Released today, lucky album 13 from the lo-fi peddlers has been hailed by Uncut magazine as a “sleek return of droll social commentary and DIY invention”, whilst The Quietus urged  “the ghost of Mark E. Smith to crown them the kings of the sprechgesang gang.” Wow! We’re celebrating the release of the album today by sharing the song ‘Twibbon Wife’, a track musing on the legacy of The Stone Roses, Ellis-Bextor and armchair occultists.

When Earth Ball fire up the amps in their basement you can hear the voices of ghosts hum through the speakers. Kellan's hued feedback, Izzy's sturdy basslines, Jer's paperbag guitar tone and rumble pack zaps, Liam's sheets of sound and Brennen's multidirectional drums are expansive, restlessly inventive and truly psychedelic. Earth Ball - 'A Need To Cool Down'

Green shoots have burst forth from Parsnip! The Australian group have a super-catchy single out today called ‘Turn to Love’, taken from their sophisticated sophomore album ‘Behold’. Drawing comparisons with Dolly Mixture, Sara Goes Pop and Look Blue Go Purple, Parsnip are an animated ensemble, full of life, emotional complexity and humour. On ‘Behold’ they explore both the inner and outer realms of consciousness with quick wits and some seriously quality jangle and jolt.

‘Your Move’ is the first taster from Nottingham duo RATTLE’s forthcoming third album Encircle (coming Feb 28th 2025, Upset The Rhythm), and sees the duo expand their unique experiments in rhythm, metre and tension. 

‘Your Move’ is mesmeric and boundless, hypnotic in its minimalism of double-drums and the often wordless almost tribal vocals of RATTLE’s Katharine Eira Brown.  

“The images in my head for the first half of ‘Your Move’ were water - reflecting in pools, and flowing” explains Katharine. “Then the second half is like it is stuck in an endless slow-moving cycle. The bit in-between is the flitting in-between, we wanted it to feel like a CD getting stuck. The words Your Move might be about moving in an embodied way or freedom / movement / expression, but they are also an emboldening call to action - it's your turn - what are YOU going to do, what's your next move? "

“Half Heart Necklace” is the new single to be taken from Allo Darlin’s latest album We Come From the Same Place (out now on Fortuna POP!). The third full-length recording from the much loved Anglo-Australian four-piece is made up of smart, beautiful pop music, with lyrics that resonate with experience and melodies that chime, echo and soar.

Unusually for Allo Darlin', "Half Heart Necklace" is written from someone else’s perspective, a rare occurance among songwriter Elizabeth Morris' catalogue of intimate, heart-wrenching songs, and taps into a dark story from her youth in a small Australian town. As she explains; “This is a song written from the point of view of a girl from my home town who did quite a strange thing when I was growing up. There had been some murders, and this girl who was my age was missing and presumed killed. It turned out she had been hiding for years in her boyfriend´s cupboard, and she was charged for wasting police time and there was a big brouhaha. Half Heart Necklace is a Twin Peaks thing. Sometimes I think my hometown is like Twin Peaks in more ways than one.”

Allo Darlin’ were formed after Australian Elizabeth Morris arrived in London and bought a ukulele from the Duke of Uke shop in Shoreditch. She began writing music and was soon joined by fellow Australian Bill Botting (bass), Paul Rains (guitar), and Michael Collins (drums). Their debut album attracted many plaudits including being named No. 2 record of the year by online retailer eMusic, and a glowing 1,200 word essay by Robert Forster of The Go-Betweens in the Australian critical magazine, The Monthly. Their second album "Europe" scored 8.1 on Pitchfork, was made USA Today’s Album Of The Week, and garnered praise from Uncut, Q, NME, The Quietus and The Guardian. It was also named Rough Trade Shop’s Album Of The Month, where it went on to become the biggest selling album of the year. The band have been playlisted at BBC 6Music and have recorded sessions for Lauren Laverne, Marc Riley and John Kennedy (XFM), as well being Steve Lamacq’s personal pick for BBC Introducing. Their releases to date, along with their joyous and effervescent live shows, have seen them build an intensely loyal and ever-increasing fanbase.

The new album combines the eagerness, urgency and immediacy of their 2010 self-titled debut with the contemplation, sophistication and ambition of their 2012 follow-up "Europe," and yet it goes beyond either both sonically and in the songs. It was written at a time of considerable change for songwriter Elizabeth Morris, a time during which she fell in love, moved to Italy and got married. The truism is that third albums are difficult beasts, but by remaining true to themselves Allo Darlin’ have side-stepped the pitfalls to produce a wonderful record - thoughtful and exciting and exquisitely played – that will please their existing army of fans and newcomers alike.

Today we’re sharing another soaring single from Quinie’s new album ‘Forefowk, Mind Me’ (out May 23rd). ‘Col My Love’ is the very first track on the album, and it’s a powerful song to sing, accompanied by some epic pipes too. Quinie explains that the words “warn of the dangers of being close to the shoreline. I thought it would be a good fit with this footage of me and Maisie trying to navigate one of the challenges on one of our walks. Perhaps not quite as scary as being jailed on a cliff top, but nevertheless an adventure.”
