The "shorts" of my uploads. Most tracks are based on actual Medieval and Renaissance works, with the exception of Synastria which is, as detailed elsewhere, a riff of mine old enough to drink.

Pretty much everything here is a single-take live looping recording. 

Contrary to popular belief, this is not the music of fairies in the woods; this is the music of little girls playing in gravel-strewn urban play grounds, pretending to be fairies in the woods..

To paraphrase Brendan Perry, this stompy dance tune was all the rage sometime during the 14th century. Whoever wrote it down into the Add MS 29987 manuscript knew that rather well.

Saltarello 2

Galician poet Martin Codax wrote several songs about playing in the waves with one's beloved, in a work known as Cantigas de Amigo. 

This is one of them.

Live at WL17B

A live recording of the two Thog tracks played at a local open mic night. Tracks were broken into a set of loops and additional send effects were used, no additional mixing etc beyond levels during the set.

“Shoegaze Medieval is based on the ballad Corps Feminin (c.1390) by the ars subtilior composer Solage (c.1340-1400), examining and reworking its materials within a loose and blurry context. All four instruments fulfil equal roles within the work’s heterophonic surface, cycling through the song’s pitch material in loosely constructed canons, but with newly conceived rhythms and durations. The electronic component is made from a series of manipulated audio recordings of the piece, processed and layered again in canonic textures to provide a hazy and psychedelic wash behind the instruments. This process draws from the subgenre of indie and alternative music known as ‘shoegaze’, which came to prominence in the UK in the late 1980s and is noted for its ethereal mixture of obscured vocals, guitar distortion, effects pedals and feedback.”

Shoegaze Medieval

The Second Life presence of an artist who does it completely different in her First one. Live looping with acoustic instruments of the mostly medieval persuasion and the odd synths for good measure. Improvisation, ostinati, drones and some very old tunes thrown in the mix. Add to that some guitar equipment from the 90s and who knows what else natural selection might bring!
