Uprite Dub Orchestra Reunites

“We’re getting the band back together, we’re on a mission from Jah!” exclaimed Brandon Huston, one of Uprite Dub’s founders, when recently asked about the upcoming reunion event set for Friday, January 1st at The Secret Society on 116 NE Russell St. If you went to a Reggae or Ska show back in the mid-aughts, or we’re a fan of Portland’s powerhouse Reggae and Ska Rockers, than you are no stranger to the vibes laid down by some of the area’s best musicians. Inspired by 60s and 70s Jamaican music and culture, the same that brought us The Skatalites, Augustus Pablo, the seminal movie “Rockers” and dub music which laid the foundations for Hip-Hop and EDM, Uprite dub provides a soundscape that attempts to encompass it all.

Formed in 2001 and sharing such humble beginnings as sharing a Tuesday night weekly Hip-Hop event at the then ‘Mt. Tabor Theater’ in southeast, the same that introduced Portland to Olivia (Liv) Warfield. They eventually straddled the West Coast with tours, released an album recorded live in Portland in 2004 entitled ‘Dubrite’. And then in 2008, they scattered across the West Coast playing their last formal show on March 8th, 2008. Both now, after this hiatus, the forces have aligned for all former members to reunite for one big bashment for the enjoyment of Portlanders new and roots.

Triangulated between San Francisco, Spokane and Honolulu, the members of Uprite Dub Orchestra have been keeping themselves committed to their own music careers. Brandon Hutson (Trombone, Keys, Melodica, Big Toe on a Koass Pad) moved to Honolulu in 2008 and joined such acts as Go Jimmy Go, Natural Vibrations, Mike Love and his own band, Sound Revolutionaries. While Co-founder Ryan Bley (Bass, Vocals) joined Eugene’s reggae backing band The Escort Service and southern Oregon’s starchile, Alcyon Massive. Taylor Aglipay (Tenor Saxophone) has been a fixture in Portland’s own March Fourth on Baritone Saxophone and Guitar, he left for his hometown of Weaverville, CA to pursue his own music with his folk punk band, 4 Pounds of Lightning. And while Russell Scott (Trumpet, Tenor Sax and Keyboards) did his time in March Fourth, he has found his own direction as future-vintage groove-blasting maestro, Russ Liquid, recently touring with Gramatik and the Floozies and releasing albums on 1320 Records (STS9) and Lowtemp (Gramatik). Guest MC, Mexichron, along with Tanasa (Drums) formed Conscious Revolutionary Rap group, Collective Elements in 2009. The remaining members have been doing life, playing in local bands, waiting for the day we could all come together again.

The show will be opened by DJ Cansaman (Cansaman) who has also been absent from the local scene until recently, but was a regular fixture at local Uprite Dub shows. Promoting the show is KBOO’s own Ras Danny through his own production company, Just Some Reggae Folk and hosted the band live on air for some of their first performances.
