I had absolutely no idea how this project would turn out when I started it almost 1 year ago. 

Fluctuations is the portrait of my inability to express and develop consistent musical ideas. Today, I feel super liberated to have been able to take, more or less consciously, the decision to embrace this "handicap" and live with it.

At last, after a few directionless years, I'm finally back with new music! I participated in the remix competition for Stasys' song "Serenade," and this is what I came up with.

The intro was initially very different, going straight into a minimal drum rhythm, though I eventually realized it wouldn't work. When I searched the stems for alternative ideas, the background lead that plays during the original's "drop" immediately stood out to me, and it inspired the cinematic intro and progression you can hear now. Working with the melodic material from Serenade was an interesting challenge, since I don't typically write in this melodic style. The last third of the first drop is probably one of my favorite parts of this remix, as it features a bit of chromatic movement.

Most of my bass design is pretty simple, since I habitually only use init sine and saw waves for some reason... 🙃

In the second drop, I experimented with some 5/16 rhythms, which I'm surprised I haven't ever heard anywhere else before (at least to my knowledge lol). This is also probably the first time I've pulled off what I consider "proper" DnB, strongly utilizing 16th-note ticking percussion and even stabbing basses.

When writing the lyrics, I wanted to expand on Stasys' idea of these "pilgrims" discovering this new land, and possibly asking themselves why they traveled here. I intended to write a more substantial set of lyrics, but I unfortunately couldn't since the contest's deadline was becoming tighter and tighter. I actually finished this remix during a vacation quite far from my home state, and I took my Mac and even my microphone to finish recording the lyrics in my hotel rooms. I'm still surprised I managed to pull through with my remix and finish it despite my circumstances.
