s been creating the beautiful textural paintings we’ve been using on the covers for our recent releases. Her artwork has also adorned records from Soma, Aedi, No Signal, and Ancestral Process, and 2021 has seen her debut her own musical compositions on compilations from Soma and Space Textures. We feel incredibly fortunate to be working with such a talented artist, and it’s a great pleasure to have her on the podcast with a selection of deep and hypnotic tracks to see us through the weekend.

PREVIEW: Other Form - Togetherapart (Rowka Remix) [exclusive release]

Arriving five years to the day since the release of his debut 12”, Other Form revisits that EP’s standout track Oktober and enlists the help of collaborators new and old for over 50 minutes of fresh interpretations — each an essential cut in its own right.

Other Form’s titular revisit of Oktober subtly improves the track with a punchier mixdown and a more ’floor-ready tempo — an exercise in refinement from a producer who’s spent five years evolving a sound that’s earned praise from the likes of Paula Temple, Amotik, and Charlotte de Witte.

Now, the remixes begin: first, with a tom-heavy collaboration between Audio Units (Dynamic Reflection, Newrhythmic) and Dotdat (Symbolism, Room Trax), label heads of Observant and figureheads of Bangalore’s techno scene, before giving way to the first ever remix from Lille-born, Berlin-based Justine Perry (Postdynamic, Intra). Next, we have a deep and dubbed-out version from Sardinia-born, Berlin-based Nothing is Real (Bahn, Methodical), followed by a heavily swung offering from Paris’ dc11 (Data Roaming, Cosmic Wave). Then comes a UK bass vibe courtesy of London’s Alternate Current (re:st, Diffuse Reality), whose remix sits perfectly alongside his recent explorations with Other Form. Granada’s Vlaeminck (Rhod, Soptik) takes the track into post-apocalyptic territory before Porto’s A Thousand Details (Edit Select, MORD) closes the release with not one but two brutal reinterpretations.

After an early career making dubstep, London-based Tom McShane made the move to atmospheric, textural techno and unveiled his new monicker @alternatecurrent, enjoying appearances on podcasts such as @seeksicksound and a spot on the debut compilation from @dissonanzerecordings. What strange times we find ourselves in, friends. It feels like the world was a different place when we published the last episode of our podcast — just one month ago. Today, we have a much-needed hour-long mix of gloriously dark techno from the Frankfurt-based producer @willyxparker. Nearing the end of a busy year of remixes, collabs, and appearances on various V/As, Unknown Movements’ label boss @otherform presents ‘Each to Our Own Divide’ — his first solo EP since 2017’s ‘Unmarked Paths’ — which builds upon a recent wave of support from the likes of Charlotte de Witte, Amotik, Takaaki Itoh, Denise Rabe, Kwartz, Stephanie Sykes, Slam, and Robert S, and includes a menacing remix courtesy of Shifted.

Opener ‘Don’t Let Them Taint You’ and third track ‘Further Still’ both channel 2020’s tense and nervous energy into two ’floor-ready cuts, driven with merciless percussion and dirty analogue basslines that weave and morph as expected for the products of live hardware jams. ‘Unpicking Sides‘ and Shifted’s remix of ‘Not My Leader’ (the original version of which appeared on the label’s first V/A earlier this year) both simmer at a slower pace and delve deeper into experimental textures. Together, these tracks showcase the uniquely atmospheric techno for which Other Form is becoming known, and collectively bottle the mood of this year.

Unknown Movements podcast 08 - Other Form

We’re back for our first podcast of 2021 and extremely excited to welcome @psychic-health, who’ve put together an incredible selection of their music, including many unreleased tracks. It’s a huge honour to host them — their self-titled debut album, released on Time No Place in 2015, remains one of our absolute favourite records of recent years.

Gabriel Mounsey and Devon Steffens have been producing and performing their brand of cinematic techno and ambient under the guise of Psychic Health since 2015. Along with producing, the international duo perform hardware-heavy live PAs. The psychedelic and atmospheric combine with driving techno, a mixture perfect for headphones or the dance floor. Their tracks have been featured in the Netflix series Sense 8. Devon also hosts the Triptronics Research series of live performances, with over 400 live electronic performances and counting. A new EP is anticipated early this year.
