Do I Need A Great Radio Voice?

The internet is such a huge place and there's a lot of competition out there. So how will people find your podcast? Here's five ways to spread the word about your podcast:

iTunes. Apple's podcast store is the biggest hub for podcasts and getting your podcast listed here has become a necessity for podcasts.


Social Networks. Facebook/Twitter/LinkedIn are amazing tools for promoting anything. The important thing is to know how and when to use them.


Traditional marketing. Podcasting is definitely in the realm of "new media", but it can still work with, and be complemented by old ways of advertising. If you want to convert your traditional audience to a new format then reach out to them wherever they are.

How Do We Promote A Podcast?

Microphone technique is one of the most crucial elements of recording a great podcast. You won’t know the difference if you get it right, but you’ll certainly hear it if you get it wrong. Here’s some pointers to help you get good mic technique.

    Get the right distance from the microphone. There’s an optimal distance for talking in to a microphone, too close and you can distort your voice, too far and you will introduce too much room noise. To get the right distance, try measuring a handspan between the microphone and your mouth.

    Find the front of the microphone. Not all microphones are the same. Some pick up from all angles and others are directional. Some are ‘front address’ and some are ‘side address’. Get to know the microphone you’re working with and make sure you’re always talking directly in to the front of the microphone.
    Find your “performance" level. Most people will find that they test the microphone quietly and then when the red light goes on they suddenly get louder. Dynamics can be a good thing, but find a volume level in your speech that feels comfortable for you and practice and prepare according to that level.

These next two tips are for the more advanced podcaster. They’re good practices, but make sure you’re comfortable with the whole package before you try these.

    "Chase the flame". The hand span is a good average mic-to-mouth distance, but the volume of your voice can change this. Try leaning in or pulling back with the dynamics of your voice. Move away if you’re shouting and move closer if you’re whispering. Don’t worry if this is too advanced at first, this is easily fixed in mixing.

    Watch out for sibilance and popping Ps. If for some reason you’re not using a windshield or a pop filter, then you’ll have to watch out for certain syllables. Ps can create a popping sound and overload a microphone. Try turning slightly if you have any hard Ps. Sibilance is the high-end sound that your hear when you say S or similar sounds. If you have an S-heavy sentence then try moving back from the mic slightly and make sure to pace your speech.

Well, you don't, but why would you exclude any portion of your audience? There's no need to rush. It's good to have a level of energy in your voice, but we can edit out any pauses or mistakes.


Practice. If we can, we usually record the entire podcast twice (especially for episode one). This takes the pressure off and helps you get comfortable with recording.


Start again. If you stumble over a word, don't worry, just go back to the start of the sentence. We can cut pauses, but it's harder to fix intonation.


Take a break. If you need to stop to gather your thoughts then do so. Better to be clear and consise than to ramble until you find the right words.


Don't worry about perfection. Podcasting is an episodic format. This is not your ultimate opus, so don't worry if it's not perfect, just make the next episode better.

Don't stress if there's any mistakes, editing can fix a myriad of problems and there's always a chance to have another go.

In a perfect world we'd record in a professional studio with racks of equipment, miles of cables and the record producer telling us stories of when he worked with Iron Maiden, but modern technology is such that we don't need this any more. The Ursa Minor Audio studio is capable of recording any kind of podcast and is small enough to be carried in a single case. So we can record you in any space. Here are some factors to consider when choosing an appropriate recording location:

Size of the room. Most spaces will be suitable, the smaller the room, the better. A big space can create a lot of reverberation which may become audible in the podcast.


Surrounding environment. If you want to record in your office, but you're next door to a construction site then it might be worth considering another location. As a general rule it's best if the background noise is as low as possible.


Comfort. Reducing environment noise in the final podcast is important, but it's no good if we end up recording in a cupboard. We need to find a room that makes it easy to talk into a microphone.


No distractions. So we've got a comfortable, quiet room and we're ready to roll when suddenly the receptionist bursts in looking for a file. A podcast is best when everyone is focussed and so take this into account when choosing the makeshift studio.

    LibSyn. Short for Liberated Syndication, LibSyn is a dedicated podcast hosting service and the preferred choice of Ursa Minor Audio. LibSyn provides reliable service and fantastic download statistics. LibSyn is not without it's faults, but it provides great valuable for small scale podcasting.

    BluBrry. A similar service to LibSyn, this hosting is configured to integrate with WordPress, which makes it a great option if your website is built in WordPress, but this is not the only way BluBrry can be used. BluBrry is great for podcasters hoping for a large audience. They have distribution and advertising (i.e. income) options available for podcasters with large download numbers.

    Amazon Web Services. A highly reliable and incredibly scalable platform. There's a good chance you're using their services online without even knowing it. Hosting your podcast with Amazon will not trouble their bandwidth, but they have a slightly different pricing platform to LibSyn and BluBrry. Amazon is by far the biggest provider in this list, but others are designed for podcasting, while Amazon is more generic.

    Your website. The least preferred location. Ultimately the content will be advertised on your website, but that doesn't mean we have to host it there. Given the size of the media and the (hopefully large) amount of downloads you will receive, it's better to let a third party handle the media downloads so it doesn't affect your bandwidth.

    A thousand more. There's a multitude of podcast hosting solutions, all with various pros and cons. Many charge and many others are free. If you find one that best suits your needs then use it, but be aware that quality often comes at a price.

There's a huge variety of places to host your media for fast and easy access. Dedicated podcast hosting allows your media to be stored by a third party and to be distributed and advertised on your website. Some quick research will help you find the hosting solution that works best for you.
