This is the first in a talks series originally broadcast on dublab radio featuring conversations between contributors to the Unsound 'Intermission' book and album, created as part of the 2020 festival.
Here, Chris Watson and Jana Winderen – two of the world's best known field recordists – engage with writer, artist and curator Kristen Gallerneaux.

This second in a series originally broadcast on dublab radio featuring conversations between contributors to the Unsound 'Intermission' book and album, created as part of the 2020 festival.
Musicians Ben Frost and Tim Hecker speak with writer Andy Battaglia. The recording was made earlier this year.
The 'Intermission' album features tracks from Ben and Tim, while the book includes an essay by Andy. They discuss Ben and Tim's contributions to the album, impacts of Covid-19, performing, scoring for film and TV and more.

"Here's a mix of music that inspired 'Break' – heavy dubstep, LCY percussive madness, techno that gets you in its teeth + cameos by Merzbow, Black Flag, Painkiller, Dickie Landry et al. Also included are some never- or as-yet-unreleased Relaxer songs, incl. one 'Break' outtake.

"Walk With Your Friends" by Warlockz comes in towards the end. It was one of the first dnb tracks I ever got obsessed with, back in '03, planting a serious seed before I really understood anything about how electronic music was made, performed, or conceptualized.

My bandmate Hugh from Black Eyes bought it in Seattle while on tour and I taped it off him, alongside This Heat's "S.P.Q.R.", Outhud and Albert Ayler "Love Cry". It is such an all-out banger, I would listen to it over & over and imagine what it would feel like to perform this music live.

Inspired by that twenty-year-old mixtape, I tried to pack in all the textures of that time: spine tingling propulsion, sneering, psycho noise intrusions and secret hooks. Dreams come true, in their way. Enjoy."

For our second Truancy Sessions of 2025 we're excited to bring on Dj Wiggles, an artist who in the ever-evolving landscape of electronic music has managed to cultivate for herself a multifaceted breakthrough career that seamlessly blends DJing, event curation, her own label and a wonderful mix series to boot. Initially immersing herself in dance music whilst at university in Brighton, inspiration from a community of like-minded individuals and local events paved the way, before a move to London marked a significant evolution in her artistic development. Living near the now closed down Pickle Factory, the eclectic late-night sets of artists like Margaret Dygas, Jane Fitz, and Call Super, combined with the music of peers such as re:ni and Batu, helped shaped her distinctive approach to DJing and curation. Kicking off kinetic in 2019, the platform initially started out as a radio show on 1020 before branching out into a mix series on Soundcloud a little later. Since then, kinetic has flourished, hosting events across South London and establishing a regular home at the much beloved Ormside Projects.. With a tingling take on contemporary bass music and delicately left-field sub heavy sounds, previous guests have included Dub Athlete, upsammy, Jurango and Nono Gigsta to name just a few. More recently she inaugurated kinetic as a label with the release of 5RVZ's Trench EP, marking yet another milestone in pushing the platform forward. For this Truancy Sessions mix, Dj wiggles has crafted a deeply-considered trip that embraces emotional subtleties and textural transitions. Reading between the lines with tracks needing to find their placing in the electronic landscape, she's able to weave together tracks that resist easy categorisation, highlighting the beauty  of those in-between moments with a layer of unpredictability.

Brian Leeds has spent a decade exploring electronic music’s murky corners under a range of aliases – from blown-out house and ambient to deep-fried trap and drill. As Loidis, he released one of 2024’s best albums, the minimalist dub techno LP ‘One Day’. 

Now, returning to his primary @huerco_s handle, the Philadelphia-based shapeshifter records a two-hour mix of rhythmic psychedelia for DJ Mag's Recognise series, and speaks to Michael McKinney about his family ties to the Jersey Devil, growing up in bands, his West Mineral Ltd. label, and learning to slow down.

Schmidt, Drew Daniel and Max Eilbacher discuss their affinity for the composer, writer and multimedia artist as well as the process of reviving the piece in their own idiom. Cultural commentator and stylist Ayishat Akanbi presented a key talk at Unsound Krakow 2019, including ten practical steps to help navigate the linguistic landmine of social media. As Ayishat explained: “The digital discourse that shapes our cultural landscape is a hotbed of conflict, shaming, one-upmanship, and misunderstanding. It’s hard to be an avid online user, without becoming disillusioned by the eagerness to see the worst in people. But I do believe we can use the Internet to further our understanding, and create multiple avenues for empathy if we are disciplined in our use."

Our counterculture is deeply rooted in the status quo it proclaims to oppose. Concerns around inclusion, economics and “cancel culture” occupy our attention and fuel the compromises we make. Meanwhile, institutions co-opt once progressive concepts and our scenes may be dominated by brands, opaque funding models and celebrity culture. Through being open about the systems we are complicit in, this discussion explores what our communities stand to lose and how much more we have to gain. Moderated by Tayyab Amin, with Frankie Hutchinson of Discwoman, Mat Dryhurst, Teto Preto's Laura Diaz and DeForrest Brown Jr.
