Ursula 1000’s fascination with Japan didn’t just stop with his love of Shibuya-kei and its massive influence on his sound DNA. City Pop, that sub-genre of Japanese music from the late 70s and into the 80s that blended synth pop, soft rock, boogie and jazz funk is something Ursula truly digs but never explored in his productions…until now. Japan’s Yuuko Sings, who Ursula discovered doing vocals for English art rock group Django Django, seemed like the perfect fit for this collaboration. She’s sang on tracks for anime soundtracks and J pop plus, she has a killer rap style to boot! Life Is So Beautiful is what emerged from this meeting of minds. Wrapped up in a bundle of bossa nova chords, tropical daytime nu disco beats and that timeless City Pop sheen, Ursula and Yuuko have concocted the perfect summer cocktail. All this song needs are a pineapple wedge and a parasol!

For his first single of 2025, New York’s Ursula 1000 kicks it into gear with some 60’s French yé- yé meets chunky funky breaks, growling organ and big brass action on a little number called “Quoi De Neuf” (meaning “what’s up?”) featuring Parisian vocalist François Club. François’ 2 albums, Cobra and Nickel Chrome, were some of Ursula’s fave French Pop grooves from the past couple of years. Inspiration for this song came via verlan, a French style of street slang where syllables are transposed, almost flipped, to create a new word. For example, “femme” (woman) is changed to “meuf” and “fou” which means crazy is now “ouf”. As a digger of pop culture oddities, Ursula found this language tweak fascinating and perfect for a lyrical concept. “Quoi De Neuf” is taken from Ursula’s upcoming album DECADANSE, coming out in 2025!

Who likes smoke machines? Everyone likes smoke machines! New York's Ursula 1000 teams up with MC bcap to deliver an ode to this glorious device. Wait, are we talking about dry ice? Yeah… sure! Ursula 1000 is a longtime Fort Knox Five collaborator, both in the studio and in the DJ booth. After releasing six albums and taking his eclectic dance sound around the globe, we are proud to feature Ursula 1000’s first single on Fort Knox Recordings.

Smoke Machine features vocalist bcap whose lyrics and soul are fused with a futuristic electro groove. Ursula 1000’s original mix is a quirky, synth-laden house stomper that takes you on a sleazy, sinister beat trip where bcap spits out the lyrical while keeping it mystical. Label bosses Fort Knox Five do what they do best and funk this sucker up. The result is a breaky, g-house vibe complete with pitched up and down vocals and trap fills. Qdup delivers a bombastic modern flip on old school breaks using electro toms, lasers and 808 booms. Completing the single is Whiskey Pickle's RiCHARD.GEAR who tweaks Smoke Machine into a techy, dark-house Dirtybird monster.
