Basside brings the sass to Sorry Records. 

5 years in the making, Miami Bass duo Basside return to Brooklyn label Sorry Records with ‘FUCK IT UP’ for their second EP, out tomorrow. The six-track release is entirely produced by SOPHIE after inviting them to her studio in LA in 2016 following seeing the duo at Miami ii Points Festival. All six tracks were produced during that session. 

Basside are childhood BFFs Que Linda and Caro Loka who have been local Miami legends for a while now, having been performing since 2015. Bringing their booty-rattling bass to the masses, the duo have shared stages with Miami Bass icons such as L’Trimm and 2 Live Crew and released their first self-titled EP in 2017, also on Sorry Records and was later remixed by label affiliate Drummy.

The tracks featured on the ‘FUCK IT UP’ EP have long been fan favourites and supported within sets from PC Music founder A. G. Cook, Charli XCX, Jimmy Edgar, and Machinedrum, as well as SOPHIE herself including them in her DJ sets at the likes of Primavera Sound and Miami’s Ultra Music Festival. 

In a previous interview with Crack Magazine, the duo mentioned that they want their music ‘to make people feel loose, empowered, sexy… but also make them laugh a little bit’ which is certainly showcased throughout ‘FUCK IT UP’ - the last track ‘CRAZY EXPENSIVE’ is the ultimate power anthem, reminding you to know your worth.

In the wake of SOPHIE’s passing, Basside and Sorry Records have decided to finally share these tracks, leading with SOPHIE’s remix of NYC2MIA - a track that was previously released on Basside’s 2017 self-titled EP. The rework combines SOPHIE’s signature hyperreal production style and Basside’s catchy, playful chant “New York to Miami/no bras, no panties”. It’s the perfect pairing. 

Talking about the timing of the release, Que Linda said to Miami New Times, "the passing of Sophie made us realize that time is short and we shouldn't wait any longer. We also wanted to give a gift to everyone that's heartbroken."

The proceeds from the single are being donated to Sylvia Rivera Law Project; a collective organisation that works to guarantee that all people are free to self-determine their gender identity and expression, regardless of income or race, and without facing harassment, discrimination, or violence.

It's getting hot in here with three new perreo cuts from Miami's finest Nick León.

Following a string of self-released EPs and an appearance on NAAFI, Nick León returns to Tra Tra Trax later this week - recalling the first sonic encounters on the radio when they were kids and sampling vocals from some of their childhood idols. He's also invited Henzo, Kelman Duran and Maral to put their spin on the tracks. 

Nick León previously released on Tra Tra Trax last year with a collaborative record alongside Bitter Babe who made her production debut. He’s a prolific producer and sound designer in his own right, known for mixing organic textures with club polyrhythms and sci-fi sound design. One of our favourite producers, Nick is also affiliated with Space Tapes Miami and has worked on records with INVT, Lao, Kaxien, LTAV, PRJCTN and more. 

Based in Colombia, Tra Tra Trax is run by Nyksan, Defuse and Veracco and was launched in July 2020 with an EP from DJ Pai. Since then they have released records from Luca Durán and OCTUBRXLIBRV as well as featured remixes from Florentino, AYA, Ikonika, BADSISTA and more.

There’s an interesting resurgence of dub-infused techno happening right now. RA mentioned dub techno as one of the key stories from this summer, but not referencing the old school sounds of Basic Channel and their Chain Reaction label, instead it’s much wider soundscape with softer and hazy palettes cropping up across the board. This also translates to ‘deeptech’ and ‘deep-technoid’ - two sounds that Paris-based producer and DJ Beatrice M. is fiercely championing. Combining headier bass music and techno, it’s not a new sound by any means but the way that Beatrice M. approaches their sets and productions, in this incredible psychedelic style, they’re creating new context for these sounds. Something that people have latched quickly onto, evident through the label signings and esteemed gigs Beatrice has played in the last few years. It's certainly what captured my attention as I dig deeper into this world of 'low end psychedelia', a sound that is becoming more popular in both the techno and bass scenes, one I've become obsessed with and have discovered appears a lot in France with producers and labels such as Christian Coiffure, Trois-Quarts Taxi System, Jan Loup, Sindh, Comic Sans Records, Blue Night Jungle, Cosmic Wave Records and SousTraitance alongside Beatrice and their Bait label.

On Bait's third various artist release, the label seeks out the weird and wonky with the apt title 'Out Of Step'. Standing out from the rest of the label's releases, 'Out Of Step' features tracks from ex.sses, lloydfears, gillielove, VCR and lastly Ōtone, who's track we're premiering today. 

Berlin-based artist Ōtone brings organic and ASMR-like elements to the release with their single 'Valve'. Creating what they describe as 'mineral grooves' as they build these sonic worlds via their collection of field recordings, 'Valve' is a chugging swampy track that leaves you feeling like you've hiked through a metallic jungle, clanging against the various plant life on your journey.

we’re back in new york this week with the dynamic artist no sir who has contributed an all production mix for the 212th edition of the 909 podcast. recycling old projects and combining them with unreleased and forthcoming bits, no sir has created a deeply immersive environment within the mix that showcases their range as a producer, weaving through ambient, aquatic dub, tripped-out vocals and bass-heavy rhythms. it’s low end therapy. 

based in brooklyn, no sir made their production debut in 2021 and has since gone onto releases on internationally renowned imprints such as 3024, w133, faux poly, early reflex and woozy. a rising artist within new york city’s nightlife scene, no sir is a resident of the much-loved party series the level party alongside the likes of andrew devlin, nigelthreetimes, yibing, alien d and kfeelz.

certainly one to watch, we catch up with no sir about their early relationship with music, approach to production, digging deeper into their creative process and the story behind their most recent ep on early reflex with more music on the way very soon!

kennzoid is a DJ and nightlife photographer who has started throwing the bass-forward parties alongside Maharam called Final Passage. Since launching the event series they've booked the likes of Atrice, Ma Sha, Viiaan, Apok, Prime Suspect, Jenga and mush.

a kaleidoscopic session from one of the uk’s best gems, wordcolour. an artist who excels in storytelling through their productions, this approach to his craft is translated in podcast 215 as the mix gently starts with stunning ambient moments before building into a masterclass of drum programming. pacing through halftime, techno and IDM, it’s an unpredictable 72 minutes with wordcolour showing us his cards — a hand dealt with authenticity as a marker of where he’s at right now as a dj and producer. 

wordcolour made his production debut on lapsus records in 2020 before heading over to fabric’s esteemed imprint houndstooth where he released ‘juno way’ - a breakthrough record as such for wordcolour. this was the beginning of a long-standing relationship with houndstooth where he also went on to release ‘bluster’ ep featuring remixes from djrum, dj python and the soft pink truth, his debut album ‘the trees were buzzing, and the grass.’ and the ratios series. on all of these records, wordcolour’s ability to create detailed, immersive soundscapes which emotionally resonated with both home listening and dancefloor moments, has shined through. continuing on this path of world building, earlier this month wordcolour released the first ep on his new label, TiHKAL, from london-based artist st. amp. a label dedicated to exploring psychedelic soundscapes which is a direction that wordcolour has been producing in recently as well as ties in with the parties he now likes to attend, TiHKAL will be a new home for tracks that land within the 150-200 / 75-100 bpm zone.

to celebrate the release, wordcolour has pulled together a mix that delves into the influences behind this new direction and we chat more about the concept of TiHKAL, approach to curation, early influences and more.

rainmaker heads up the artificio imprint alongside pasq who we featured on 909 a few weeks ago. the pair came together to release a joint ep towards the end of last year and have been busy working away on the 2025 plans for the label with both artists giving their best ‘big things coming soon’ teaser within the accompanying interview answers. we’re super excited to see where they’re heading and this latest mix from rainmaker shows that he’s ready to command the dancefloors on a global scale with an eu tour firmly planted on his current vision board.

a pure artistic statement signifying a new chapter for the medellín-based producer pasq who welcomes a new name and direction. 

previously working under the alias arcane prospect, pasq dropped the moniker towards the end of last year following a period of reflection on his art, not being fully happy with his output so far. this new name has allowed pasq to explore new possibilities, experiment more with his sound and enters the chat with fresh excitement. alongside his work as a dj and producer, pasq runs the label artificio alongside rainmaker which they launched in 2020 and have since released records from the likes of erre ye, noise casino, rasgar, Æon series, and rachiid paralyzing as well as records from themselves including the recent double-header a fuego y a fondo. 

to tie in with their weighty joint ep release, pasq discusses the motivation behind the new name, running artificio, his recent ep with rainmaker and his early relationship with music.

5rvz first caught our attention when he released the trench ep on our fave’s kinetic label ~ a deeply experimental release which leans into our love for half time murky goodness whilst drawing from hip-hop & 5rvz’s sikh and panjabi heritage. there’s also the screwed & chopped mix 5rvz did for kinetic’s mix series to celebrate the release where he draws from the sub-genre of hip hop created by dj screw using the remix technique of slowing the track down to create a unique sound. in that mix, 5rvz used the technique to bring down his signature 170 approach to a more laid-back 100bpm. so we’re super excited to have 5rvz on 909 this week with another dark & introspective session ~ lock in!

new york-based dj and promoter como se dj comes through with a live recording from a recent recess party in montreal. with the theme being swamp fairies and como se dj closing for one of our favourites, the mix transcends between dark and light, using beautiful textural melodies to bring you into his world. 

growing up in a household that was always playing music with como se dj’s dad introducing him to a world of different soundscapes, it wasn’t until the last two years of high school that como se dj (paul) was introduced to electronic music via the all encompassing sounds of brian eno, aphex twin, portishead and massive attack. opening up the flood gates for paul, he then got into the renegade scene in montreal which is where the influence of djing came into play. now based in brooklyn, paul runs the diy sunday party series recess which was launched in response to the frequent high energy parties in new york with the aim of creating something more nourishing and softer for the queer community in the city. the previous parties have featured sets from deep creep, loif, adobeprincess, ronan, matas, kia, d. tiffany, adab, succubass, aaron j, rrao and more. 

with plans to play in the eu and moving back to montreal in the fall for studies, como se dj is soaking up the rest of his time in nyc. we caught up with paul to chat about all things recess and new york city influence, what it was like growing up in a musical household, other inspirations outside of music, and what he’s most excited about right now.

Beatrice M.'s Bait invites Trois-Quarts Taxi System back into the fold for both the artist’s and label’s debut album release, ‘Plexus’. Leaning into innovative 140 mutations, Trois-Quarts Taxi System dedicates his first long-format release to exploring the depth of this space and stepping away from his usual 170/80 sound. A deep meditative journey of introspection.

Taking the name ‘Plexus’ from a key he found in the street, the album is split into various parts with the heart of album comprised of three parts of ‘Plexus’ - drone-like soundscapes which retrace different states using a variety of acoustic and electronic sounds combined with samples from an anonymous cassette found in the street. This hybridisation of sound is often influenced by ideas Trois-Quarts Taxi System comes across whilst working on his live shows; an artistic practice that is very important to his output.

A psy-fi power hour from one of Australia’s most exciting artists, LOIF. 

Based in Naarm/Melbourne, LOIF made his production debut in late 2019 with the release of ‘Electronic Organism’ and has since landed on a broad selection of record labels such as Animalia, Ute.Rec, Amniote Editions, INDEX Records and Pressure Dome. Most recently, LOIF released his new album ‘GHOSTWORLD’ on Steeplejack. A project that was five years in the making, featuring collaborations with sina, bluhol, and Nū, ‘GHOSTWORLD’ shows the full breadth of LOIF’s ability to build these immersive worlds, journeying through impeccable sound design and psy-influenced soundscapes whilst accomplishing the balancing act of drawing inspiration from both the natural and the digital. Some stand out moments include the deeply emotive, melancholic tone of ‘As Above, So Below’ featuring sina to the tunnelling, skittering energy of ‘Ektoplazm’. On the album, LOIF has created a world that is so distinctively his sonically that lends itself to his live and DJ sets - a couple of the tracks on there are expansions from a live set LOIF had been working on. Whilst LOIF prefers to play outdoors and is deeply influenced by the nature he is surrounded by in Australia with the DIY park parties and bush doofs, over the last few years, LOIF has made a global leap with performances at Persona, Dekmantel Selectors, Dripping, Ohm, Osmosis, Fata Morgana and Recess (in NYC, which is run by como se DJ, who we featured last week), with plans to return to Asia and Europe in the coming months.

a special live recording from benk0’s set at dj wiggles’ kinetic party last month - playing alongside upsammy, cersy and dj wiggles. a set with no compromises, benk0 took the opportunity to showcase where he is sonically at the moment whilst carefully playing with tension and mood, bridging together swampy and subterranean rhythms with dreamy dubby moments, enveloping the dancefloor with a sweet swirling soundscape. 

this is the second chapter of benk0’s journey on 909 as we featured the south london dj on the site a few years ago. becoming a go to in the local london circuit, like one of the city’s hidden gems, you’ll be able to catch him at this year’s edition of transmissions festival later in the summer.

andy has such a distinctive sound, it’s so easy to recognise one of his tracks in a mix as he bridges together his mexican and jamaican roots through a futuristic style that spans across techno and dub leaning towards rich textural influences. it’s honestly quite hard for me to go a mix or radio show without including one of his andy’s tracks. his output is strong with his first release out in 2009 and has been steady ever since! whether that’s self-released, via his imprint mole audio, that he runs alongside didier dlb and where you’ll find collaborations with lee scratch perry and gavsborg, via labels such as ssensorial and discos movimiento or his ambient works which have led to andy performing in musuems, art galleries and festivals like mutek. there’s a touch of andy martin in every corner.

konalgad is the new alias by ahmad qatramiz who is better known for his alias quatri. when looking at the story behind the word konalgad in arabic, it means: the universe of tomorrow, referring to a constructive, enchanting, yet light and floating ascent.these are all themes and ideas that relate to konalgad’s work as he leans towards the healing low end frequencies and vibrations. this is shown in full through his latest album, ‘club dream’, which was released last month via new york’s dance data label. the album ebbs and flows like a mix, seamlessly flowing through konalgad’s influences whilst ‘the record imparts it’s own kind of dance floor dream logic onto the listener, inviting us to let go of making sense of things and trust in its fuzzy logic.’

minù jr is deeply embedded within the music scene in lyon. from being a resident of the collective and record label monochrome as well as ouroboros festival - two key outputs of the city’s low end psychedelia scene. as a producer, minù jr’s sound is nestled nicely within the slow/fast side of psychedelic music as he creates these deeply rhythmic wormholes to get lost in that are filled with dub and drum & bass influences such as the qabam ep on monochrome ~ a release i can’t get enough of. super inspired by his output and this movement that’s happening in lyon, i’m excited to have minù jr on the 909 series this week :)

Australian producer Assembler Code returns with his first EP on Censor Music, ‘Generator’. With previous realises on CPU, Cultivated Electronics, Boysnoize, Dance Trax and more, Assembler Code brings his timely signature dystopian sound to the imprint. 

With the exclusive on the razor-sharp titled track, Assembler Code says, “one tie between AC and Censor is a strong involvement in sound system culture and the free party movement in the UK and Australia respectively. This track is an ode to the giver of life and the power behind the music at any gathering thrown off the grid - mechanical, pounding and a taste of exhaust in the air; the generator."

Berlin-based artist, label founder, and promoter Marlon Hoffstadt is back after the brilliant release of his debut album ‘Planet Love’. Exploring Trance and Eurodance both musically and also philosophically, ‘Planet Love’ felt perfectly timed as its joyous melodies and spoken proverbs such as “take care, give love, because only love will set you free” allowed for a moment of positivity and hope. 

Providing more good feelings, Marlon’s next release ‘Hands In The Air Eurodance’ is dedicated to all those hands-in-the-air moments we’re going to miss this summer, with the EP encouraging you to explore those moments in “your living room or under the shower” instead. Being released on the 29th May under the new moniker DJ Daddy Trance, the first single on the EP ‘Lost In Trancelation’ is a rich, colourful track with a dazzling melody and evocative synths.

Breaker Breaker label boss Haider makes his welcomed return with ‘Endless Clouds’ EP. Previously making his name through his achievements as a label owner, party promoter and discovering talent such as Ross From Friends and The Colours That Rise, it’s time for Haider to step to the forefront with his incredible sleek productions. 

Releasing the first EP under his own name in 2018 on Breaker Breaker, Haider made his debut on Aus Music last year with ‘10961’. Now with ‘Endless Clouds’, Haider continues to showcase his dynamic production ability, drawing inspiration for his surrounding environment. With his ever-evolving sound, the latest project spans across Miami bass, aquatic grooves of Drexicya, 90s house and luscious electro beats on today’s single ‘Maracuja’. 

‘Endless Clouds’ will be released on the 31st July via Breaker Breaker.

IMOGEN returns to Sunil Sharpe’s Earwiggle imprint, this time with Ben Pest for their first full release together, ‘Volts’, out today. Over the four tracks, the pair showcase their diverse style as crossover the realms of raw techno and UK hardcore, channeling volcanic energy. ‘Shibooty’ is a perky take on Chi-town techno with cartoonish vocal sequences, humming bass and elevated funk levels. It’s a groover!

IMOGEN is a resident at NTS and fabric and has previously released on femme culture, HE.SHE.THEY, Lobster Theremin amongst others. Bristol-based artist Ben Pest has collaborated with Radioactive Man, made appearances on Off Me Nut, Riot Radio Records, and Asking For Trouble and released under the OverworX moniker.
