Berlin techno punks Data Animal go stark raving mad on their new single “Human Resource.”

There’s gold out there in them hills and on “Human Resource,” Data Animal stake a claim in this lawless austerity-stricken frontier armed to the teeth with serrated drum machine beats sharper than a bullwhip’s crack cut with acidic fuzzed-out power chords more electrifying than a tongue across the terminals of a 9v battery. It’s Data Animal’s world—we’re just trying to survive in it.

“Big Two-Hearted River” is the new EP by P.J.M. Bond. The EP contains the title track, based on the legendary short story by Ernest Hemingway, orchestrated with melancholy guitars and Hammond organs, blues harp and upbeat percussion, which echo the world created by Hemingway.

The second track, "Indian Camp," is one of the most famous stories by the American author. Twelve-year old Nick Adams, the protagonist for many of the stories from "In Our Time," learns about life and death when his father - a country doctor - is called upon to perform an emergency caesarian section on an Indian (or Native American) woman with nothing but a jack-knife. The track is centred around flute, acoustic guitars, bass and percussion.

The third song is Mr. and Mrs. Elliot, a song with nothing but piano, strings, and vocals, which calls to mind Randy Newman's ballad-style songs. The song takes its cue from the 1925 story, which deals with a couple trying to get a baby, but who fail to succeed despite their many efforts.

For this unprecedented and unique project, Bond put to music all 17 stories from Hemingway’s short-story collection “In Our Time” (1925). The marriage between literature and music is most potent in the new single, "Big Two-Hearted River: Part II," which seeks to translate the medium of literature to the art of music. Both story and song explore the meditational solitude the human soul finds in nature, and for the song Bond craftily applied the sounds of acoustic guitars and keys to echo the mood of Hemingway’s prose.

“Big Two-Hearted River” is often considered to be the quintessential Hemingway masterpiece, the American author at the height of his powers. In the two-part story, Nick Adams leaves the chaos of society behind him and travels into the woods for some much needed rest. Nature is the great equalizer in these stories, and Nick regains a bit of control over his life by imposing a structure on his activities in the Michigan forests: fishing, building a tent, baking flapjacks on a smoking skillet, making an onion sandwich. The story still endures a century later due to Hemingway’s acute observation of the human soul and his intense and honest descriptions of the landscape.

The Umbrellas debut album was one of the surprise hits of an otherwise grim 2021. Channeling sold gold influences like The Pastels, Comet Gain, Orange Juice and The Aislers Set, The Umbrellas represent the fertile San Francisco Bay Area scene at its most pop-tastic. Following on from 3 sell-out pressings of their debut album and tours with everyone from labelmates Papercuts to Fucked Up, the band is now back with an absolute blinder of a sophomore album, a future greatest hits compilation bursting with brilliant pop moments.

"Fairweather Friend" is bigger in almost every way than their self-titled debut, featuring sterling songwriting and arranging, bigger and more nuanced production, and terrifically assured vocals all around. The Umbrellas leap forward with "Fairweather Friend" is reminiscent of similar growth that we saw with second albums from Veronica Falls, Allo Darlin’ and The Pains of Being Pure At Heart; while the concept remains consistent, the execution is bigger, bolder and ultimately even more satisfying. It's always thrilling to see a young band swing for the fences and succeed, and we're looking forward to hearing where The Umbrellas go next and watching "Fairweather Friend" enter the indiepop canon.

FLVN brings an array of darkened synth sounds and heavy rhythms to his chugging new ‘Sensaciones Platonicas’ EP on bORDEL Records.

Frenchmen Flavien Gaubert aka FLVN grew up on a mix of Bowie and Radiohead, the noise of Sonic Youth and the bold bass of Soviet Soviet, and all that comes out in his own music. It's a new and raw take on techno-disco that is psychedelic and full of surprises on labels like Night Noise and Playground. Now he steps up to bORDEL Records with two guest vocalists.

The first is Blaues Einhorn aka Charlie Lumberjack on the track 'Freaks,' a stiff, jarring drum machine rhythm with plenty of post-punk angst and crashing hits. The deadpan vocal adds menace while the fat bass stomps on and industrial sounds in the distance up the tension. It's a brilliantly austere cut. Argentina-born singer and producer Abby Knives then brings occult charm and libidinous overtones to 'Sensaciones Platonicas'. This one has another stark and mechanical groove with booming bass and cold wave synth chords. It's a seriously heavyweight track with a twisted late-night energy that is finished to perfection by the seductively whispered vocals.

This is a haunting yet alluring new offering from the dark synth wizard that is FLVN.

Beige Banquet are a London-based five-piece playing a bleak yet high-powered style of dark punk. Underpinned by a propulsive and motorik rhythm section, they combine robotic and percussive vocal deliveries with industrial textures and abrasive guitars to create frantic and driving sound. The band are set to release their sophomore album 'Ornamental Hermit', and first as a full band, on the 13th March 2024.

Produced by Beige Banquet with the help of engineer Matt Green (Sniffany & The Nits, Artefact, Joanna Gruesome) at Head Cold Studios and mixed and mastered by David Forcier (Civic) ‘Animals’ captures the band in a professional studio environment, moving away from the lofi bedroom recordings of previous releases, the studio provided a perfect environment for the band to develop compositionally and explore a more textural approach.

Combining layers of noise and bursts of saturated percussion, with a driving rhythm section, ‘Animals’ is a taste of the richer and more dynamic sound of their future releases, and captures the raw power of the Beige Banquet live show for the first time.
