In episode 298 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed reflecting on the importance of the 'why' over the 'how' in photography, avoiding the need for a 'style' and why subject matter should be based on your passions and interests.

Virginia Turbett was born in 1957 in rural West Sussex and is a British rock music and social reportage photographer best known for her photographs of bands, fans and street culture between the years of 1977 and 1987. In 1977 Turbett was asked by a good friend to photograph the Sex Pistols recording Pretty Vacant for Slash magazine. A year, and many punk gigs later, a chance meeting with a Sounds journalist led to a collaboration which lasted a few years – photographing Punk, Rock, Pop, Heavy Metal, Mods, New Romantics, Skinheads, Two-Tone, Ska, Reggae, the fans, style and fashion of the time. At the same time, Turbett was working on a left-wing paper photographing social and political stories. In 1979 she was asked by the Editor of Smash Hits magazine, to photograph features and interviews and she continued working on the magazine until she gave up photography to look after her two children in 1987. Turbett contributed to many magazines of the late 70’s and 80’s including The Face, Sounds, Smash Hits, and Record Mirror creating images of artists and musicians including the Pistols, Clash, Blondie, Iggy, Andy Warhol, Frank Zappa and Nick Cave. Holly Revell describes herself as an artist photographer who makes collaborative portraits with fellow queer folk exploring transforming identities. They have been working on their current project ‘People Like Us’ since 2017, recording trans, gender non-conforming and non-binary identities and experience, which will be published as a book this year. Other projects include 'DARKROOM'; a series of photo-booth installations at art & club events (2010-14), ‘Transformations’, photographs made with performers reflecting the transition from drag to self in one long-exposure (2016), a book titled ‘David Hoyle: Parallel Universe’ (2017) and DARC which stands for documentation action research collective 2016-19). A Photographic Life-338: A Conversation with Curator, Writer, Editor, and Educator David Campany

In this special episode Grant Scott speaks with Julian Lennon. In a broad ranging conversation they discuss photography, truth, the documentation of memories and the importance of friends and travel to creativity.

Julian Lennon is a musician, photographer, author, philanthropist and the son of John Lennon and his first wife, Cynthia. Lennon started his music career in 1984 with the album Valotte, and has released six further albums. He has held exhibitions of his photography and written several children's books. In 2006, Lennon produced the environmental documentary film Whaledreamers, which won eight international awards. In 2007, he founded The White Feather Foundation (TWFF), whose stated mission goal is to address "environmental and humanitarian issues". In 2020, he was executive producer of the Netflix documentary Kiss the Ground concerning regenerative agriculture and the follow-up film Common Ground. In 2022, Lennon was executive producer of the documentary film Women of the White Buffalo, which chronicles the lives of women living on the Lakota Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. After photographing his half-brother Sean's music tour in 2007, Lennon developed a serious interest in photography. In 2010, his exhibition of 35 photographs called Timeless: The Photography of Julian Lennon with help from long-time friend and fellow photographer Timothy White was held at the Morrison Hotel Gallery, New York. His Alone collection was featured at the Art Basel Miami Beach Show in 2012, and his Horizon series was featured at the Emmanuel Fremin Gallery, New York in 2015. Lennon's Cycle exhibit was featured at the Leica Gallery in Los Angeles, in 2016. In 2023, he showed a series of photographs titled ATMOSPHERIA at the William Turner Gallery in Santa Monica, California. A book of his photographs Life's Fragile Moments was published in 2024.

Fiona Hayes
Fiona Hayes is an art director, designer, consultant and lecturer with over 30 years’ experience in publishing, fashion and the art world. She has been a magazine art director ten times: on Punch, Company, Eve, the British and Russian editions of Cosmopolitan, House & Garden,GQ India (based in Mumbai), MyselfGermany (in Munich), and Russian Vogue (twice). Between 2013 and 2019, as Art Director of New Markets and Brand Development for Condé Nast International, based in London and Paris, she oversaw all the company’s launches – 14 magazines, including seven editions of Vogue. She still consults as Design Director at Large for Vogue Hong Kong. In 2002 she founded independent photography magazine DayFour, publishing it continuously until 2012. Outside the publishing world, she has been Art Director of contemporary art auction house Phillips de Pury in London and New York, and Consultant Art Director of Russian luxury retail group Mercury/TSUM. She currently divides her time between design consultancy for commercial clients, and lecturing. She lives in West London. @theartdictator

Born in London, Peter Fetterman has been deeply involved in the medium of photography for over thirty years. Initially a filmmaker, producer and collector, he set up his first gallery over twenty years ago. Fetterman was one of the pioneer tenants of Bergamot Station, the Santa Monica Center of the Arts when it first opened in 1994. Today, his gallery has one of the largest inventories of classic 20th Century photography in the United States particularly in humanist photography including work by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Sebastião Salgado, Steve McCurry, Ansel Adams, Paul Caponigro, Willy Ronis, André Kertesz, Manuel Alvarez Bravo and Lillian Bassman. A Photographic Life-349: 'The Eye! Digital Archives, Sketchbooks and Feedback'

In this special extended episode UNP founder and curator Grant Scott engages in a conversation with UK based photographer, Harry Borden about the importance his YouTube channel and how to use the platform to remain relevant and engaged with the medium.

Harry Borden was born in New York and brought up on a farm in Devon in the South West of England. He studied photography at Plymouth College of Art and Design. Borden moved to London after graduation, where he worked as an assistant for the photographer Lester Bookbinder. He received his first commission from The Observer in 1994 and continued to work for the title until the present day photographing celebrities, musicians, creatives and politicians. Examples of Borden's work are held in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery, London and National Portrait Gallery, Australia and appeared regularly in Harpers & Queen, Vogue and The New Yorker. In June 2005, he had his first solo exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, London titled Harry Borden: On Business which included 30 portraits of leading business leaders. In 2017 his book Survivor, A Portrait of the Survivors of the Holocaust was published having been shortlisted for the European Publishers Award for Photography in 2014. It was later judged among the 10 best photography books of 2018 by the Kraszna-Krausz Foundation. In 2021 his second book Single Dad was published by Hoxton Mini Press. He continues to work on a commissioned basis and on personal work, whilst also lecturing on the MA Professional Photography at Oxford Brookes University. A Photographic Life-350: 'A Conversation with Harry Borden on Photographers on Youtube'

In this special conversation Grant Scott speaks with photographers and founders of The Farringdon Print Shop, Jake Chessum, James Dimmock and Chris Floyd, to reflect on editorial photography in the 90s and creating a platform to monetize their joint archives.

Jake Chessum’s timeless and engaging celebrity portraits have appeared in many prestigious publications and the range of celebrities he has been commissioned to photograph span the worlds of film, politics, sports and music. Born in Croydon, South London, Chessum studied at St. Martin’s School of Art and after graduating began his photography career in London, where his first commission was for Elle magazine before he started working for The Face beginning an enduring relationship with the title. In 1999 he moved permanently to NYC where he continues to live. James Dimmock completed a degree in at Wolverhampton Polytechnic, and the following week moved to London looking for work. Weeks turned into months. Standing outside Metro Studios in Farringdon dejected. Along came a perky photographer and asks him what's up? The photographer was Jake Chessum who listened to Dimmock's story and gave him the name and number of the owner of a studio and said to mention him. James began his career shooting for British style magazines The Face and iD and began to work in the US photographing Moby and Bono for the cover of Spin magazine. This was swiftly followed by Metallica, Radiohead, and AC/DC for Rolling Stone. Chris Floyd is a British photographer born in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire. He moved to London in 1990 to pursue a career in photography having completed a BTec Photography course. In 1994, he started working for Loaded magazine as well as The Face and Dazed & Confused and his photography became associated with the era of ‘Britpop’. He was selected for the National Portrait Gallery, London Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize in 2008 and 2013. Chris has also photographed advertising campaigns for international brands. As a director he has produced moving image work for Avis, Anthropologie, Mr Porter, UBS, and The Smithsonian. Fiona Hayes is an art director, designer, consultant and lecturer with over 30 years’ experience in publishing, fashion and the art world. She has been a magazine art director ten times: on Punch, Company, Eve, the British and Russian editions of Cosmopolitan, House & Garden,GQ India (based in Mumbai), MyselfGermany (in Munich), and Russian Vogue (twice). Between 2013 and 2019, as Art Director of New Markets and Brand Development for Condé Nast International, based in London and Paris, she oversaw all the company’s launches – 14 magazines, including seven editions of Vogue. She still consults as Design Director at Large for Vogue Hong Kong. In 2002 she founded independent photography magazine DayFour, publishing it continuously until 2012. She is Co-Author and Art Director of The Fashion Yearbook, and creative director of books for South African media consultancy Legacy Creates. Outside the publishing world, she has been Art Director of contemporary art auction house Phillips de Pury in London and New York, and Consultant Art Director of Russian luxury retail group Mercury/TSUM. (Fiona would like to point out she is not Russian: she is proudly Irish and studied Visual Communication and History of Art and Design at NCAD Dublin.) She currently divides her time between design consultancy for commercial clients, and lecturing at Oxford Brookes University, the Condé Nast College of Fashion and Design, London, Nottingham Trent University, Ravensbourne University, and Leeds University. A Photographic Life-357: 'Colm Pierce, Taking Time, and Teaching Photography'

In this monthly conversation series Grant Scott speaks with art director, lecturer and creative director Fiona Hayes. In an informal conversation each month Grant and Fiona comment on the photographic environment as they see it through the exhibitions, magazines, talks and events that Fiona has seen over the previous weeks.

Fiona Hayes
Fiona Hayes is an art director, designer, consultant and lecturer with over 30 years’ experience in publishing, fashion and the art world. She has been a magazine art director ten times: on Punch, Company, Eve, the British and Russian editions of Cosmopolitan, House & Garden,GQ India (based in Mumbai), MyselfGermany (in Munich), and Russian Vogue (twice). Between 2013 and 2019, as Art Director of New Markets and Brand Development for Condé Nast International, based in London and Paris, she oversaw all the company’s launches – 14 magazines, including seven editions of Vogue. She still consults as Design Director at Large for Vogue Hong Kong. In 2002 she founded independent photography magazine DayFour, publishing it continuously until 2012. She is Co-Author and Art Director of The Fashion Yearbook, and creative director of books for South African media consultancy Legacy Creates. Outside the publishing world, she has been Art Director of contemporary art auction house Phillips de Pury in London and New York, and Consultant Art Director of Russian luxury retail group Mercury/TSUM. (Fiona would like to point out she is not Russian: she is proudly Irish and studied Visual Communication and History of Art and Design at NCAD Dublin.) She currently divides her time between design consultancy for commercial clients, and lecturing at Oxford Brookes University, the Condé Nast College of Fashion and Design, London, Nottingham Trent University, Ravensbourne University, and Leeds University. Bill Shapiro served as the Editor-in-Chief of LIFE, the legendary photo magazine; LIFE’s relaunch in 2004 was the largest in Time Inc. history. Later, he was the founding Editor-in-Chief of LIFE.com, which won the 2011 National Magazine Award for digital photography. Shapiro is the author of several books, among them Gus & Me, a children’s book he co-wrote with Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards and, What We Keep, which looks at the objects in our life that hold the most emotional significance. A fine-art photography curator for New York galleries and a consultant to photographers, Shapiro is also a Contributing Editor to the Leica Conversations series. He has written about photography for the New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, the Atlantic, Vogue, and Esquire, among others. Every Friday — more or less — he posts about under-the-radar photographers on his Instagram feed, where he’s @billshapiro.

To mark the publication of his book What Does Photography Mean to You? The presenter of the A Photographic Life podcast Grant Scott spoke online with Bill Shapiro about the book, his process creating the podcast and what he has learnt from listening to the photographers who answer the question he sets them each week. Grant Scott is the founder/curator of United Nations of Photography, a Senior Lecturer and Subject Co-ordinator: Photography at Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, a working photographer, and the author of Professional Photography: The New Global Landscape Explained (Routledge 2014), The Essential Student Guide to Professional Photography (Taylor Francis 2015), New Ways of Seeing: The Democratic Language of Photography (Taylor Francis 2019). His most recent book What Does Photography Mean to You? was published by Bluecoat Press in November 2020. Each week Grant presents the A Photographic Life podcast in whic he asks photographers from around the world the question that forms the title of his latest book.
