The Wicked Takeover on WRAPfm Ep036 Large Professor 90's Productions Tribute (08-19-2022)

In 1998 the divide within the rap game was at its most glaring. On one side of the stage stood the jiggy, “shiny suit era” mainstream rappers, with CD sales on their mind, expensive tastes, and a penchant for fly cars, clothes, money, cash and hoes. At the other end of the stage was the underground, “backpack”, independent scene, where rappers and crews still made time for college radio, performed small venue shows, and aimed more for putting out records on vinyl  than for selling CDs in stores. A strange state of affairs was that this was a year where the dichotomy of Hip Hop was at its furthest split. And then an album dropped and something happened. The deep chasm between the mainstream and the underground was filled, but not by much.

Yesterday marked the fourteenth anniversary of Black Star’s debut album. It was a higly anticipated release celebrated and critically acclaimed album immediately from the moment it dropped. It gave a celebrity face to the indy movement that was going on, and did it’s best to bridge the gaps between the polar-opposite movements that were co-existing inside of Hip Hop’s genre. Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star, was the second full-length album on Rawkus Records and was the epicenter for the NYC underground movement.

Last week the good folks at Complex tackled another famous list by profiling 50 Best Rawkus Records Songs. Inspired by the idea honor Mos and Kweli’s epic release, and the label that birthed it, we figured it was our turn to pay respects as well. Sticking more to Rawkus released vinyls, which was the essence of the movement, we put together a list of 14 of the dopest B-Sides from Rawkus records.

Irish duo Fish Go Deep are Greg Dowling and Shane Johnson and should need little introduction to deep house heads. They have been releasing music under this moniker since 1997 on a diverse & influential roster of labels including Innervisions, i Records, Chez Music, Large Music, Local Talk, Seasons, Gourmet, Brique Rouge and their own imprints Go Deep & Ork Recordings.

In 2006 they reached number 1 on both the UK dance and indie charts with ‘The Cure & The Cause’ featuring Tracey K. The original and Dennis Ferrer mixes are firmly enshrined as house music anthems from that decade. Since then the pair have released more than two dozen EPs on their own imprints and other labels, and have remixed a wide variety of house luminaries including Kerri Chandler, Alton Miller, Audio Soul Project, Charles Webster, Jamie Anderson feat. K-Alexi and many others. They first appeared on Nordic Trax remixing ‘Divine in You’ from fellow Irish producer Gavin Boyce in 2012.

The pair have hosted a residency for over 2 decades at their infamous Sweat & Go Deep parties in hometown Cork, where they've honed their skills alongside a who's who of guests, including Laurent Garnier, DJ Deep, Roger Sanchez and Gemini to name a few. You can catch them most weekends at home and abroad doing what they do best: bringing people together on the dancefloor.

DJ Linus joins Nordic Trax with the Oxygen EP. The legendary Munich producer and dj steps up with a three- track ep of deep, techy house jams for the discerning listener. Subtle hooks with first class production are layered over snapping beats to deliver a driving ep aimed straight at the dancefloor.
Our good friend Linus has been a dj since the ‘80s and started releasing his own productions in the mid-‘90s. After beginning with a string of stand-out releases on the Compose imprint from Compost, he went on to run his own labels Exun (‘99 to ‘09) and subsequently Sujet Musique, which he still runs to this day. He’s also had releases on Get Physical, Gigolo, Loudeast, Go Deeva and Brique Rouge to name a few.
With upwards of one hundred releases and countless remixes, Linus has built a loyal following among the underground faithful. And while it’s hard to highlight one release from his discography, there are a couple that stand above. The 1996 track KB’s Groove (Compose) is notably a favourite of the one & only Danny Tenaglia; and 2001’s Who Stole The Soul (Exun) was a massive hit with worldwide support that spawned several remixes and re-issues. Both are on regular rotation these days as a new generation discover the quality & depth of the ‘90s true innovators – DJ Linus being one.
DJ Linus is a resident at Pacha in Munich, where he has been for 16 years – some run in the club scene! As well as holding it down at the iconic Palais afterhours, he has toured the globe with stops at Fabric, Sub Club, Cocoon and Ministry of Sound along the way. Outside the club can find him teaching production and deejaying at Germany’s biggest school for electronic music.

As we kick off 2020 and a new decade of music, our old friend Pete Moss returns to the label on a fresh collaboration with producer Onur Özman. The three-track ep is driven by the outstanding title track – an uplifting deep tech journey with a deadly vocal hook.

Fans of the label will no doubt be familiar with Pete Moss. The Philadelphia deep house don has been producing quality underground music for over two decades, with releases on Ovum, Dessous, Alola, Recline, Kwench, Worship and of course a pair of excellent eps on Nordic Trax (NT045 & NT053). In 2019 his remix of Colette's "Dreams" topped the dj charts and was a massive hit from Berlin to Burning Man. 

Onur Özman’s unique sound is a combination of music and architecture. His music creates soundscapes with atmosphere and function, as he says "with feelings & dance". He has been producing, performing and presenting deep, tech house music worldwide for more than a decade. His diverse discography includes releases for the likes of Noir Music, Rebirth, iRecords and forthcoming on the legendary Yoshitoshi.

Besides his own productions, Onur has collaborated with many renowned artists such as Kyodai, HotSince82, Cari Golden, Kevin Over, Cari Golden, Lazarusman & now Pete Moss. Onur rose originally from the Istanbul house music scene, but is now based in Switzerland.

Demarkus Lewis returns to Nordic Trax with a blazing three-track ep of his signature deep house. In his third outing on the label, the Dallas producer pulls no punches delivering an emotional release of underground goodness. 

The three track Emotional Landslide EP features two mixes of the title track; an uplifting groover built around a swinging hook and Demarkus’ airtight drum programming. Amen Buddah follows a driving kick and his signature beats that falls somewhere in between tech house & garage, quite refreshing. 

He’s been called "the hardest working man in House" and in 2014 Demarkus Lewis was the #1 Jackin' House Artist on Traxsource. But the term ‘jackin’ doesn’t really do his style justice. The versatile producer is equally known for his deep & soulful excursions, including his stand-out collaboration with vocalist Martha Wash ‘Look To The Light’.
