For the third year running we are releasing a 12" compilation featuring four acts, though this year it's a bit of a curveball in terms of the line up. REI (Vessel), OLO Worms, Taos Humm and Giant Swan makes an eclectic mix. 

In what has been a year of progression and evolution for Howling Owl, it makes sense for this record to be so diverse. Featuring the first vinyl appearances of Taos Humm's melancholy-pysch and Giant Swan's claustrophobic drone, alongside a welcome return to the unpredictable world of OLO Worms and an exclusive track from one of Vessel's aliases REI; this is a special record that ebbs and flows and fills.

We like to make our records mean something, and this is a compilation that encapsulates where we are at right now in terms of music and meaning.

Earth Ball - 'A Need To Cool Down'

Green shoots have burst forth from Parsnip! The Australian group have a super-catchy single out today called ‘Turn to Love’, taken from their sophisticated sophomore album ‘Behold’. Drawing comparisons with Dolly Mixture, Sara Goes Pop and Look Blue Go Purple, Parsnip are an animated ensemble, full of life, emotional complexity and humour. On ‘Behold’ they explore both the inner and outer realms of consciousness with quick wits and some seriously quality jangle and jolt.

Parsnip - 'Turn To Love'

‘Your Move’ is the first taster from Nottingham duo RATTLE’s forthcoming third album Encircle (coming Feb 28th 2025, Upset The Rhythm), and sees the duo expand their unique experiments in rhythm, metre and tension. 

‘Your Move’ is mesmeric and boundless, hypnotic in its minimalism of double-drums and the often wordless almost tribal vocals of RATTLE’s Katharine Eira Brown.  

“The images in my head for the first half of ‘Your Move’ were water - reflecting in pools, and flowing” explains Katharine. “Then the second half is like it is stuck in an endless slow-moving cycle. The bit in-between is the flitting in-between, we wanted it to feel like a CD getting stuck. The words Your Move might be about moving in an embodied way or freedom / movement / expression, but they are also an emboldening call to action - it's your turn - what are YOU going to do, what's your next move? "


Your Move

Today we’re sharing another soaring single from Quinie’s new album ‘Forefowk, Mind Me’ (out May 23rd). ‘Col My Love’ is the very first track on the album, and it’s a powerful song to sing, accompanied by some epic pipes too. Quinie explains that the words “warn of the dangers of being close to the shoreline. I thought it would be a good fit with this footage of me and Maisie trying to navigate one of the challenges on one of our walks. Perhaps not quite as scary as being jailed on a cliff top, but nevertheless an adventure.”

Quinie - 'Col My Love'

For this release, that coincidentally came out on  Record Store Day 2016, I spent about 3 months downloading as many of the thousands of songs released on Record Store Day 2015. I think I managed to find about 85% of them and it almost killed me. I may as well have stabbed myself in the ears and eyes with a spike of frozen shit.

I then made 'slabs' of noise by layering about 100 songs at a time on top of each other on Garage Band, creating 100 or so of these 4-5 minute slabs of dirge before sending them to Harry Wright (Naturals/Giant Swan) to try and make a song out of them all. 

Predictably, he came back with something really excellent, and then I probably went and ruined it by using the Cut Up Technique, going through all of the names of the releases and cutting words at random, forming them into some kind of gibberish that I whispered over the track.

Whoever bought the 7" also received our full back catalogue.

Thought I'd put it up today as it is the final day of our 5th Birthday Week, and seems like a good time to let people know just how stupid we (well, me) really are.
