Unknown Tone is honored to welcome back artist Sima Kim for our first official release of 2021. This will be Kim’s first release in 5 years and certainly worth the wait. "Plugged Eyes" dives head first into a vast world of spacious experimental electronica. Lush FM synthesis and algorithmic modular pianos cascade though nebulous domains with a near scientific precision. 

Kim, depicts a future, post mankind, where machine and technology blend into nature. An advanced biotech environment, symbiotically linked to the nature world. Tracks were composed and arranged using everything from high end plugins, to homemade DIY synthesizers and oscillators. Imagine you enter a "Temple", then notice something disappear "Vanished Fantasy" as your sight diminishes "Plugged Eyes" you pass through the "Corridor" into the inner sanctum. The listener could theoretically conjure up a map in ones mind, revealing amorphous forms that inhabit these expanding galaxies.

Darren McClure: 

Darren McClure utilizes processed field recordings and software generated sound to create music that focusses on the small details within the larger structure. His emphasis is on sound placement, texture and layers, on top of which fragmented melodies appear and disappear. Originally from Northern Ireland and currently living in Matsumoto, Japan, he has released material on labels such as Oblast, Rain Music, Test-tube, Cherry Music, Standard-Klik-Music, Zymogen, Magic Book and Factotum Arts. 


Miguel Isaza: 

Miguel Isaza is a composer from Medellin, Colombia dedicated to the practice and research of sound in different fields. He co-directs the Éter label, plus other projects aimed to explore territories of sound and listening; with that, participating in concerts, publications and educational processes. This is Danny's first release on Unknown Tone Records...and we are excited to say that this is some wonderfully crafted magical music. Created with the use of only a GameBoy(TM) and a reel to reel tape machine, Danny has gone back in time to mix two sonic formats from opposing mediums: tape and digital. The 8-bit lofi GameBoy(TM) tones meld seamlessly into the warmth of the tape loops, creating deeply nostalgic sounds. 

Most of the works were inspired by his Grandparents 35mm film photography from their 1996 trip to Alaska.

In Danny's words:

I've been working on this one for a long time, and it is the culmination of a year's worth of experimenting with the idea of "8-bit hauntology." 

The process of simultaneously digging back into photos from my grandparent's 1996 Alaska trip and (sort of) learning to compose on GameBoy - the same GameBoy I would have been playing back in 1996 - has opened up a kind of main line back to my childhood, and led to some sounds that, for me anyway, hit a mysteriously deep, magical place.

At any rate, I hope that regardless of your history with Alaska, or the GameBoy, you will give it a listen and find it meaningful in some way.

Paul hails from the labels home town Tulsa, Oklahoma. Recorded directly to an 8-track analog recorder, they began working on the tracks in early 2023. We are very pleased to have their organic arrangements kick off the new year as part of Unknown Tone's new partner label, Yield Recordings, telling Oklahoma story though sound.

Tekla Mrozowicka, a versatile purveyor of ambient (but she can drone, go into harsh noise mode and has a penchant for a good beat, too) has been extremely busy with keeping her stream of sounds at bay. Her main alias is cétieu, which is an ambient-drone moniker of a multifaceted „técieu / cétieu / éctieu” project, under which she has released over a thousand minutes worth of music. In doing so, she has also happened to generate quite a buzz by striking deals with record labels from around the globe. Her efforts garnered her comparisons to Ian Hawgood, Hakobune, Steve Roach, Tim Hecker, Celer and Stephen Mathieu. However, it’s worth mentioning that not all of Tekla’s inspirations are musical. The textural approach with which she sculpts her sounds is an extension of her keen interest in painting and visual arts, that to her is as essential as the sonic constituents.

Wil Bolton

Wil Bolton is an artist working predominantly with sound. His work combines electronic tones with digitally processed acoustic sounds including field recordings and musical instruments. He has exhibited in a number of exhibitions, including A Thing About Machines, Coventry (2009), Trading As…, King’s Lynn (2009), Transfixed Motion / Transitory Still, Sheffield (2009), Sound:Space, Bracknell (2008), Black Powder + White Party, Seoul (2007), and Fresh Interventions, Oxborough (2007). He has also released music on various record labels under the name Cheju and has performed at several events, including Late at Tate (2009), the Glade Festival (2008), Sunrise Festival (2007), and the opening for Julian Opie in the 90s (2007). His work has received airplay on radio stations including Classic FM (UK), Resonance FM (UK), and Digital::Nimbus (USA). He collaborates with Shay Nassi as Shail and has also worked on projects with video artists, choreographers and dancers.

Bio:

Jeff Stonehouse

Jeff Stonehouse is a british avant-electronic composer. He has been experimenting with sound on and off since the mid eighties, originally with tape loops and shortwave radio, and by the nineties he moved into psych/drone guitar music. This led to an ambient/trance/dub phase, releasing music on the Magick Eye label as Spiralhead. Jeff Stonehouse then took about 10 years to focus on a more personal way of using sound as a defence against itself.

In 2010, Jeff Stonehouse became one half of the ambient/drone project called Listening Mirror, along with Kate Tustain. The Listening Mirror project released albums and EPs on Somehow Recordings, Rural Colours, and Hibernate, before being terminated in February 2013.

Jeff Stonehouse then explored different sonic landscapes. Travelling with him was Alicia Merz, who also releases amazing intimate and heartbreaking music as ‘birds of passage’. Together they inhabited and explored the dreamscape that the called Snoqualmie Falls – a place of dark and spectral beauty that was reflected in the music they produced together, releasing an EP on Cooper Cult, and an album on Twice Removed. The Snoqualmie Falls project is currently undergoing a hitatus, to allow Jeff and Alicia to focus on other projects.

Jeff Stonehouse has also worked with the talented Sanja Vernacki, under the name Bewilderness. Recent works also include the self released album Mariners Willow and the soon to be released Become Becoming, a piece written to accompany a gallery show by the American artist Jeanie Tomanek.

In 2015, Jeff Stonehouse signed a deal with The Sublunar Society and released the album On Returning.

Although both of us have basically been trying to turn our attentions to beauty which inhere in elements of minimalism, consecutiveness, silence, darkness, at the beginning of making this album, in an attempt to share each other's sensibility, we interacted very often, and then, eventually found out the affinity. To combine things we see, hear, touch, taste, smell, feel in our everyday life is just only what we wanted to express in our music. We have confidently concluded that it's a thing we've been looking for. We two artists from Asia are, as it were, AWAKENER with SIX senses.”

"an intercontinental collaboration between myself and my dear friend lee chapman, who currently resides in latvia. 

i had the privilege of seeing mark rothko's paintings at the portland art museum a couple years ago. i was so affected by the experience that i went home and created some music in response to residual thoughts and feelings. 'untitled, 1969' was born. 

strangely enough, latvia opened the mark rothko art center in april 2013. lee, by this time already a good friend of mine, acquired a print of one of rothko's paintings and hung it above his piano. 

unbeknownst to me, lee also created a piece of music in response to his experience with one of rothko's paintings, 'light red over black.' 

imagine our surprise when we discovered that we both had created "music for rothko" - a wonderful coincidence!; it only seemed right to collaborate and create one additional "response," and to release the three songs as a set."

A meditation in four parts on the sublime, Untitled explores the ecstasy, fear, hope and despair involved in confronting the world and its manifold mysteries. 
This work was composed and produced with reverence to Renaissance and Baroque masses, modern classical, contemporary minimalism and experimental electronic music. Listeners may hear commonality in the work of Hildegard Von Bingen, Palestrina, La Monte Young, Steve Reich, Arvo Pärt, Swans, Tim Hecker et alia. The worlds built by Milton, Borges, El Greco, Bernini and Cy Twombly are, too, nearby. Untitled is an offering of ambition and love. Conceding the possibility of their completeness, these songs constitute a grasp into our surrounding darkness as an ode to its inconceivable expanse."

Pepo Galán & Max Würden - All Of A Sudden

It was a rainy day in October when the mail man knocked on Max Würden's door. He had ordered an album from El Muelle Records in Malaga, Spain, but when he opened the package it didn't contain only PEPO GALAN's album STRANDED, he found a bunch of CDs in there, published by the same label. What a pleasant surprise, and it turned out to be a true cultural survival kit just in time for the following grey weekend full of rain. Having never actually met in person they came to realize that they already followed each others musical projects online for years, a vivid exchange ensued peaking with a question if they shouldn't work together on an album. 30 minutes later Pepo had sent his first idea, and Max started working on it right away. Musically the two artists had found each other. They immersed themselves so deep into the tracks that at the end neither one of them was able to tell who exactly contributed which sounds to their album ALL OF A SUDDEN. 

They also found commonalities in their work processes. Both like to incorporate cassette tapes (like Max's album RETOUR, Kompakt 2016), and they also like to experiment with guitars...  more

Olan Mill - variations on the letter H

Olan Mill is Alex Smalley and 'variations on the letter H' quite possibly marks the last release for this beautiful project. The album comprises nine instrumental pieces, Smalley draws into his world of piano, guitar and pipe organ. Field recordings occasionally emerge to ensure an even greater sense of space. 'variations on the letter H' is a soft hiss of layered tones that seem to recall the feeling one might have while napping at the base of magnificent waterfalls. A type of heavenly quality pervades the compositions that seamlessly drift in major keys from one movment to the next. 

'variations on the letter H' associates itself musically with more natural, energy, life themes and was recorded over the last year or two in various locations. Olan Mill are not overly concerned with the idea of minimalism, nor is there an inkling of the pieces being charted out. In the end the outcome for the listener can be steady and continuous, like a current or stream that ebbs and flows through the natural world.

This last album from Olan Mill is an uplifting homage to a past romantic body of work which stretches over 6 years. Unknown Tone is pleased to share this work and hope too see more music in the future, whatever form it may take. We hope you'll enjoy this final vestige from Olan Mill and may the beauty they've created throughout the years echo on.

The album is an homage to "The Howl" by Alan Ginsberg as you can read from the title of the album and titles of the tracks too; they are basically short excerpt from his famous work. Album was created using samples captured from different situations, above all from a social point of view and for this reason it intends remembering all womens, men and children underrepresented and outcasts in this materialistic era like Ginsberg tried to do when he wrote the "Howl" in 1954-1955. 
So, as you can see, it's highly reccomended to don't looking for a strict correlation between A.Ginsberg and this music work. We'are talking about a suggestion, a very cerebral idea that finds its main point of contact in the selection process of audio samples and in the overall mood of the production of the entire work.

We are happy to welcome back Oklahoma native Samuel Regan for the first single "Acousma" from the upcoming "Behind Veils" LP. Samuel has been attending Mills Collage in Oakland, CA and has also been busy with new aspirations in digital synthesis and sound design while pursuing his degree in electronic music. This work represents another milestone for the artist and we are pleased to share it with all of you.

I'm thrilled to present my new full length album, Behind Veils. It's my ninth studio album and first release since early 2018. I share it with more pride than any past work, as a culmination of visions and ideas and a taste of what's to come. 

The music arose from a two-year trip into synthesis and digital signal processing, which seem somehow endowed with infinitude and fraught with illusions of control and choice. They can shape sounds that emerge as living and breathing entities: filling uncanny spaces as geometries viewed from impossible vantage points. The songs guide these artifacts out into the daylight to dance and unfold like gestures in their own language. Their subjects include illusion, ecology, philosophy and psychedelia; the theatrical and the paradoxical - which all seem speak to us from behind a veil. 

I hope the music finds you healthy and well. There are so many challenging days behind and ahead of us - when things get hard, sometime meaning collapses and there's no music, and that's okay. An optimism runs through some of these sounds that won't always resonate, but they'll welcome you back... Sometimes an escape into unreality can be the loveliest medicine.

We are so very pleased to welcome Italian artist Federico Mosconi to the label for his full length release of “Sails” a blissful ambient work, that pulls the listeners attention into a sea of light and love. Drifting through field recordings and processed guitar drones this album features a tender reflective mood that embraces the audience as if drifting through moonlit sea scapes at dusk. Federico, an italian guitarist, graduating with a degree in classical guitar and multimedia composition. His live performances range from classical to contemporary styles , from solo to ensemble performances (EMUFest Roma, GAS Festival Goteborg, Festival Angelica Bologna) and orchestral works of authors such as H.W.Henze, B.Maderna and A.Schnittke. His primary dicipline is guitar and the use of Ableton Max/MSP. He’s also released titles on labels such as, Slowcraft Records, Shimmering Moods Records, Midira, KrysaliSound, 3LuneRecords, & Tranquillo Records. This marks Federico's first release with Unknown Tone Records and we are pleased to share this work with the world. Enjoy!
