Blending real audio samples from the Antarctic and a haunting four-part composition, come on a voyage to the southern continent. Starting at Hobart, the gateway to Antarctica, we set out on a journey across the Southern Ocean to Antarctica and share the beauty, the often-ferocious conditions, and the majestic wildlife we encounter on the way. The final fourth movement is a call for action, on how we can limit the impact of climate change on this precious environment.

AI and the Future of Health

Greater Sydney is growing at an exponential pace – both in terms of its powerhouse economy and diverse, aspirational population. This presents great opportunities, but also challenges – particularly in providing quality care to the expanding population, which is ageing and faces increasing rates of chronic diseases.
 
This live panel discussion, facilitated by award-winning ABC health and science reporter Tegan Taylor, brought together health leaders Professor Valsamma Eapen, Dr Mike Freelander MP and Amanda Larkin. The discussion explored how in order to provide quality, accessible healthcare to Greater Sydney, an unprecedented level of collaboration is needed between communities, universities, government, and local healthcare districts (LHDs), and investment needs to go beyond traditional infrastructure.

MedConnect: Greater Sydney health landscape

The ocean provides essential services to humanity and the planet. Ocean currents move seawater, heat and dissolved gases from one ocean basin to another, and vertically from the sea surface to the abyss. These actions help the ocean mediate the impacts on the planet being warmed by the sun in the tropics and being cooled by outgoing radiation in the polar regions.      

But how and why does the ocean absorb heat in one place and deliver it to another?  

Emeritus Professor Trevor McDougall shares his insights and discoveries in ocean physics, including the ocean's critical role in climate regulation. Trevor, with a PhD predating the discovery of El Niño and widespread awareness of human-induced global heating, brings a wealth of experience to the discussion. 

About Trevor McDougall: 

Emeritus Professor Trevor McDougall received the 2022 Prime Minister's Prize for Science for his discovery of four new ocean mixing processes and his work to define the thermodynamic properties of seawater. He recently retired after 11 years at the School of Mathematics and Statistics, UNSW Science.

Her face is red from sunburn in an oval shape a mark left behind from the veil she has removed and was wearing when she was sunburnt.

12. Cigdem Aydemir: Stasis (a map of home) 2019

Nine small videos are arranged on a TV screen in a grid format (3 by 3). Each video depicts a similar scene. A woman in all black, wearing leather gloves, a leather jacket and a long black sheer veil. She is sitting on a black Harley-Davidson motorbike. The bike is still, set in a studio and the background scenery is a projected moving image of a typical Australian Outback landscape. The woman waves to invite a person into view, the person gets on the back seat of the motorbike and holds on to the woman's hips, she starts the bike, the breeze starts to blow, and the woman pulls out a length of her black sheer veil that begins to blow in the wind at speed. The frame rate of the videos has been slowed down and the figures seem to be moving in slow motion. All 9 videos are running simultaneously intentionally out of sync.

13. Cigdem Aydemir: The Ride 2017

A large 4-tiered conical-shaped ceramic vessel with copper metallic glaze sits inside a white display cabinet with glass walls. The bottom tier of the sculpture is a large half sphere, the second tier is a flattened spherical shape that has a stretched long neck leading to a small spherical third tier, and the top tier is a small conical shape with an opening at the top. Each tier reduces in size from bottom to top. A separate white crown-shaped ceramic piece sits loosely over the top of the second tier. There is a shiny reflection on the surface of the metallic glaze and the fingerprints of the artist can be seen on the surface of the vessel.

A large white porcelain vessel with three tiers sits in a tall white display cabinet with glass walls. The vessel has two spherical tiers with a conical tier that is open. In a discussion led by Dr Louise Messara, NSW Health Strategic Medical Operations Unit Director, experts from across the Australian health landscape, including NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant, Dr Jan Fizzell, Ms Karen Booth, Dr Michael Wright and Professor Eleanor Beck shared insights into the future health workforce in Australia.

Munira Tabassum Ahmed is Winner of the UNSW Culture Awards, Art Collection Writing Prize - for her breathtaking poem ‘The Overlaying’ in response to the artwork ‘Desert rain 2’ by artist Michelle Teear who painted this artwork based on a trip to the Pilbara in north Western Australia.

Munira Tabassum Ahmed is an established writer and poet. Her work has been published, she has received numerous awards, residencies and scholarships, she’s currently working on her first novel and is a second-year medical student at UNSW

The Overlaying

In today's health landscape, consumer involvement is crucial for high quality and impactful clinical research. Funders now recognise the importance of including consumer voices in grant applications. While meaningfully interweaving community needs and lived experiences into research can be challenging due to factors like rigid organisational processes and knowledge gaps, researchers are increasingly looking for innovative strategies and best practice approaches to bridge these gaps. This growing commitment is paving the way for greater levels of involvement and more effective partnerships between people with lived experience and health researchers.

 

In this discussion led by Janelle Bowden, Community and Consumer Research Consultant, experts from diverse research backgrounds and lived experiences including Emma Tinkler, a consumer advocating and living with Parkinson’s Disease and Multiple Sclerosis; Karena Conroy, Manager of the Consumer and Community Involvement Program at The George Institute; Robert Monaghan, the inaugural Manager of First Nations Health Research at the Kirby Institute; and Steven Marsh, Consumer Chair for Consumer and Community at NeuRA—highlighted the importance of engaging consumers and people with lived experience in research. They explored why genuine collaboration between researchers and those with lived experience not only enriches the research process but also drives more relevant, meaningful, and transformative outcomes.
