JASHOOK - Tou Ya Ho (NEGENTROPY Remix) - FREE DOWNLOAD

What you're about to hear is our homage to one of the most underappreciated hymns of the portuguese Rave scene in the early-to-mid 90's, often dismissed as being too "cheesy" for our current standards in the underground House and Techno scenes - now overly identified with narrow-minded, mostly romanticized notions of what the Detroit, Chicago and NYC traditions were, constantly re-interpreted and refined on a global level.

Jashook's "Tou Ya Ho" was produced by Nelson Horta and Rui Remix at the studios of Radio Energia, an important radio station in the early years of portuguese dance music - even holding a regular mix-show by DJ Vibe at one time - and was released on a subsidiary of the legendary Kaos Records: Fuga Records. This sub-label had a more commercial agenda, releasing some of the 1st and biggest hits of portuguese pop-oriented dance music, such as Os Lunáticos "Estou Na Lua" or Bamboo Beat's "Amanhã" and, by doing so, played a huge role in bringing that lexicon and sound-palette to a much a wider audience in the country.

Ursa's Reef is a late 80's traveller and surfer wandering endlessly in the secluded raves of Goa, searching for his own soul while dancing in abandon to the proto-Trance journeys of Goa Gil. Brought up in Sintra, Portugal, by a family of uptight catholic hypocrites, UR goes rogue in his early 20's, seduced by the esoteric teachings of Levi, Pessoa, Crowley and Israel Regardie while keeping an unhealthy obsession with Roxy Music. He is also a fictional, made up persona - a musical heteronym - of Lisbon-based DJ and producer Marco Rodrigues, mostly known for his work under the name Photonz. Together with his friend José Acid - a musical heteronym of João Ervedosa AKA Shcuro - he makes one last trip to Goa that could prove fatal.

Ah, the distinctive art of the alias. The mystery figure who prefers to be known as an alter ego, a removal from their otherwise known state. In this case we are delighted to introduce to you Ursa's Reef, the alter ego of an artist perhaps better known as Photonz. The new project sees him focus on elements more commonly associated with trance than his previous works on the likes of Principe, Creme Organization, Hot Haus and DBA.

His latest EP under the new moniker is forthcoming on One Eyed Jacks, his own imprint which had previously been an outlet for early Photonz material back in 2010. 

We are delighted to be able to welcome him to contribute to our ever growing mix series.

Fernando Silva released his 1st record last year on One Eyed Jacks as http://soundcloud.com/palplus after being a relatively unnoticed artist in Portugal for the good part of a decade, starting out by experimenting with his Groovebox in the late 90's and forming other aliases and projects like Beatnik or O Plano.

The title track on his debut "The Forest" got him and the label the attention of a number of artists, DJ's and music fans that had never heard of the label or Pal+ at that point, and eventually the record entered SPIN's 20 Best Electronic Records of 2012 list, becoming a very important release for One Eyed Jacks. It was also the first release on the label that wasn't produced by or a collaboration with us Photonz, a fact that made it symbolic of the changes happening around OEJ, gradually shifting from an imprint for our own music to being a crew and a musical home to other like-minded artists. It was the first time we've invested in someone else's music, someone without any hype or releases to his name, and it felt good!

By the end of 2012 our musical crew had expanded significantly, making possible something like the compilation "Dead Cities". Inspired by the serendipity of discovering new artists or new connections we thought we should use "The Forest" as a starting point again and celebrate it with remixes by some of the expanding OEJ crew and a few other artists we love and feel close to us.

Jokers of The Scene, Alis, Violet, Sabre, IVVVO or WORKER/PARASITE turned a simple collection of remixes into something else entirely, something closer to an album. A satisfying continuous listen based solely on their ability to transform the same source material into a fully individualized result, beautifuly shaped by their singular artistic vision. 

For the artwork we stuck with our fav visual artist from Lisbon, Márcio Matos. He's been with us since the beginning and just keeps getting better at this.
