Drumsound & Bassline Smith – Phantasm - TECH 100 Part 2

Before the reverberations of TECH 100's onslaught have even faded away, though, Drumsound and Bassline Smith are back with Part 2.



First up is “Phantasm”, infused with echoes of hardcore from the intro. Growling bass and haymaker drums maintain the assault and, even when the track breaks down, high-tension stabs punch back in giving no time to let up. This bullies ravers into moving and accepts no refusal.



Then the mood apparently lightens with “Make Some Noise”. A warm sunrise intro draws you in, but then the calm is shattered. The eponymous vocal sample is the alarm signal before a driving mid-line and drums build to a tumultuous drop. When the rave needs adrenaline to the heart, here's one to draw for.



Now that the energy level's appropriately red-lining, Drumsound and Bassline Smith keep it there with the VIP edit of “Can U Feel It”. The original has already earned its stripes in the parties of the world, and this mix twists it into the shape of an unstoppable steamroller. Bouncy percussion and syncopated bass plus the salute-to-the-old-skool sample selection make this a cut for the true heads.



Finally, we roll into “Violator”. This is call-to-action music. The intro hints at film-score elements, setting the scene for something dramatic. That drama is delivered with a monster drop. Drums, bass, swirling atmospherics and a spy-movie riff keep the plot  building into an unmissable epic.



It's still only early in 2014, but Drumsound and Bassline Smith have already set the tone. Joining the dots between the past and future of drum and bass music, double-strike of TECH 100 sets the standard for the next century of Technique Recordings releases. So don't blink, you'll want to be watching.

Currently celebrating one hundred releases with a set of EPs from label bosses Drumsound and Bassline Smith themselves, Technique Recordings has established itself as one of the finest labels in the drum and bass scene over the past decade. Scene legends like Roni Size, J Magik & Wickaman, Friction, DJ SS, Twisted Individual, Crissy Criss, Tantrum Desire, ShockOne and
Youngman have all graced this imprint, and you’ll consistently find the Technique name at the top of genre charts and smashing clubs worldwide. It’s no surprise that this label has assembled a sufficiently heavyweight back catalogue to fill a forty-three track LP with remastered classics and exclusive VIP selections.
Time for a Retrospective.
This album takes you in every direction, covering all wavelengths of the drum and bass spectrum. Drumsound and Bassline Smith, along with their alter-ego 2DB, provide an extensive selection of the tracklisting, backed up by their label’s current international soldiers and a selection of those heavy-hitters who’ve graced the imprint over the years.
So, in the midst of the bombardment from the label bosses, Tantrum Desire pop up with their big-room killers, Crissy Criss & Youngman drop in to grime things up a touch, and Dub Foundation flip things into half-step style. And, to show this is a truly worldwide movement, there are contributions from Ukraine’s MaxNRG, Slovakia’s L Plus, and a couple of combos hailing from down under, Skyver & D Jon and Spectrem & Spillage.
All this and choice cuts from Roni Size, DJ SS, Twisted Individual, Digital, J Majik & Wickaman, plus an appearance from TeeBee on remix duties. No wonder the Technique brand continues to raise its status.
Over the years, and their hundred releases, Drumsound and Bassline Smith’s Technique Recordings have proven themselves to be a monumental institution in the drum and bass scene. AMIGA MAN / HAPPY DAYS - 2DB

2DB have been honing their free-wheeling, rough-edged brand of
dancefloor drum and bass throughout the noughties, and now they've
cemented their position among the elite with a string of releases on
Technique Recordings.

There's always been a nostalgic, old skool influence in their
productions, and, as if to prove that point, the two tracks on this
release are all about taking us back to the roots. Of course, though,
2DB always have to add their own personal stamp to keep the sound fresh.

The first track goes by the name of "Amiga Man", a reference which is
so old skool that it's almost a history lesson. As you'd expect, 2DB
have taken the bleeps and chirps of the eponymous computer and twisted
them into layers of pulsating drum and bass synthesis. With driving
riffs that mirror the ubiquitous dubstep wobble without falling into
cliché, this is guaranteed to hit hard in any dance.

On the AA side we have "Happy Days", a tune calculated to get
everyone's backs off the wall. 2DB construct subtle layers of
percussion and a floating, euphoric chord progression that keeps the
momentum building throughout the track with no let up. Coupled with a
high-energy vocal sample,and house-influenced synth-piano textures,
this one is a scientifically designed floor-filler.

So, with "Amiga Man" and "Happy Days", 2DB have created vital pieces
of weaponry for DJs to draw for. These tunes will be making ravers
skank out for a long time to come.
