Asian nations are facing a dramatic rise in medical costs as they plan for the looming demographic transition to much older populations. Rafal Chomik, from the Centre of Excellence in Population Ageing Research (CEPAR) at the Australian School of Business, says that Asian governments have the fiscal capacity to keep expanding their health systems, but they should heed the successes and failures of reforms in the region and elsewhere to avoid the excessive cost growth seen in the West. Thailand is cited as a good example, and Australia’s strong front line of GPs as well as its pharmaceutical benefits scheme are two initiatives worth emulating, according to CEPAR investigators.

In this episode, we discuss the powerful, magisterial closing pages of Annie Ernaux’s The Years (pp.182-225) alongside philosophical work in progress by Alice Harberd, one of our hosts. In this paper, Alice considers various ‘narrative’ theories of the self, and argues that, when it comes to the articulation of a sense of self, ‘narrativity is a choice’. We examine Ernaux’s intertwining of personal and sociological selves and ponder to what extent it embraces, or resists, narrative form. We are joined in the UCL Studio by Emmanuel Campion-Dye, a Philosophy PhD student and an ever spirited and probing member of our Philosophy and Literature Reading Group.

Season 5, Episode 10 - Driving Climate Innovation Through Start-Ups

Experts from UNSW Australia Business School gave an independent analysis of the Federal Budget 2016 in a roundtable discussion at the Museum of Sydney on 4 May 2016.

Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison readied the 2016 Budget with a close eye on the forthcoming election.  He didn’t have much room to move – delivering a budget with few surprises and forward projections based on an optimistic outlook.

The BusinessThink 2016 Budget roundtable analysed the announcements in Canberra, and new measures presented by Scott Morrison. Moderated by Julian Lorkin, the panel of UNSW Business School experts reacted to key budget measures, such as new tax breaks and regulations, as well as ideas around taxation and stimulating the economy that will shape the Australian business landscape.

The panel included:
• Professor Richard Holden (looking at the economic impact of the budget).
• Professor John Piggott (the budget implications of superannuation and taxation).
• Professor Neil Warren (taxation implications for various sectors, including public sector economics, with a special focus on taxation policy and distributional issues).
• Associate Professor Fiona Martin (taxation issues such as tax avoidance by multinationals).

The academic panel was introduced by Professor Chris Styles, the Dean of the UNSW Business School.

Professor Julie Cogin, Deputy Dean & Director AGSM, will present on the latest networking research. While many business professionals recognise the value of networking, few understand the fundamentals that drive and underpin its success. Professor Cogin will explore the conditions under which networking is most effective and provide new insights into networking’s return on time invested.

As managers and executives are increasingly pressed for time, networking can seem like an ever evolving time sink. Professor Cogin will examine how optimizing networking activities can increase job performance and limit time expenditure. Professor Cogin will be joined by industry panellists who will share their views from a workplace perspective.
