There is nothing safe about @dis_fig. The Berlin-based artist makes confrontational, unconventional music that harnesses the power of chaos. She initially came up on the New York club scene but was always most interested in the weirder end of the spectrum so moved to Berlin. It is there that she has established herself as someone who operates on the fringes of the dance floor. Her debut album PURGE in 2019 was wrought with emotional turmoil thanks to her own unique vocal work, while the electronics were just as twisted and harrowing. Last year she showed another side to her vocal skills on In Blue, a collaborative album of bass-heavy dreamscapes with The Bug.

This week's mix is 90 minutes of fulsome body music, contorting rhythms and exaggerated percussion. The boundaries between club, techno, jungle, rap and bass are blurred as Dis Fig plots a route through them all with great control. Even when tempos jump around wildly, there is no break in the flow, and to end such a high octane ride on the sultry mind nineties r&b of Total is a stroke of genius.

This week’s 909 mix has been in the works for a while now. We’re gassed to have Colombian producer and DJ Bitter Babe contribute to the series. 

Based in Miami, Bitter Babe has been pushing for Latinx representation in the electronic music scene for the last 9 years. She is a member of ECO, a Colombian platform that promotes the self-management and interdependence of national and regional electronic ecosystems and a member of Latitudes - a space that aims to amplify labels, collectives and artists from the Latin American electronic music scene. Bitter Babe also made her production debut last year on one of our favourite labels, TraTraTrax, alongside her partner in crime Nick León who you have most likely seen featured on the site before. The EP included a futuristic remix from Simo Cell - an absolutely lethal combo of artists. 

Instantly gravitating towards her online mixes (as we still haven’t had the pleasure of her seeing her live yet *sad*), Bitter Babe always keeps you on your toes. Seamlessly weaving through different genres and innovative club music, each set is a lesson, inviting you to learn about the forward-thinking music coming out of LatAm whilst bridging them together with international influences. Her sets are filled with excitement as the powerful percussions and juxtaposing rhythms ripple throughout. We’re juiced up and ready to go! ❤️‍🔥

Last year, TSVI and object blue released Hyperaesthesia’ on Nervous Horizon, described by the pair as “body music”, meshing together object blue’s widescreen, experimental club tones and TSVI’s borderless percussive styles. We loved the EP so couldn’t resist inviting them to play an extended b2b set at Unsound this year, and now we can’t resist releasing the recording as part of our podcast series.
TSVI and object blue played to a packed room from 1am onward, moving at a frantic, skittering pace through a diverse range of tracks and genres, with percussive elements threaded throughout. “One of the best sets we've played, solo or together,” says object blue. “There was so much mutual love between us and the dancers, it felt intimate despite the massive crowd.”

Nick León is part of a newer generation of Miami producers who infuse modern-day club music with sounds from around the region, everything from Miami bass to reggaeton. In León's case, his most recent—and most exciting—music has focused on beats inspired by reggaeton and its sub-genre perreo, but with a musical palette that speaks to a love of electronic music from Aphex Twin to Burial to music on labels like NAAFI and TraTraTrax. (This is a predilection he shares with DJ Python, whom León just launched a new party with.) 

It's on the latter label he released the Rompediscoteka EP, one of the canniest genre fusions he's done yet, meant to hark back to the feeling he had when he first discovered reggaeton. (It came with eye-opening remixes from Maral, Kelman Duran and Henzo, producers whose personal-but-global approach mirrors León's own.) He also head a head-turning EP on Future Times, which threw Miami-style electro into the mix, with an ambient touch.

Like his productions, the young Miami DJ's sets can range from slow and low to high and tight, and his RA Podcast captures León in peak-time mode. It's a Latin-spin on everything from techno to tech house to cool-kid club music, with selections from Nico, Simisea, Siete Catorce, Ricardo Villalobos and MM adding up to a vibrant and rhythmically restless hour that soars across genres and scenes.
