The latest Unsound Podcast is from Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe, composer of the score for the horror film 'Candyman', which he will perform live at Unsound Kraków 2021 on October 15th. (Tickets here: tinyurl.com/54pvzymz)
We asked Robert to create a mix that explores some of his favourite film scores The results include a spectrum of classics and obscure or forgotten gems, spanning experimental, contemporary classical, electronic music and beyond.
Robert says: 'With this mix I wanted to focus on several all time favourites of mine in terms of film music and all over film sound. Also I wanted to give the listener a window into my own process for scoring film. The way in which each of these examples navigates the cinematic space, they address a myriad of moods and genres. Whether tense, ecstatic, melancholy, reverent, absurd, contemplative or whimsical, each selection provides an intention and a pathway into the landscape of the world it finds itself tethered to. It is this connectedness that makes for an overall complete work and cements the idea. I hope you enjoy.'

Liara Kaylee Tsai is DJ and producer who taps into the divine through her use of hypnotic acid electro and techno sounds. Her sets are an expression of her magic, weaving spells to show those who listen the sacred. To be on the dance floor during a performance is to surrender and become one with nothing and everything simultaneously. It is her hope that she can show those who are willing to pierce the veil and recognize their own divinity and power. She is currently based in Iowa City, but travels throughout the Midwest to conduct sonic pilgrimages.

Though very much part of the lo-fi techno movement of recent years, Florian Kupfer’s past includes six years as a soprano choir boy. As such it is no surprise there is a real sense of enchanting grace to his work, which most often comes on LIES, but also on Russian Torrent Versions and Wille Burns’ W.T. Records. Whether mechanical and menacing or sombre and heartbreaking, his grainy grooves always manage to cast a spell on the dance floor. 

The mix he serves up here makes scant use of drums, especially early on where lingering piano solos, looming ambience and foreboding acoustic guitars add up to something incredibly powerful despite being so sparse. Grinding drums and malfunctioning synths eventually take over and work to soundtrack a desolate industrial space where all traces of humanity have long gone. It’s bleak but beautiful, much like everything to which Kupfer puts his name.

Recorded at Modern Art Museum of Bologna (MAMbo) on 8th June, as part of Biografilm Festival for Julian Charriére's opening solo show "All We Ever Wanted Was Everything and Everywhere".

Julian Charriére's work bridges the realms of environmental science and cultural history. The exhibition includes a wide selection of works such as photographs, installations, sculptures and videos, touching upon the history of science, the development of media culture, the romantic vision of exploration and the modern ecological crisis.

The set was loosely structured around the themes found in the show, specifically focussing on underwater artifacts & radioactive sites.
