We turn over our airwaves to feature archival broadcasts from XX Files Radio, from Montreal's Studio XX. Today we will air One Year Mix, a mix to celebrate 1 year with Montreal-based internet radio station n10.as This mix was recorded live by hosts Julia Dyck and Amanda Harvey, featuring experimental, electronic compositions.

Founded in 1996, Studio XX is a bilingual feminist artist-run centre that supports technological experimentation, creation and critical reflection in media arts. XX assists in the independent production and diffusion of art created by artists who identify as women, queer, trans, and gender fluid in the field of contemporary technological practices. Demystifying, providing access, equipping, questioning and creating, these are the aims of Studio XX. The centre actively participates in the development of a digital democracy that encourages autonomy and collaboration.

The XX Files is the Studio’s aural-satellite, a weekly radio show exploring all aspects of our techno-world from the perspective of women, queer and non-binary people living it. Started by Deborah VanSlet and Kathy Kennedy, The XX Files first aired in 1996, a few months later, in 1997, Valérie d. Walker joined & has led the show for over 16 years along with co-hosts Anita Cotic, Bérengère Marin-Dubuard. In 2010, Val TeQiiGaL welcomed Britt Wray and then in 2011, Ma*az: co-hosts Maia Iotzova and Maya Richman . And in 2014, the XX Files welcomed a whole new generation of bilingual women to the airwaves for our collective aural illumination! Stéphanie Dufresne, aka Fanie de la Fresne, Amanda-É. Clément and Nnedimma Nnebe, aka The Urban Dweller, added to the diverse vanguard of innovative pioneering spoken word power of The XX Files Radio Show!

Today we broadcast two works by Claire Wilson, a sculptor whose works speak for themselves.

Awkward Nocturnes, Act II  

Robotic anthropologists, hailing from Elsewhere, have landed on our planet in the pursuit of truth, meaning, and souvenirs. Programmed to study the nuances of mankind, they have carefully collected choice artifacts, studied our methods of communication, and investigated our ways of inhabiting the world. Throughout a three-year term of field work and research, our new friends are ready to return home. Before they leave, however, they would like to share their discoveries about our species. This research has been compiled into what they are calling a Nocturne, divided into three "acts".

Robot Sculptures from Elsewhere ft. Rachmaninoff 

Performed 91 years apart at the Stock Pavilion in Madison, WI, this track is a remix of sounds produced by Claire Wilson's musical robotic sculptures (2018), and a musical performance by Sergei Rachmaninoff (1927). At the age of 8, Claire was listening to Rachmaninoff's piano concertos on the radio when she decided to make a life-long commitment to being an artist. The sounds from each performance have been chopped and woven together, as a synthesis of adoration, mimicry, and time travel. 

Claire Wilson was born in Portland, Oregon. She graduated from the University of Utah in 2012 with a BFA, where she studied Art and Anthropology, and graduated with an MFA from the University of Wisconsin – Madison, in 2018. She is currently living and working in Pittsburgh, PA.

Guggenheim’s Associate Curator of Chinese Art, Xiaoyu Weng, leads a panel that invites local curators to speak about their collaborative work with artists whose practice critically reflects on our perception, definition, misconception and misunderstanding on Asia, its relationship with the Bay Area and the rest of the world. Here “Geography” is an imaginative tool to test the boundary of our own intellectual and emotional limitations.
