I started listening to ambient music properly during lockdown as a way of trying to heal from heartbreak as well as a coping mechanism to deal with what was going on around the world. I was pulling together playlists of tracks that made my heart sing or weep, to soundtrack my daily walks around the canals of berlin or the quiet residential area where i grew up and ended up moving back to. These playlists were the start of the sounds of healing series and my journey of digging deeper into ambient soundscapes via my refuge worldwide residency. It’s a genre that I probably would say I have the biggest emotional connection to right now, in the way that it has helped me through some really difficult times in the last four years. So it was an honour to bring this to the club space for the first time for playbody 002, a party run by some of my wonderful  friends. Sounds of healing vol. 5 is a glimpse of what I played during that after hours set, in what became one of the most beautiful settings with the lights dimmed, a candlelight by the decks, people curled up with each other on various platforms, kissing, or deep in conversation. It was touching to witness people have the same emotional reaction to the music as me; people coming up and saying how a track or artist had saved their life or that they just wanted to have this personal moment with the music, away from the conversation. It was deeply vulnerable to play some of these tracks to a group of people, some being strangers but it very much aligns with the journey I’ve been on recently. And with this mix, I’m not only sharing that moment with you but I’m bottling up this feeling and keeping it close to me forever.

After growing up on the renegade scene of Montreal, Paul (alias como se DJ) moved to Brooklyn and founded the DIY party series RECESS with the intention of bringing a psy-forward sound he felt was missing in New York City. Inspired by forest raves and experimental dance music, he dreamt up his party with the desire to conjure the feeling of dancing in open nature with your friends. como se DJ’s sets strikes a balance of body- and heart-activating psychedelia. At once mischievous and emotional, he pulls in sonic elements of bass, deep techno, prog and electro, flirting with genre and groove, while maintaining a lush, blissed-out undercurrent. But this mix features a different sound for him: tender, melancholic, analeptic ambience.

1. How/why did you get into DJing?

I learned to DJ during COVID lockdown. I was living in Montreal, and I just had acquired my friend’s beaten up DDJ-400. I’d just moved into this new apartment where I’d host these ridiculous dinner parties with my “COVID bubble” of about 30 of my friends. Three or four days a week, I’d have everyone over for some truly insane meal, followed immediately by a house party. The handful of us who were beginner DJs would clang out some tunes and we’d all dance around til sunrise or until we got bored and then we’d do it all again <48 hours later. We all started out at varying levels of DJ adeptness, but through these dinner parties and occasional group DJ sessions, we all helped each other get better. It was beautiful; extremely surreal, but it worked wonders. 

2. What was the coziest gig you've been to/experienced and why?

Earlier this summer, I went back to Montreal to play this renegade party called Layer 05. That crew had been doing a bi-monthly party in the open at this wicked location in Longueuil, across the water looking into the city. It took place in this secluded forested spot right on the water, the dancefloor was a clearing in the woods, and you’d turn around and be staring at this old amusement park called La Ronde with the lights from the rides and from the city reflecting on the St. Lawrence River. After my set, two of my fav Aussies, LOIF and Sina, played some extremely wooky psychedelia (in proper Australian form) through the night into sunrise. It was my first time playing to a big crowd in the woods, and the vibes were perfection all night – it felt like a night at a festival: deeply joyous, intimate, and serene. 

3. Do you consider yourself an introvert/extrovert in the scene?

Without a doubt, I’d say I’m an extrovert in the scene. I always related to others over music. The kinds of music you are drawn to says a lot about you and your values. I go through phases of being obsessed with certain sounds/genres/DJs, and I’m endlessly curious and determined to meet others who happen to share my particular musical affinities as they change and grow with my taste. 

4. If you had to choose 1 track to vibe out to forever, what would it be?

I’d have to go with “Swim” by Madonna, produced by William Orbit in his idiosyncratic triphoppy, dreamy, and deep style. It’s a masterpiece and – in my opinion – far too underrated. It’s groovy, sultry, and a bit darker for Madonna than her usual sound. (Honorable mentions: Protection, by Tracey Thorn & Massive Attack; The One to Wait, by CCFX; We Float, by PJ Harvey.)

5. What is your routine when preparing for a gig? Do you have any special remedies/mental/physical prep?

It’s gig-dependent, but I like to spend the day before the gig alone, listening through sets of the other artists on the bill. I like to get a sense of their sound and use that to figure out how my set / timeslot will fit into the flow of the evening. I like to arrive on the earlier side to see how the night unfolds, and so I get a sense of the crowd and what they’re vibing with. I’m very conscious of the progression of a party and I want to make sure I play something that feels event-appropriate, while taking things in unexpected directions.

For the 387th edition of the IA MIX Series, we are beyond excited to invite London-based ambient and experimental producer @box_5ive to deliver the goods.

With a productive year culminating in the release of his debut album 'Grey Space' via co:clear, a sparse, ambient tinged bass record that blew our minds and remains one of our favourite full lengths of the year. With that record and scattered tracks for the likes of Well Street and Comic Sans, Box5ive is a burgeoning name in the ever expansive and adventurous world of UK bass, grime, and dubstep.

Box5ive's mix explores contemporary independent club tracks, providing a glimpse at his peak time prowess from the comfort of your headphones. There are hints of his bass and dubstep influences, but it's woven in between prime dance fodder that works perfectly under strobe lights as the night morphs into the morning .

In addition to his stellar mix, Box5ive graciously answered our questions to shed light on his musical influences and beginnings, current studio set up, and a look at some of his favourite London clubs. ‎

Giuliano Rodrigues is a renowned Brazilian DJ and music producer, widely recognized for his significant contributions to the Dub Techno genre. Born with an innate passion for music, Giuliano channeled his talent and creativity to craft a unique and captivating sound that deeply resonates with genre enthusiasts.

In 2012, Giuliano founded his first digital label, **Flowing Movement Music**. Through this label, he not only promoted his own music but also elevated the profile of numerous other artists within the genre. His commitment to sonic excellence and dedication to cultivating a vibrant community of Dub Techno producers and fans have solidified his position as a central figure in the music scene.

In 2020, amid the pandemic, he launched **DUBGIU**, followed by **Afterdub** in 2023 and **DUBLUCID** in 2024—all focused on deep tech, deep house, minimal, and, of course, Dub Techno.

Giuliano has also released tracks on **Lucidflow**, a label founded by Nadja Lind and Helmut Ebritsch, also known as Klartraum. The duo has produced remixes of Giuliano’s tracks, showcasing mutual respect and collaboration within the Dub Techno community. Two of Giuliano’s songs were even played at the iconic **Burning Man** festival. Giuliano also had the opportunity to remix Klartraum's track *"Manifestation"*, which has garnered over 60,000 plays on Spotify.

Additionally, Giuliano was featured on the popular YouTube channel **GENTLEMAN**, which boasts over 400,000 subscribers. In a dedicated video, GENTLEMAN selected ten tracks released by Giuliano under DUBGIU and created a one-hour set featuring his music. The channel also added two of his tracks to its top Spotify playlists.

Giuliano’s music portfolio extends to **Superordinate Dub Waves**, founded by Nae:Tek. He has collaborated with Nae:Tek on several tracks, demonstrating his versatility and ability to synergize with other artists. Most recently, Giuliano released new music on **Piranha Siberia Dub**, continuing to contribute fresh and innovative sounds to the Dub Techno scene.

Through these platforms and collaborations, Giuliano Rodrigues continues to solidify his reputation as a prolific and influential figure in Dub Techno, constantly pushing the genre's boundaries and connecting with a global audience.

Currently, with countless remixes, singles, compilations, and his entire body of work focused on Dub Techno, Giuliano has centralized all his releases under one label: **DUBLUCID**.
